Our breeder didn't let us know which puppy we'd be taking home until we got there, as the other boy was going to be a show dog and they were waiting to see which had the most "potential." We also didn't find out about the breeder until after all the puppies already had their tails docked. We keep Fabian in a puppy cut, except for his tail, which is long and swishy, like a pretend undocked tail.

AKC just seems out of date on this topic. See "Official Standard of the Yorkshire Terrier"--approved 10 July 2007. From the section "Tail"

Docked to a medium length and carried slightly higher than the level of the back

The big thing is that the AKC gets their breed standard from the breed club like for us it would be the Yorkshire Terrier Club of America so essentially the YTCA would have to change it for the AKC to change it. I just don't get why Peta and other animal rights group have not jumped on the tail docking band wagon. Not that I am a fan of Peta but they sure can make some change happen sometimes.

I didn't have any choice in the matter. I got my Freya at five months old. Her tail is either docked or partially. I'm not sure how short they do Yorkies. All I know is the nubs I've seen on pit bulls; my brother and mom had one. If I'd had a say in the matter, NO. I don't like the idea of mutilating a dog for appearance.

The issue is the US show judges. It is improving, but many are older and s9me don’t like the change the standards, and in the end the standards are what the judge must follow.

Contact YTCA if you want to voice you opinion. That is where training judges starts.
