advice on puppy treats Any recommendations for healthy training treats for young puppies? My yorkie is 8 weeks old and is teathing, and she has trouble with biscuits because she doesn't have many teeth. I am trying to train her to sleep in a crate at night and I am looking for something really yummy to use as a reward. |
I always have used the Gerber baby food chicken and meat weinnies, but I was looking at the ingredients the other day and it has onion and garlic in it and I have since read no onions for dogs. I have raised many Yorkies on them and have never had a health problem. I cut them up and use them as training bites. |
My vet recommended using a tiny puppy food...the dog doesn't take long to eat them (which is helpful in training). Find one that your pup loves and pick up a couple of sample bags to try. (my pet supply store owner gives them to us for free) We always used puppy food for our other terrier when training her...they worked wonderful and the size was perfect. You don't want to be giving them something too large when working with them. |

My vet recommended Butler Lean Treats, they are soft and you can break them into smaller pieces. Porter is 12 weeks old but we got him at 9 weeks and he loves them. |

I used little tiny peanut butter puppy treat from the pet store, Kloey also liked small beef bites from the pet store. |
I use pupcorn and small pieces of ham and cheese. |
Cheerios |
When we had Ellie at Puppy Kindergarten, the trainer told us to use something soft and if the treat is to big to break it into small pieces. She said when you are training, like to sit, stay, etc., you need a treat that they can eat really fast so that you can repeat the command again quickly. I use Puperoni To Go. As a treat for going potty on the paper I use Charlee Bear. Ellie seems to really like them. |
cheerios it is |
My babies love kix and cheerios!! |
I use cheerios for Kizzy, but. Last Friday she got 2 shots and he gave her a little dose of medicine for coccilia even tho it showed up negative, just to make sure he said. On Saturday, she seemed to feel ok but I kept trying to teach her a new thing and I gave her a good many cheerios, maybe like a dozen or so. then she got diahrear, but just that one night. the next day she was fine but I was worried it might have been the cheerios since she did have a good many. But it could of been from one of the things the vet gave her, I dont have a clue. So lately i've only given her 3 or 4 cheerios a day. What does everone else think? I hate to not give them to her because she loves them so much she will just come to me and drop on the floor and roll over several times to impress me hoping for a cheerio. makes me feel bad not to give her one. But I also had some hip chips and she eats them good but not like she does the cheerios. Anyone ever had a puppy get diahrear from cheerios, if you give them several in a day? |
Jack loves Puperoni's. He won't touch a hard treat. He keeps getting them at the drive up window at the credit union, but turns his nose up at them! But I love the Cheerios idea. And Kix. Used to be my favorite cereal growing up! Thanks for the suggestions. :aimeeyork |

I also thought it might be from cutting teeth. I know my babies had it sometimes when they cut teeth. |
I use Pet Botanics® Mini Training Rewards for Dogs. They are small and my yorkie puppy loves them. I pee pad trained her within 10 days when she was 8 weeks old. We are working on housetraining her now that I found a harness that fit her. She has also learned to retrieve her little tennis ball. In fact, before I even throw the ball, I can tell her to get her ball and she looks for it and brings it to me. She will retrieve ball and brings it to me, even if I walked into another room and keeps it in her mouth until I reach for the treats. lol so cute. She loves these treats.:):animal36:animal-pa:animal-pa:animal-pa |
