Question ... Think I know the answer though Here is a clip from an email I got today. I have been searching for a Yorkie for my family...but do not want to ship unless I fly with it. It seems like a tough start for a little baby... So I have started my search pretty locally... I heard about a lady...I thought she was a hobby breeder.. but here is a snippet from her email.. "I also want to let you know that we are not breeders--we get puppies from quite a few breeders, and most of the puppies go to out of state homes in large metropolitan areas where finding quality puppies can be quite difficult" That sound like one of the red flags for puppy mills or brokers, right? I'm so disheartened...She was the closest I contacted.. Ah well... The search continues Brenda |
Have you tried the www.ytca.org site for clubs/breeders close to you? or the site www.breeders.net has a zipcode search which may help. best of luck. |
scam!!!! don't go with this breeder. look in a local newspaper classfield. or rescue centers or something. wait for the right puppy, don't just go for any. i've been looking for a while, and now i found a great breeder, my cousin! lol, just 4 more months! |
Something does not sound right..... If in doubt stay away. |
I would bet my bottom dollar she is a puppy broker. I would stay far far away. Sylvan listed your best options. Good Luck!! |
I went to YTCA and the only OK listing was a dead email addy... Will try the phone number tomorrow. Thank you for the tip.. Brenda |
Now I'm on the breeders.net and I'm seeing things like..."If I don't have the puppy you want, I can get it." Doesnt that sound like a broker? I will get there eventually, wont I? And have the perfect dog...who chews on my stuff...and then pees on the good stuff... Right? : ) ---- Keeping my sense of humor Bren |
Yeah i would steer clear!! Sounds like brokers to me! |
I have never been on Breeders.net so I went and looked. In my area , there were 16 breeders listed.Only one that I know of and would buy a puppy from, I did look at the other ads that had websites and/or pics. You just need to be careful when screening their ads I think. Can you maybe travel to a neighboring state? I know of an excellent breeder in Texas, where friends have bought puppies. She did ship them and they both arrived in fine shape. And they were further than you are. |

My vet declined to refer. He is awesome..but he is pro- rescue what's already there..Which I did twice...now I'm wanting more...I can tell you he has awards all over his office from the president,etc...and he is super nice to our pets but is not inclined to help "spread" the animal population......Which I agree or I wouldn't have the pets I have, but I grew up with champion blood line show dogs....Not mutts and I'm ready for a "Baby"... Brenda |
YEP, Now looking at good ole' Texas Breeders....Oh heavens....I hope they are not die hard Texas fans...They may not sell to an Okie... Public announcement for the sake of my future pooch... I did not grow up here....I like it here...but will not fight over an OU/Texas Game. Still trying to keep my sense of humor Brenda |
Ok, so here I go again with the stupid questions. Puppy mills? Are they as bad as they sound. Forced breeding to get more pups? Am I on the right track here? I had no idea that Yorkies were such big business. :( |

puppymills are horrible places where there is no reguard to the dog's lives at all. They are stuck in a cage where their main purpose in life is to breed. There can be up to hundreds of dogs living in small wire cages, they aren't given much medical attention, they are poorly groomed, and they poop/pee where they sleep. It's horrible. It sounds like that person IS a broker. STAY AWAY! Brokers usually partner up with puppymillers so that the work of advertising and selling for top dollar is done by another person #2 so that the location and the illegal acts of the puppymill can be withheld. Find a local breeder that you can visit with and talk to about their breeding program. Make sure you know what to look for. I remember when I first started I had ran across a broker in Missouri, the puppymill capital of the world. A good breeder does all of the right tests on the puppies and puts their heart and soul into breeding. They only choose the dogs that meet the standard and have waiting lists so they don't need to advertise often. I wanted to add that a good breeder would want to screen the potential parents THEMSELVES. They would want to be positive that their beloved puppies were going to wonderful homes. They wouldn't depend on some lady they were paying to do that. Only people who breed LOTS of dogs(puppymillers) can afford to pay a broker. I don't know one person on YT that uses a broker. |
I gather the mommas and poppas spend their whole little lives in cages....They breed... That is it... I saw a site that showed a momma dog infested with just about everything, rotted teeth, malnurished....alll cause she was just a breeder doggie...over and over and over.. And yeah, I've been looking at every legit dog imaginable and have seen them for $1000-$3000. I've seen lower and higher prices...but this seems about average. Keep making the puppies and selling them to people who are either ignorant about puppy mills or don't care. That's what they do.. I will not participate and be part of the "demand" that helps it continue. Bren |

I had no idea that there were such unscrupulous people around. I got my puppy from a famer who's house pets had had pups. The parents were both lovely looking, and the farmers wife apparently spioled them more than her husband! LOL He also had a Rotweiler who was soppy as heck. It took 2 years to find a yorkie here. The pups were all 4 months and there were just 3 there to choose from. They had about 50 meters to play in their pen and had lots of chewy toys and a ball or two to play with. They all seemed happy and in good health. They are not held to any standards here as there are no dog shows, and no qualified breeders. I'm happy that the puppy mill hasn't extended to Tunisia, I hope to god it never does. I consider myself VERY fortunate that we found a pup at all, and even more fortunate that she is a healthy and a happy little cutey thing :D |
Sounds like a puppy broker to me. I would put that person on my "blocked senders list" and stay away from her. There are lots of GREAT breeders, both show type and small home breeders who can supply you with a healthy happy puppy. Usually there is a lot of hard work finding the perfect furchild, but after all, this is an addition to your family who will be with you for many years to come. But one you find the right baby, then let the fun begin. GOOD LUCK IN YOUR SEARCH!!! Try to find a local breeder and GO to the breeder, look at the facilities and ALL of their dogs. Educate yourself on the breed and ask hard questions and expect honest answers. Is the darling in your avatat a Boxer? |
I don't live in Oklahoma, but I live 2 miles across the OK border in Kansas. The breeder I got my Jasmine from lives here and just the other day I saw a sign in front of a house that said Yorkie pups for sale. Someone said it was a lady who had a male & female and bred them. I have no idea what they look like. The breeder I got Jasmine from has a little Champion male she breeds. He is Jasmine's father. Also I don't know how close you are to Tulsa, but the Tulsa paper always has Yorkies. Just go to Tulsaworld.com You can PM me. |
I checked in the classified ads for dogs in the Tulsa World and there are lots and lots of Yorkies. Starting as low as 300. and $500. on up. There was a lot of different area codes and prefixes on the different ads so some may even be near you. I even saw the ad for the one that was about 3 miles from me. Lana |
