| Potentially Buying Toy Yorkie: Concerns? Hello! Glad to be apart of this community! My wife and I am excited to be a potential new owner to a Toy Yorkie that we are most likely picking up tomorrow! However my wife and I are a bit concerned of a few things. We have no experience with Yorkies. The price is really giving us major concern. The breeder has two AKC Toy Yorkie males left and is selling them for $500. Compared to other prices as we were researching and shopping around leads us to believe this may too good to be true. We asked her to text us a picture of the AKC registration pictures and shot records and she did. They look legitimate. The dew claws are removed and the tail is docked. Below I will leave three links to the pictures she sent. I understand that even though they are AKC doesn't mean 100% there isn't any concern with issues or quality. The breeder seems to have a few other breeds and many dogs and the cheap price has us worried a bit. She is meeting us tomorrow. The puppy is 8 weeks old. My wife has concerns with the look of the dog. Not that it isn't cute or acceptable, but concerns of being mixed, ears sagging, looking scrappier than the Yorkies she has seen. Please advise to ease any worries/concerns or let us know if we should find another breeder. Here are the pics: https://ibb.co/bT4HXS https://ibb.co/cX7t6n https://ibb.co/fiNt6n Thank you for having us! We look forward to participating in this great community! |

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Hi and welcome ! The pup is adorable - but yes, the breeder should have the ears standing, for sure. If you want erect ears, you're going to face a challenge at this point. So that, of course, makes me wonder...what other standards has she skimped on, ya know?

| I’m going to be honest with you. A reputable breeder wouldn’t let puppies go at 8 weeks old because it is not best for them and they should be kept until 12 weeks with their mom. All Yorkies are part of the toy group. The price would lead me to believe there is no genetic testing or anything done. Several other breeds of dogs she breeds would be a red flag. Also a red flag would be if you were not meeting her at her place. A good place to look for reputable breeders is ytca.org

| $500 does sound too good to be true. It sounds like everything has been done online so far. I would recommend against sending any type of payment before you actually have the pups in front of you. There have been many stories on this site of people being ripped off and they all start with prices that sound too good to be true. Does this breeder have a website? And I am far from an expert but they don't look 100% pure. 100% adorable yes. I purchased my 2 babies from a backyard breeder and we have spent thousands on medical bills. I would not give my 2 babies up for a million dollars but I would never go back to that "greeder". A top notch breeder will stop breeding any dog that shows signs of genetic defects (bad knees, hips, livers, etc). The "greeder" will keep churning them out just to make a profit. And you will end up footing the bill later. You are better off spending more money up front because you could end up spending 5x as much down the line. Good luck with whatever decision you make. You will never be the same after you bring a yorkie into your life. They will work their way into your heart and will always be there.

| Welcome to YT, the pup looks like a mix to me, no one sells a pure bred yorkie for $500.not even BYB (back yard breeders). If you're looking for a pure bred yorkie I would run as fast as I can from this so called breeder.

| I bought my Gidget at 7 wks from a breeder I found on line. When I asked about seeing the puppies at her house, she said she was very leery of having people she didn't know come to her house. I got the impression that she was single (looked to be in her late 40's or early 50's. Gidget is now 2 years old. I met the breeder on a Sunday afternoon in a shopping center parking lot. She was so adorable that I put all reasoning to the wind and paid $600 and brought her home. No AKC papers but did have shot records. Took her to Vet on Monday morning and he said she was in good health. Was on pins and needles for months after that just waiting for the shoe to drop. Fortunately, her only Vet visits to this date have been well checkups and booster shots. I would never recommend a transaction like this to anyone else. But fortunately it all worked out for me. |

| Nope! Pure bred looks identical to my Nonna’s two Yorkies she had! The breeder turned out to be amazing! She has been breeding Yorkies for 15 years. The reason so cheap is she’s older and doesn’t need the money and wants everyone to have a chance to own this amazing breed. He has all legitimate AKC paperwork with DNA. He has all of his shots, dew claws removed, and his tail docked. His father and mother are gorgeous and tiny! The pictures above doesn’t do it ANY justice, he is beautiful! Don’t use Android phones when taking pictures, LOL. Last edited by dellarte; 04-19-2018 at 09:57 AM. |

And if this breeder actually does allow that pup out of her hands at 8 weeks old, that is the cardinal sign of an unethical Yorkshire Terrier breeder. And that is according to the Yorkshire Terrier breed club (ytca.org). You asked for the real answers - and this is what they are. She is doing this for money, period, not bc "she’s older and doesn’t need the money and wants everyone to have a chance to own this amazing breed." -- I don't believe you'd really be gullible enough to believe that line from her....at least I'd hope not.
