Fence - Fencing Hi all, I hope someone can help! I need a fence for my adorable Yorkie granddog. This will just be for peeing and pooping. She will get exercise and playtime outside of this. It would be more for early morning/middle of night, (supervised of course) and sometimes during the day...when she can't be walked. I don't want the invisible fencing. my questions: 1. how big should it be? 2. what should it be made of? 3. how tall should it be? 4. does the surface have to be grass or can it be gravel or something else? thanks! p.s.: I don't know if the image is showing above the signature thing that says "just a furball when my daughter got her".....I'm new to this image thing in the signature.... |
We have a little patch of fake turf from Home Depot in our back yard - and it looks so great/neat after several years - I'd get the turf if I were you. The fence only needs to be tall enough so that she cannot jump over, if you want her contained to that area. How big/small you go can depend upon how often you want to clean up..ie, if you don't want to constantly be picking up poo - then you'll need it at least a little bigger. Ours is maybe 12ft x 6ft or so...? |
Is the best way to respond to someone the "quick reply" in the lower right of your answer to me? I'm still so new to this! thanks! the fake turf idea is a great idea, I hadn't thought of that. I hope to hear from others too! and your little furbaby is sooooo cute! If you ever come to Boston with her, I want to meet her! thanks |
Make sure you know how high your yorkie can jump. My Boomer use to be able to jump over the gate and it was 36 inches high. He never got out because he was afraid to cross it but he definitely could jump in the air higher. I also had a friend's yorkie than could jump even higher and would always escape the gate. |
We just needed a little picket fence to enclose an area on the side yard but I had to add pickets and weave screening in between to keep the little escape artists in! |
Not really answering your fencing question, but regarding the turf, I came across this awesome DIY project for a porch potty: DIY porch potty - Album on Imgur If I had a garage or backyard, I would have totally made this! I ended up buying something similar for my condo balcony. |
awetizm1 "Mom to Thumper" wow; she could jump that high! good to know; how big was Boomer? so I can compare this 8 lb. Yorkie to her/him.....thanks! |

My grand dog visits our acre fenced in yard, BUT she is so small she can get out the space between the gate and it's post, 3 1/2 inches. I bought two children's play yards and put the two together. She loves the freedom. I love the safety. I can fold it up when she goes home, move it so it doesn't mark the grass. It works. Aren't grand dogs great! We loved ours so much, I adopted a ten year old rescue Yorkie at Christmas so my collies and I wouldn't be so sad when she goes home after her time here. |
1 Attachment(s) I've always liked the looks of something like this. We have horse fencing at our property so does nothing to contain the dogs so I've been wanting to have something like this added for the pups to go out off leash protected. They can play off leash if we are playing ball or doing something but for quick potty breaks at night etc, a little fenced in area would nice. So I saved this photo - maybe it'll give you an idea! :) It's just white picket fencing. Not sure how costly it is. |

We have a picket fence like the one in Brittany's photo above. If you use a picket fence, make sure your baby cannot fit through it. My 9 pound boys can fit through ours. My dad didn't believe me until he saw Teddy put his shoulders through while I had him on leash. :D Teddy could have slipped through even easier when he was younger and narrower. You could add wire fencing from the garden center -- just make sure it doesn't have any sharp edges. |

Yes,I clicked on it and it came up for me so it is possible. Just wanted to answer your question. Try clicking on it again. It sometimes takes a second click, for me any how, to get things to come up. Just fiddle with it. It should work. |

Yes it is supposed to open up larger cause I clicked on it and a pretty picture of a white house with an adorable white picket fence with two fences came up. |

I recall when I first joined, your first few posts are 'moderated' in an attempt to keep spammers out. Once you get over a certain # of posts, you won't have that issue anymore. |
1 Attachment(s) Before I fenced in my yard I had an area appox. 24 ft long x 8 ft wide right off my deck and against the side of my house made out of white lattice, I had the 4 foot high lattice because my 17 pound girl given enough running room could jump that height, the lattice also comes in 2 foot high sections. |
