Traveling with a new puppy soon We will be picking up our new yorkie puppy in the next few weeks from a friend out of state. I am gathering all the "normal" puppy supplies but curious how you would handle bringing a new puppy home over a 9 hr drive. I know this isn't ideal, but I also know that puppies are shipped all the time too....which doesn't seem ideal either. Obviously, I will have food, snacks, etc on hand and will stop for lots of water and potty breaks. But is he going to be safe to potty in such public areas when he hasn't been fully vaccinated yet? Am I overthinking this too much? I don't really want to use pee pads when we are home, but have wondered if it would be best for his health and safety to place him on one when we are traveling? I know he isn't a china doll, but being a small baby, I understand he will be more susceptible to germs and infections until he is fully vaccinated. I am a RN, so I am probably overthinking this a bit too....but better to always be prepared beforehand. Thanks for suggestions on how to get baby Pluto home happy and healthy! :) Amy |
Welcome to yorkietalk! You aren't overthinking it. Or, well, if you are, join the club :p I wouldn't put him on the ground until he is fully vaccinated. Parvovirus could be on the grass, is very contagious, and could be deadly to a young puppy. Has his breeder...your friend already taken him to the vet for shots? Most breeders do at least 2 rounds of boosters before they let them go. How old is he? Ask for a shot record. It should have the vet clinic's info. Make sure he gets a little food and water every couple hours. Maybe some Nutrical to keep on hand incase of hypoglycemia. Lethargy, trembling, slow movememt, etc. And this seems obvious but do make sure he is restrained properly. A puppy sitting in your lap is not safe from airbags. |
I will definitely get his shot record before we leave to come home. I considered Nutrical and will pick some of that up, just to be safe in case he gets stressed on the trip. Unless I hear of a better idea, I will probably pick up a pack of pee pads just to lay down for him on the trip home too. I know my fenced yard is safe, but letting him out to pee in "unknown" areas when he isn't fully protected makes me cringe! |
I don't think you are overthinking it! I would also use the puppy pads. We just got our yorkie pup, Maggie, a couple of days ago and she is 7 weeks old and only had one set of shots. So she hasn't been put on the ground yet. I don't want her to use puppy pads but for now I feel it is best until she gets all of her vaccinations at twelve weeks. After that I'll start training her to go outside. She will still be young, but also older and I think she will understand better about going outside to do her business. We travel to deliver our pups to their new owners. We have found that a crate is best. We line the crate with inexpensive short nap towels (their claws can get caught easily). At our preplanned rest stops we handle,feed and throw the towels away. Nutracal is a must and even at 12 weeks we use a ground up dry food plus the needed water. Our biggest problem is all the people who make over them and want one right now. Hope this is of value. Ed and Kathy |
