Male vs Female Hi Everyone, I'm new to YorkieTalk. Currently mom to 3 year old Max, and in three weeks will pick up new yorkie pup! Can't wait... My question is whether to get another male, or get a female. Max has been amazing. He's perfect, actually. Very affectionate, obediant, and all around great family member. I'm not sure to believe what I've read or not, regarding the differences in gender. Hoping to hear your experiences!! Looking forward to learning a lot here, and gaining some friends, too... pjm0345 |
1 Attachment(s) It is really up to you!!!! I have 2 boys and they are great!!! A lot of people on here have 2 boys, 2 girls or 1 boy and 1 girl!!! It is really up to you and what you want!!!!! But good luck in your decision that you make :) I attached a pic of my two boys!!! |
I have personally have a lot of luck with only having 1 female and as many males as I want. This is just my preference. I find that having male dogs are great because I am always alpha female around them. I feel it makes it easier to be pack leader. I currently have 3 males and 1 female (1 male is not a Yorkie) and the dynamics are pretty good. I think 2 males is great, but a male and female usually get along well. When you add another female is when I usually start having conflicts because females like to be the boss. If you get a female I would expect her to probably be the boss, not always, but most of the time it works that way. Good luck and I am sure that whatever you choose it will be great. If you have a very outgoing dog, I would get one of the less outgoing, not the shy or timid, but not the pack leader. If you have a less outgoing dog then go for the leader of the pack type dog for this new puppy. |
Thanks, great advice...I've heard the males are more attentive and affectionate. |
Your pups are adorable... |
My boys pretend to act like they don't want me to kiss or love on them. But as soon as it is bed time they are right up under me trying to get as close to me as possible lol!!! I haven't had a lot of girl dogs so I am not sure how they are!!! All I know is I love my boys!!!! |
Thank you!!! |
Most will advise to get the opposite sex since they will bond quicker. I've read that getting the same sex, they might not get along. So if you decide to get the same sex bring Max along and see if he accepts the new addition to the family. G'luck. |

Just like humans!! :D |
Of our Yorkies, our female is currently the most affectionate. She loves to cuddle and snuggle and give kisses. My older male puts up with my loving all over him and lets me cuddle him, but he doesn't come looking for cuddles the way Raksha does. My male puppy isn't as affectionate as his sister. He puts up with my kisses and sometimes gives them. It really all depends on the dog for sure. I do think that male dogs bond well with a female owner, but so far Raksha is bonding well with my daughter so I think it just depends on the puppy and their personality. Good luck and I hope you find the perfect addition to your family. |
Thanks for the great advice! I'll just trust myself when the moment comes! lol |
To be honest I like both in any combo, lol. Thats not much help but I've had 2 female dogs...then added a male...then lost one female and added another male, and another male..and now a female again. I was thinking about which was more affectionate, but each dog had its own distinct personality....they were all snugglers in their own ways, some more then others. I figure its just like having kids, lol. A crapshoot...you just have to hope they bond and get along, lol. |
Thanks. Hopefully some of it has to do with upbringing? lol |
lol pjm, yep! Just like with kids:) You can do everything right and still have some little glitches along the way:D |
You never know. I had 2 boys and hey just fought. They would play but everyday they fought for dominance. Depends on the personality. I now had on boy and 2 girls. The know the pecking order. 3 lb Winnie is the boss.. She rules everything. Whimzy 4 lbs is second but they play. Moki will give in. Until its dinner then they don't Mess with him. He will mow down both of them anytime he wants. A larger 7# Male. But he's nice but always hungry.. He would be 15lbs is I let him.. The girls stop eating when full. He will eat like theres never any food. So my point is all depends on THEIR personality. Can have all alpha types |
I have a very unproven theory - that if the breeder is female the pups all sexes will naturally gravitate towards a female if there is one in their permanent home. In terms of sexes I believe personality or temperament is key - that is to say of your current dog or dogs and the intended future one. Two dominants are likely to rub each other the wrong way at least for a time until it gets sorted out. But I will tell you the worst fights I have seen are between female dogs - which is not to say I have not seen fights between males - but my experience is that it is much shorter and once over stays resolved. |

My boys are not the ideal pair because they are both very strong types. Would be better for one to be more submissive. Thankfully, Max, the top doggy, is patient enough to let his little brother get away with a lot. |
My breeder is female. All the dogs like me best. |
I do all the fun training. If we both call them they always come to me first. But that really doesn't me they like me best. I just like to think so |
I have a male and female. They are very different in their own loving ways. The male is more independent but has times when all he wants is too snuggle. At the dog park he will run and play with other dogs and people The female is more loving and wants to be close to me when other people or dogs are around so at the park she is right with me at all times and doesn't play much with others but she does try to be the referee when dogs start running and tussling. It's like she is trying to warn them that they can get hurt. The only time I have ever seen her really take to another dog was when someone brought a really tiny yorkie puppy into the park and she just loved all over it. |
Thanks everyone for the awesome advice. I'm going tomorrow for my final visit (my third) before we pick up in 2 weeks. Maybe I'll know after tomorrow??? Hopefully. I just can't wait. I know there will be times when I think what did I do? Max is just soooo easy...But, I know in the long run I'm going to be so happy we added another baby to our family. |
Good luck...I just got a 12 week old girl and I have a 7 month old girl. They are getting along great! The little one wants to do everything that big sis does, including pottying outside😀 |
I have had 4 females, three were 3 years part, they were wonderful with each other, older ones passed away, my baby was now 8 years old. I bought her a play mate, 8 week old female, the older one loved and play more with the new baby they she had with the older girls. All my girls are now passed, 18 months ago I rescued a 2 1/2 boy. I see no difference between male or female. my females were as cuddley as my boy is. Good luck in your decision. |
