help with medication My 6 month old puppy sophie is going to be on 2 medications for some time and it's liquid and she fights me to the end to get her to take it. I use the syringes they gave me and trust me it's not easy getting her to take it. Does anyone have any suggestions on an easy way to get her to take her meds? Thanks. |
Can you mix it with peanutbutter on a plate? Around our home, a spoon full of peanutbutter makes the medicine go down! I put it on tablets they have to take, mix it with liquids even wipe a tiny on a new chew toy to get them over the "ewww it smells new" thing my girls like to try to pull on me. :) It works for us! Thank you for your suggestion. I mixed it wit a Lil strawberry yogurt and she got most of it down. Pills r another story she is to smart and will lick the peanut butter and leave the pill behind. Lol she's to funny. |
For liquid meds I use milk and pills I use cheese. They never notice:p |
Bubba is weird, he will lick it off a spoon! With Sissy I usually just use the syringe but put in in side pocket between their cheek and their teeth. For pills, sometimes pill pockets sometimes cheese (Sissy especially likes Sargento thin sliced Provolone) :D |
Pills should always be given back of throat, hold mouth closed and stroke throat. If you start as a puppy (Worm pills example), should be easy, won't print here a visual is better, Vet should have showed/demonstrated how to give pills when prescribing. Those pill treats you get to hide pills in give you no guarantee the meds went where they were supposed to and worse yet pup might bite/chew a pill that should be in stomach before dissolving. |
If you handle your pup daily it should allow you do just about anything, example teething, I check mouth daily for loose teeth and problems. Ginger and all my dogs let me give them pills or check mouth with no fuss. Your dog should trust you always. Liquid, put something on the syringe to get the licking going, I don't know how to describe this other the past the bump of to tongue, but past the bump but not down the throat, and slowly so you don't drown the dog. |

It is really simple and quick once you know how unless you have arthritis or some other dexterity problem. Your pup should allow this type of handling just to check for tooth or other mouth problems or if it picks something up that you didn't see. I'm not trying to convert you if you do not like this method, but would prefer new people at least know and try this method first as I feel it is better in the long run. |

As I said, I'm not trying to convert you, I am posting for new people so they have their Vet show them the proper way. And no you do not hold their head straight up, just slightly and just pet the throat, but again, Please have your Vet show/demonstrate so you get it right and don't stress your pup. Once you understand how to do it, you'll know how to get the pill far enough back that the pup will swallow it with out the head slightly up/stroking. |

Medication I am no help for liquid meds except the syringe technique in the side of the mouth followed quickly by a treat to make him swallow. With solid pills I give a treat first then the treat wrapped around the pill, again followed quickly by another treat. Usually it is all done before he gets what I'm up to. :-) No time to lick the good stuff off and spit out the pill. Luckily he swallows everything whole and this works, but I guess if they chew, all is lost! |
