Yorkie Yakker | Post neutering growth and coat changes Hello again! Newbie with more questions Toto is coming up to 24 weeks and I am taking him to the vet for a check, rabies shots for his passport (the UK does not have rabies so shot is optional unless you want to travel) and to ask the vet if I can schedule his neuter for 7 months when I will be offer for a couple of weeks around Christmas and can make sure he is not running and jumping at daycare. He is 1.8KG or 3.6 pounds and 8 inches at the shoulder (9 inches neck to base of tail), with a beautiful silky puppy coat that I expect to turn into a lovely adult coat as he was bred from show parents. Reading up on neutering and talking to my groomer (who is anti-neuter) I am wondering if anyone has seen changes in in their furbabies coats and whether anyone's babies grew taller than expected after neuter? Looking at Toto's parents he should be fully grown now in terms of height, but I expect him to gain a couple of pounds in weight. Obviously his parents were never fixed, so I'm trying to gauge whether I should expect the surgery to cause any unexpected changes because of delays in grow plate closure or hormone adjustments. I love his little pint size and think he is the most beautiful thing I have ever seen and I don't want to screw it up! |

| Anti neuter makes me cringe because it’s soooooo much better for them. Neutering should not change any of that. He is a puppy and coukd still grow some but that would not be because of neutering. Right now he also still has a puppy coat so that could very well change but not because of neutering. When you do get him neutered make sure the vet checks for any baby teeth that have not fallen out and have them pull them. You are doing the right thing by neutering him. On an added note what a cutie pie!

| I have done a lot of reading on the health benefits of neutering, as our little guys is 4 months old and I need to think about it. Haven't come across anything about changes in coat post neuter. I agree, he still has puppy coat which could change a lot as he grows up! I have had mad discussions with a few friends who believe it's "inhumane" and "against nature" to neuter pets. I, on the other hand, think that if you will not breed him it's kind of inhumane to let him be triggered by the natural instincts without having a chance to pursue it. |

| I didn't notice any coat changes in Bon Bon after his neuter. His temperament did change for the better. He had been getting more aggressive prior to the neuter. He is more loving and snuggly now. |

| No coat changes for Fabian after neutering... we waited until he was 9 months because he was so small. He's now a whopping 10 pounds and very long. His parents are both show dogs: one 5.5 pounds and the other 4.5 pounds. You just never know. Correlation is not causation: if I were to "blame" any thing for his still growing at 21 months, I'd chalk it up to possibly hormones fed to beef, which may then come through in the bully sticks. We're looking for a "no hormone" alternative. |

Yorkie Yakker | Thanks again. I saw the vet on Friday and told her I wanted to book my baby in for his neuter at 29 weeks. She hada few things to say. - It can be done then safely, but in the UK they usually reccommend it a bit later than the USA to let them have the testerone in their bodies for a little while longer - however, she didn’t think it would harm his health since he is a small breed I explained my issues with not being able to take off time for the aftercare until the summer if I do not do it around Christmas (I cannot send him to daycare because he gets very excited when with other dogs and will likely want to play all day before his stitches are fully healed). She reluctantly told me to go ahead and book it in, with a ‘if it were me I would wait, but if you can’t do the aftercare then its fine’ I booked him in for 22nd December and immediately got a frightened sinking feeling in my stomach about him really having surgery!! |
