ZoE is pad trained. For us it is best. I work multiple jobs and my schedule can be erratic. I don't expect myself to leave for work in the morning, and not use the bathroom at all, all day long, until I get home in the evening, and I don't expect ZoE to either. Personally, I think it's cruel to force a dog to hold it all day. Having the pads available to her whenever she needs them, just makes sense. Pad training also makes traveling easy. I've put a pad down in bathrooms, my kid's dorm room & apartment, and even in the open trunk of my car, and ZoE will go on it. And living in Michigan, with the horrendously snowy winters, I can't imagine using anything else. There is three feet of snow outside my back door right now and the temps have been below zero many days of the past few months. Who wants to be outside in that? |
Toby *was* 100% outside trained. He would stand at the gate and whine whenever he needed to go out. It *was* great. We would put his harness and leash on, take him outside and he would do his business. Then we brought Max home. Max is not trained at all--and now Toby isn't either. UGH! Max likes to go potty anywhere and everywhere--and at first his favorite place to potty was Toby's crate. We had to nix that one pretty quickly! ;) His least favorite way to potty? On a harness and leash in the yard. So now Toby has regressed and Max isn't trained. It is like having two toddlers in the house. |
Leo goes outside 90% of the time. I am 90% trained :( He is 25 weeks old, hardest dog I've ever trained. He will only use the pad if he is left in the x-pen for a few hours. I go out with him every time he goes out. We have a fenced yard ... but he can slip through, he's so tiny. I feel it's best I go out with him anyway, that way I can see what he's done :aimeeyork |
I have a Doggy Door out to a very secure area for my guys, and it's available to them almost 24/7. The only time they won't go out on their own is when it's raining, and then we put paper down right in front of the Door, and they use it. The minute it stops raining, they're out there ! |

Outside on the lawn! We used pee pads when I first brought her home at 12 weeks, but started taking her outside about a week after I got her. Wanted her to get use to us first since her whole world changed. |
Cherry and Sammy go outside, but some mornings I find "presents" in my closet. |

If it's #1 Cookie will usually just go anywhere on the grass, or if it is raining or just rained heavily she'll pee on the back patio. But for #2 she almost always prefers one of the flower gardens in back, even if it's super muddy outside after a rain. She will not poop on the patio. |
100% outside, no matter the weather. He loves being outside. Winston has never gone potty inside, never, not once...since day one @ 8 weeks old. Bragging? Yes! Thank you very much... |
Lexi goes outside 100% of the time. If we are traveling, she may use a pad in the bathroom. She doesn't really care for being on a leash to go. We have an area that we made just for her. It is a little fenced spot right off our deck. I put a piece of outdoor carpet at the bottom of the stairs and this is where she pees mostly. She goes poo in a flower bed in the bark. On rainy days she may poo on the deck quickly so she can get out of the rain quickly. Kind of a princess. |
Joel goes only outside, front or back yard, no matter the weather. |
