just got our yorkie 3 year old male We just got Thor last night. He let my wife bath him he smelled of ciggrette smoke from previous owner. growling a bit now snipping a bit. Hiding under bed now.. Has not eaten or drank yet but i do understand it takes time to trust us. How long can he go without food and water. Daughter tried to take him out for a walk but he would not budge. He is 3 years old weighs just under 5 lbs and very handsome boy hope he warms up |
Just make the food and water available to him at all times and he will probably amble over to it and start nibbling when he is ready. Make sure he see it though ! They usually do well when they don't feel forced, at least that has been my experience. All the best with your new baby. PS.......Don't forget to post pictures of your little boy ! |
Welcome Hi. Welcome to YT and happy to hear you have a new fur baby. Cigarette smell not a good start, but glad he smells sweeter now. Sounds like he is rather stressed in the new environment and that is why he is hiding, not eating etc. The nipping is probably fear related and as soon as he is settled in, that has to be addressed as I am sure you will do. Wont walk either!!! He is giving you a hard time, :) But he will soon adapt. Perhaps some chicken or yummy treats fed by hand might coax him into trusting you and eating? If he won't drink you might try getting water into his mouth by plastic syringe, as he should be hydrated? But he is obviously scared under the bed and will probably bite if you try to do anything with him in that state. Hope the treats help to get him out in the open and in a happier mood. Good luck, but much patience will be needed here. Hope he was not ill-treated in his last home and you have to get over that history. |
Thanks for the info this is new to us. Have to figure out how to post his picture. I giggled he is a bit scared and will take time to trust us. The good thing he let us bath him and put harness on him then he got a little cranky. Wife said she could tell he was attached to former owner who was having a difficult time giving him up. |
Awww...the poor little guy - I bet he's just *so* scared and even possibly traumatized by losing his home, where he's been for years...that can be very, very tough on some dogs, while others adjust very well. Just be patient, understanding, compassionate, loving, and calm...and he will come 'round. Talk to him in soft voices a lot, offer little treats to him...like for when he looks you in the eyes and/or when he comes to you. Walks may just be way too scary for him right now. Did the previous owner walk him? If not, he could have no clue how to do it. Keep us posted on how he does and welcome to YT! :) |

Bless his little heart....he is just as much distressed as his owner was at giving him up....just be patient, allow HIM to make the first moves......I was going to ask if you are giving him distilled water....the water he was drinking at his other home is from a different source, other part of town, etc than what he is getting now...could cause upset tummy/diarrhea....I always send my pups home with instructions to use filtered/distilled water for a few days, until you can gradually get him switched over to "your" water.....just be very patient and loving and understanding with him, move at HIS pace, and all will be great! |
We have city water same as previous owner we filter all our water with a Berkey water filter |
New baby So happy to know he was loved and well treated before you adopted him. He must miss his momma. How sweet that he let you bath him and put his harness on. I guess that was enough for the moment and he put his little paws down........no more!! Have you tried walking him around the house and then the yard, where it is more familiar, before the big wide world outside? He may take Gerbers chicken baby food licked from your finger to get some nutrition into him until he eats normal dog food. Perhaps a good quality canned food and then kibble? So much change for a little newbie. |
Thanks my thoughts also . Still trying to figure how to get pic posted |
Pics Good luck with the pics!! I have been here years and still cannot do that! The sizing seems to be the issue and my computer skills are severely wanting. Enjoy your new baby and please let us know of progress. :) |
pic of Mighty Thor |
Are you giving/offering him the same food as his previous owner? Patience, patience, gentle soft voice, lots of love, then more patience is probably best for now. |
Thor You did it, congrats!! What a gorgeous dog, he would melt your heart. Doesn't look like he would be capable of any naughtiness!! He really is cute and his hair beautiful. |
Thanks dottie. He did take some chicken tonight |
