Heartworm Vaccination? Has anyone used the new vaccination for heartworms on here? What do you think about it? They are now offering it in my area. After a negative heartworm test the shot is suppose to be administered every 6 months. The cost is around $25.00 for the shot, and the test around here is around $25.00. I wandered if anyone on here had researched it and what you think about it. |

It doesn't prevent intestinal worms like other heartworm prevention. They only way I would use it would be if I couldn't medicate an animal or if they were allergic to any drugs that were common in heartworm prevention. Although, I haven't researched it either but would worry if they had a reaction to it.... it's in their system for 6 months. It kind of scares me and there are heartworm meds that don't cost as much. Example... if you have to deworm your dog b/c they get hook worms. How much is the dewormer going to be? Another $25? And with other prevention they will cover the deworming cost if it comes up as long as they can see history from buying from a vet. Of course, I'm sure they would want a negative fecal when beggining the prevention but most people get 1-2 (fecal/s) a year anyways. |

Yep, Proheart is it... I couldn't think of the name. It use to be around and they took it off the market and it has came back on in the last 2 years. |
I don't like the idea of that amount of medicine at one time in a small breed dog. I might consider it for my larger dog, but then..if it isn't controlling other worms, he's not fully protected. Also, my big dog's pill controls fleas, too. Just wish it worked to deter ticks. |
Nah. I'm fine with the heartworm meds monthly. Too new for my liking. |
Pro Heart 6, is not new at all. They actually took it off the market several years ago and now it's back. They had several problems with it. My opinion only I would not trust it at all. My Vet will not even have this in her Vet Hospital. |
If it is Proheart 6 I would not touch it with a ten foot pole. It was taken off the market due to many deaths. The preservative was changed and now it is available again. I don't see any reason to take the chance. Last I knew your life had to be signed away in waivers to use it.:rolleyes: |

The more I read about it, I think it is scary too. I have read that it may not be good for older dogs too, I have a 9 year old baby. Every thing makes me a little scared when it comes to my new baby, she is 1 year old and only 3 pounds. Just was wondering if anyone had knowledge about it. After reading that it was pulled and brought back and not really changed, I am thinking it would be a little too much of a risk. |
