| Healthy Paws Insurance Rate Jumps Well had Healthy Paws 90% plan since Ginger was a puppy, one claim which paid about $75 a few years back. Ginger just turned 6 this month and is in fine health. Received an email that rate was going up from $62.41 to $84.87, which I feel is ridicules and the "Straw that broke the Camels back"! So called them for explanation as this has Jumped more in 6 years then a previous company did for our last Pup over a 14 year period. First got a run around on questions, then decided to look at lowering % coverage or raising Deductible. Well that evening received email with 3 different brackets of different Percentage reductions, different Deductible increases and Combo Percentage reduction, Deductible increases. 90%/$100 @ $84.87 Uncapped Premium $107.14 ~~~~~~~ 80%/$100 @ $97.30 ~~~~~~~ 70%/$100 @ $87.46 ~~~~~~~ 90%/$250 @ $91.73 ~~~~~~~ 80%/$250 @ $83.43 ~~~~~~~ 70%/$250 @ $75.14 ~~~~~~~ 90%/$500 @ $77.51 ~~~~~~~ 80%/$500 @ $70.63 ~~~~~~~ 70%/$500 @ $63.75 Called again and asked to speak to a Manager to explain this, after several minutes on Hold an Individual ID'd themselves as an "Acct Manager", fancy name for another CSR. I explained that I clearly asked to speak to a Manager that had the Authority to fix my Problem or tell that was the way it is! I the received a call From a Manger and found that it was a "Cap Agreement" with AZ Insurance Dept. Then called our Vet who said they take them all but look at TruPanion. Sure enough they had great prices even though we were coming in with a 6 yo Yorkie. Decided on the 90% with $700 Deductible at $42.07 Sorry about long Post but might help some one save a bunch of money |

| Most vets take payment directly from Trupanion and the client only pays the deductible. Other companies reimburse you after you submit your claim with documentation. |

| Yes our Vet does. We took the $42.47 option because we save $20 per month and when you multiply the New Healthy Paws Premium it would have been $1018.44 in a year anyway. We are really glad HP raised their rates that much, good riddance! Its like "Cutting the Cord", between Dish, Hughes and the Phone Company we've saved a bunch, in the Thousands over 2+ years already. Now we pay $69.99 Comcast Internet, $13.00 Hulu and about $4,89 Fed Tax for the Ooma Phone (and wired in House system so have 5 phones). Before it was about $400 a month and growing. Funny all the tricks they use to get more money, separating the Taxes, inching up the rates. In my younger days worked in Cable TV, we had what we called the "Chumps" number. It was a number the NCTVA published regularly, it was a number you could raise your Rates to where your loss from Disconnects equaled your increased revenue from the higher rate. | This was their 3rd year raising it on me so I canceled and went to PetsBest. These companies at the end of the day are out to make money not help you.

| I have Healthy Paws and I understand your concern. I bought it 5 years ago at around $42.00 now I pay $69.97 a month. I will say though once you put in a claim and go to another insurance company it is considered pre-existing issue. I am stuck with Healthy Paws for Thumper. They have their positives and negatives in my opinion. I will say they are very easy to get reimbursed. Because of Thumper's health issues I get my money back each year no matter how much they raise me. I will say I pay the same amount for Bella and she is completely healthy and younger with Nationwide. I was told by the time she is Thumper's age I can be paying over $2k a year in insurance. I will say Nationwide covers more than Healthy Paws so that is why I like them. Some thoughts I have as to why we are all seeing rate spikes is that 5 years ago not as many people were getting Pet Insurance. Now more pet owners are getting it. So the more claims they pay out the more they charge in premiums over all. I get it. Its a business and they need to make money. I don't always think it is right but see the other side of the situation. I have done extensive research on Pet insurance and find it worse than human insurance. I have to be my pet's advocate and fight sometimes to get reimbursed sometimes. Also be aware with Healthy Paws deductible it is calculated different than other insurances. For instance if you have a $250 deductible a year your more likely paying $275 a year because they first deduct the 90% off the bill than apply the difference to the deduction. Whereas Nationwide if the bill is $100 and you have a $250 deductible its straightforward.

I am glad everything worked out for you. We all have to figure out what is right for us each. There is no right or wrong answer in my opinion. This post actually reminded me I need to follow up with them as they thought Thumper's fecal test was preventive. I am in appeal as he has pancrititis and they did the test to rule out parasites so I am waiting on the answer after they got the medical records. Usually they are good about looking at the invoice only but this time was not the case.

| Hope things work out for you and Pup. One thing I found out was HP changed Underwriter and that's when jumps started. We only had one claim a few years back. We started giving Ginger a Joint Builder treat and it got her stools loose, Loose stools cause Impacted Glands so Vet had to drain, was Hospital Stay and Meds, HP paid $75. We went back to the way I have fed my Pups all my long life, Good Dry Kibble one or two Milk Bones and now after Breakfast and Supper Dental Treat. We beak down her Fit & Fabulous Weight Control into 3 portions, Breakfast, Supper and Treat. Yes, She gets a kibble when she does each Job, she's my Hearing Service Pup, High Pitched Hearing, timers and such, sound directions, cooking, baking, lost items. Its amazing how she looks for work, do something more the a few times and she will find a way to help. Mailman or Trash Truck coming she will let me know. Bacon or Meat needs turning again. Best one is Timer, I can't hear it so when Liz cooks she shows Ginger Timer, she will tell me and then Liz when it goes off. Well after a few times, especially Pastry she will tell me before timer, found out the Items were done every time, "Pay the Dog". |

OH my gosh, thank you!! It does help. We are behind in some of our mail, and I had no idea that there was this much of a jump. I was literally on the phone with them this weekend arguing about a medication they were trying to deny as a replacement for a shot that they were fine with approving every time in the past. I was thankfully able to get it approved.. and here this whole time there were more issues. Your information is indeed very helpful. | |
