Rabies vaccination... is YEARLY?
 
So I was looking at Chloe's vet chart and it says her rabies vaccination is due AGAIN next April and also a Canine Distemper vaccine?

Can someone please fill me in on this because I did not know these vaccines are done annually or if they are even necessary to be done more than once. I would like to know what everyone else does so that when April comes I know what to do.

Some vets offices (including mine) push annual vaccinations. I asked our vet for the 3 year plan. Rabies is required by law every 3 years in our state.

The other vaccinations are voluntary and there are different opinions on how many and how often they should be given. Look in the YT Library for more info, and do a search in the health sections for the numerous threads on the subject.

How old is Chloe?

My ZoE had her first rabies shot at 5-6 months, her booster at a year and a half (3 yr shot). And then this coming spring she will have another 3 year rabies shot when she will be four and a half years old. Then her next will be at seven and a half years old.

She's 13 months, almost 14 months, and got her vaccine in April of last year when she was about 6 months also. So at 1 year you get the 3 year shot?

Has she had her puppy 1 year boosters? If she has only received one rabies vaccine they normally like to do another one a year later and the do it again in three years depending on your states law.

Yes. At 1 1/2 years old, she'll get a 3 year rabies booster shot. Then will go 3 years before before she'll need another rabies shot when she is 41/2 years old.

Rabies vaccine every 3 years, Distemper once every year. I believe my last pup at the age of 12 y/o they stopped giving her the Distemper vac.

I also. Seem to hear because they are young their first isa year then they can get a three year one

Thanks guys, this makes sense to me now. For some reason I thought the first shot is the only one needed like a human vaccination.

Distemper is not needed yearly that is over vaccinated it should be every 3 years at the most but some vets are switching to every 5 years.

Since she's only 13 months, then yeah, she would get another rabies. But here on out, you will do every 3 years.

I wish tennessee would change their laws. We are required do do annual rabies :(

Thanks for the heads up Taylor, my past pup I got was 1996, she was getting distemper shots every year, then I moved permanently to Pa. the vet I used for summer visits now became my permanent vet, when my pup reached about 12 y/o and was due for her shots, the vet said at that age she no longer needed the distemper vac. Now I have little boy 3 y/o, didn't know they changed the distemper to every 3 / 5 years. I will ask my vet if they they do the 5 year vac.
