Weight Hi all, My baby will be two in March with that said she is very tiny. Vet says t-cup, given that she only weighs 2.5lbs. My question is...I can feel her spine and ribs, is this normal? She is very healthy and active she eats all the time with no problem. :-) Is there something I can give her to help her put on a little weight? Or should I just let her be? |
It's actually healthy and considered ideal to be able to feel some ribs. I dunno about spine too, she might just have high metabolism from being very active. |
What did the vet say about her build and weight? What food is she currently eating? Does she get treats, and if so, which ones? Mario is healthy and very energetic. When I run my hand down his fur, I cannot feel his spine, but if run just down his spine with my fingertips, I can feel it. I can feel his ribs in places as well, but cannot see them since he is medium length hair. Mario is on Canidae chicken, but I am about to change him to the Canidae weight management formula and just watch him closely. The Canidae chicken and rice has a pretty high fat content that concerns me for pancreatitis reasons (no symptoms or signs, just being careful). Mario also gets a variety of treats through the day since we are training hard most days. Mario will be two in May. |
You do want to be able to feel some ribs, but not too much either - they do need some padding. If you need her to gain a little weight, either adjust her food amounts and/or give little treats of cheese or peanut butter, which are calorie dense. |
My gal is very thin too but she spends just as much time playing n prancing as she does in car seat n laps. My vet said as long as she eats her 1/3 cup a day of food then it is all good. |
I free feed and my girl eats about a cup and a half a day and I can feel her ribs and spine also. She gets a few treats too. Vet says she's great. Just go by what the vet says. |
Toto is very skinny too. If I feed him more he just ends up pooping more. He is so wound up and always on alert I think he is just always running on all cylinders so he burns more calories than Uni who is always lazy and whatevers about everything. Toto is barely noticeably smaller than Uni but he is not even 5 pounds and Uni is almost 7. |
