Yes Dr sibet in Tn was called she said to retest in 3 month again & that she may have inquirer another shunt this is new to me because I thought they were born with them. Still on meds & L/d dog food my Dr just cant belive this test # before sugery 241/235 after sugery # 300/266 THEY SHOULD ONLY BE 20 FOR NORMAL I. Pray Dec test are better

I'm certainly no vet, so I'm speaking from an amateur's perspective. My Lola had liver shunt surgery 5 years ago and had her 3+ month bloodwork done also. The bloodwork was not good because she had "acquired" shunting due to the surgery. It's called MVD - microvascular dysplaysia. It's not terribly uncommon for this to occur after surgery in these little ones. We do annual bloodwork (no BAT) but Dr. Tobias told me that Lola's bile acids will never be normal. She said we needed to be careful with her proteins, but Lola is not on any meds and the surgery was 5+ years ago. Lola is doing great. Hopefully this is the case with your baby. I think University of TN is going to give you the best care and advice possible. Keep doing what you're doing - sounds like she already feels a little better! Good luck - I'll say prayers for your little one!

hi thank you may i ask how long after your sugery did u stop with the meds & how high is your blood test now

I knew about acquired shunts, but I did not know that they occurred in dogs who have surgery for a shunt.

Praying Lil Missi will respond to meds and will improve with time and careful management. Keep us updated on her progress.

Gosh, I could be wrong and it wouldn't be the 1st time, but it was my understanding that sometimes if they had a large shunt that was "closed off" that they may develop or acquire these microvascular shunts. Lola's MVD is much less dangerous than her initial shunt; in fact, she is on no meds and Dr. Tobias has her on no special diet.

Lil missi I have not redone her Bile Acids since 3 months post op. Her other bloodwork has remained normal. I have it done annually. She has not been on any meds for her liver / shunt since her surgery.
