Advice on adding new member Ta daaaa! We have been thinking and longing for another baby girl to add to our family of one. The time is here. One and a half year old Zoey gets a sister tomorrow! I sure could use some advice on how to introduce a new one to the existing one! Didn't realize there was a "way" to do it. It is a long 4 hour trip one way and we don't want to leave Zoey home alone for 8 hours so we are taking her with us. Do you think this is wise introducing Zoey to her on none home territory? They won't be put together as Zoey has her car seat. And any advice when we get home? |
Ooooo, how exciting!! Pics please, when you can! I think it's a great idea to introduce them on neutral non-home territory, that's wonderful. As far as adjustment, we got Marcel when Wylie was about 1.5yrs old, and at first Wylie was a little confused -- he became more needy/anxious for about a month and we just supported him through that time...giving him lots of extra love and attention and he adjusted just fine. Then when we got Pfeiffer, both the boys were just all "okay whatevs, no biggie". :) |

Should I exposed them together supervised of course when I get home or let the sniffing out take over with the baby in her pen.... |

What time do you pick her up, are you dying w/ anticipation!!!??? Did you name her yet or are you going to see her personality first? |
It's a wonderful idea as long as the dog's psyches eventually mesh; otherwise, you could have some problems with the dogs always vying for leadership/alpha/dominance in their pack hierarchy, requiring you to step forth as a strong but gentle leader - and it can get very old. Most dogs, however, delight in having (an)other dog(s) in the home and truly love and enjoy having a buddy or two by their side to get help them get through domesticated life within 4 walls without much to stimulate them on a daily basis. |
Oh, how exciting it is to be getting a new sister for Zoey! You must be wanting tomorrow to come real quick! Ann is giving you great advice on how to introduce them. It is good to have them meet at a neutral place like you are doing. I look forward to hearing about her (do you have a name) and definitely a picture of them! :) |

What an adorable new baby you have to go with your existing precious girl! Lucky you! Enjoy her! |
Both of your little ones are precious! I wish you health, love, laughter, and happiness with your beautiful baby girls. |
Thanks so much Aren't they a joy?! We have so much fun with them and they are so smart! |
Wow, they are adorable! What fun! Double the fun and trouble! The only issues I've ever had with introducing dogs was the female/female thing. But, as little as they are, I'm guessing even if they do bicker, it's not like you're trying to break up a battle between two shepherds (I speak from painful experience). I adore my 'midgets' as my DD calls them. Just walk between the squabbling pair and break it up with you legs - no serious bite risk to you that way. (I seriously do NOT see a problem with your two girls, but, just a heads up from some one who has been there, done that with large breed working dogs. My Yorkies and Poodles are a dream to live with. Wish I did this for myself much sooner. We, of course, will need many, many pictures and videos of the sisters living, loving and playing together. ;) What a happy Holiday Season you will have this year! |
Awe so precious wish i could have got boo that little |
Both pups look like real sweethearts. :) Sisters, a year and a half apart. Congrats! |

As far as action, when Marcel and Pfeiffer were little - I'd let them be in the action for awhile since they were puppies and puppies generally like some action...plus, good human socialization for them. Then, I'd put them in a bedroom for some quiet time where they could sleep. Worked great. Btw, I changed your user name spelling for ya :). |
Congratulations on the new addition!! Zoey and Izzy are going to make an adorable duo. Having seen your videos of Zoey, I know you are a great trainer. Trick training helped my boys forge a bond. Going through our daily routine fostered togetherness. I agree with Ann's advice to give Izzy some exposure to your family and the action, and then give her some rest alone. Looking forward to photos of the girls together! |
Awe Congrats on your new little fur butt! So precious!! I got to love on a pup last night and so funny how fast I can fall in love with them even when they are not mine. I am so excited for you!! Merry Christmas to you and your family and enjoy!!!! |
From someone who just brought a yorky into the home with a papilon who is a tad bigger. Boo the yorky is a male and the pap is a girl. They love each other if i seperate them they neither one will rest till the other is back. BUT as of late they have went at each other as if they will kill each other. Of coarse i have broke it up. Boo has been the aggressor actually more often than princess. Sometimes if he sees me eating a snack he will keep her away and it can cause a fight. Sometimes i think they get jelouse and possesive of me. One night boo was asleep on the bed. Soon as i called for princess. Cause she has always slet with momma. Well soon as i said her name he jumped up and crawled like a cat to the edge of the bed. The groweled and pounced on her. Then they sometimes play and one or the other gets to rough. This has all just began this month. We have had boo three months. Putting boo in the. Cage when hes bad. Getting a bigger crate for princess this week. So watch them and signs. I make a point to love on both but seems the more i do it the more posessive of me they get. Not sure what to do. |

Runs away when she wants to play but runs right back for more! |
