| Skin Infection Problem My Smokie has a skin infection for the last three weeks. The Vet put him on clavamox for two weeks but it did not clear up. Now he is on Simplicef for one week and one more to go. This infection doesn’t seem to want to go away. Last visit to Vet which was today. Recommend he see a dermatologist. Vet says with the two antibiotics they put him on this infection should have been cleared up. Has anyone else had this problem with their pup? Was the issue resolved? I am really concerned that his skin problem isn’t cleared up by now. Thanks for any advice or recommendations that might work. He does have an appointment to see the dermatologist in two weeks. I don’t know what else to do at this point. Concerned 😟 mom. |

| Hi. The dermatologist will probably figure it out. My late little Katy was diagnosed with allergies about three years ago. The vet put her on a Chlorhexidine shampoo. I've seen different vet offices sell equivalent products under different names. The last product she used was called "Douxo." Last edited by KatysMom; 04-17-2018 at 01:55 PM. |

| Callie seems to be prone to them but they always seem to go away after the first set of antibiotics. What has worked well for us is an injection of I think Convenia. Does your pup have allergy problems? If so are you treating the allergies? I would definitely go to the specialist though if it hasn't cleared up after two antibiotics.

| Skin Infection Problem Yes Smokie does have allergies. He was on Apoquel but was just recently put on Cytopoint injections. He also has been prescribed and use the Hexachlor-K shampoo for over a year. He has had minor skin issues in the past but this is the first time he has had a skin infection. It came out of nowhere. I certainly hope the dermatologist can figure it out. I am really upset about it. Thanks for the responses.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | Skin infections are not uncommon in kiddos w/ bad allergies (or add'l other issues). Not sure why the vet would've tried Clavamox...sort of a waste of time there, imo. The Simplicef is the gold standard of care (or Covenia injection) - usually the Simplicef is given for 28 days - that's what we always have done. Most likely, the infection is staph intermedius in your kiddo - however, if it continues to prove resistant after the 2nd week on Simplicef, then a culture would be absolutely be in order and the Vet Derm would do that. I would hold off on assessing until the Simplicef is in his system for a good 2 weeks. Are there *any* other issues going on w/ him...even unrelated...?

| Skin Infection Problem Hi Wylie's Mom. Thanks so much for responding to my post. Smokie does have allergies that he is being treated for. He doesn't have any other issues going on with him. I appreciate the information on Simplicef. I am so glad this forum is available to me. I do feel a bit better knowing this isn't something uncommon in dogs with bad allergies. This is the first time I have owned a Yorkie. I have had Smokie for 4 years next month. I try to make the best decisions for him. I don't hesitate to take him to the Vet if he needs medical attention. From the responses I have received, it seems I am doing the right things. Thanks again so much. I will keep the post updated.

Furbutts = LOVE Donating Member Moderator | I hear you on that - darn Cushings, ugh! Is she titrated correctly yet, or are you and the vet still tinkering with getting that right? I know it took us a good year to get the meds right for Wylie !

| Thanks. She has Cushings so it seems to be a big off and on thing with her.

| Still tinkering. I have to take all three in together tomorrow . They are all due for something. Joey ends up being like a little 10 pound weight because I have to give him Benadryl before he gets his shot which makes him tired and want to be held the whole time. Penny gets so excited she pees whenever we go. It’s a great adventure lol.
