Does anyone have a perfectly healthy dog? Semi serious question. :-) but don't get mad at me for asking!! When I read posts here it seems that no one has a perfectly healthy dog?? Or is it, like life, we usually only report bad rather than good? When I walk my dog nearly all others I meet have some health issue. Should we have a good news section? |
Our baby is 16 weeks and two days and so far so good. He is going to be a teapot, maybe size has something to do with it? Idk this is our first yorkie :) |

As for serious health issues no. I think I had enough serious health issues with my babies that have gone to Rainbow Bridge. |
I can honestly say the only time I've had a serious health issue with Tuffy, it was my fault! Bella does have some stomach issues. I think you'll always find on a forum about specific breeds that more people will report about their "issues" because we all know this is the place for lots of answers. So, yea, it's sorta like media reports in that sense. |
My 3 yorkies have always been healthy. Buddy is a few health issues but as long as I give him is supplements daily he shows no signs. |
My Moka is perfectly healthy. She's going on 7 years old. I've only taken her to the vet other than a routine checkup or spay for a scratch to her eye she got from playing. She has yet to even need a dental cleaning. |
Healthy dogs :-)) Thank you for answering. The healthy dogs are out there. Yeh! My dog was very healthy until he had cataract surgery and after that there always seems to be some small transient issue with him, poor mite. (Nothing the Vet can find) I believe it was the long course of Prednisone that wrecked his immune system. Keep up the good work healthy dogs for your mommas! :-)) |
Other then an ear infection upset tummies occasionally and kennel cough ((which I believe the majority of these issues I could have prevented better) my two are now pretty healthy! |
Miss Priss has always been very healthy, she is a yorkie, now Yoshi my pekingese has allergies but are treatable if I am careful as to what he is fed. Blessed!!! |
Luma is very healthy, I feel blessed! She had some skin issues in the past, like scratching around her mouth and eyes and creating bloody sores that would get infected, ear infections, biting at herelf, tummy skin was always red...but using a probiotic, coconut oil and putting her on the right food has helped so much. She looks beautiful now and feels so much better! She never itches! Still has minor tear stains, but her immune system is good and strong. She had a checkup recently and everything looked great, even her teeth. Heres hoping our soon to be 2nd pup turns out as beautifully as Luma has :) |
My 3 have had health issues. Cali from a BYB had MVD, allergies and tummy issues. Pixie and Roxie from a good breeder have had some issues as well. Pixie had LP surgery. Roxie has just started with a regurgitation problem that we are trying to get under control. My last yorkie, Gracie from a show breeder died at 6 1/2 from complications of a collapsed trachea. So I have had some bad luck with yorkies but love them to death. After Gracie died I got talked into getting a pom by my husband and daughter. She was healthy until she got old and developed Cushing's. She was from a pet store but had a really bad temperament. So I went back to yorkies. I have to say the healthiest one I had was my first one Karma who was 16 lbs, floppy eared and couldn't grow coat. We fed our dogs back then (1970) Kennel ration and gaines burgers mixed with whatever my Mom was making for dinner. So I haven't had great luck with a completely healthy yorkie. |
Lexie is very healthy. Other than the occasional bout of diarrhea, she's had very few if any issues. She's almost 10 and does have stage 1 LP, but so far it hasn't been a problem at all. |
Most people just report and ask questions and stuff about the about the bad. Also a lot of us got our pups before knowing about this site and about good breeders and got our dogs from bad breeders, puppy mills and such. Mine came from a broker (which I new nothing about) that got there pups from a puppy mill and does have health problems. I am just glad she is mine because she is perfect to me and I know I will help her with her issues and make sure she is taken to the vet and loved even if shes got issues. |
Healthy Yorkie ? Yes, they they are out there. My Noah lived to be 19 and only had health problems the last year. Abba, Ginny Joy and Julia are very healthy. Gracie was a puppy mill puppy and she has had many health issues. Rubin who is ten has been healthy. Rubin does have to have dentals every year or two. Rubin comes from show champion parents and a good breeder. My Vet says the healthiest dog one can own is a, brown short coated, mixed breed of medium size, with short ears ! |
Clyde is not "perfectly" healthy, on account of the fact that he is seizure prone, but my little Dexter is one healthy little pup (almost 8 months old). The only time he ever has even acted sick was when he ate some Blue Buffalo dog food. Blue Buffalo is a great brand, but it didn't settle right with Dexter. I tried to transition him slowly, but his poor little tummy just wasn't having it. So he and Clyde are on Innova and they love it, and no more tummy issues! He did get a slight cough once, but it went away the next day. Aside from those two minor issues I have never had any trouble at all with Dexter, medically. |
My little Joey has been extremely healthy, but I really took the time to find a good breeder because I just didn't want another sickly dog. I was afraid to even get a purebred dog at all thinking that all breeders only bred for profit. When a dog becomes one of the top 10 most popular dogs in the country, and I think Yorkies are number two, you will find that people are breeding them purely for profit and have no real interest in the breed. They just want to breed something that's easy to sell. Unfortunately, breeders like this, do no health testing and breed their pets without knowing anything about their line or even if their dogs have a genetic illness that just hasn't shown up. Others breed them knowing full well their dogs have a serious case of LP. So many people think going to a quality breeder will be too expensive, but it actually a great investment. Joey has had two emergencies, one was vomiting when he was young about 5 months, and they think a spider bite him. Another was an eye ulceration when he was around a year old, I was growing out this forehead hair and vet thought he rubbed his face on carpet. Since then, (knock on wood) no problems. Joey is 6 1/2. |
Dog health I do thank you all for taking the time to share your experiences and to address my question. I was hesitant to post but glad I did. Before YT I had no idea of the various issues with Yorkies and the dangers of puppy mill and BYB dogs. There is so much experience shared here and I for one was so grateful to have answers to health and other questions. When I talk to other dog parents they seem to know nothing of breeders, good food, training etc - never having had the knowledge that YT imparts. They just learn by bitter experience. I was so devastated by the loss of my first baby at 11.5 to kidney failure, I looked everywhere including here to try and find if I could have prevented the horrible and sudden disease. I now know there was not much I could do. Nancy is so right, it is so hard to find a Yorkie that has a good chance of living a healthy and full life, and we can only do our best research and choose an experienced breeder. However, they are lovely dogs and we love them no matter what. Thanks again. |
The four of mine are very healthy except the two who suffer from fall allergies. And we had one that had a fatty tissue tumor. |
Other than getting stung by a bee and a 2 day vomiting event, Mandie has been very healthy. I count my blessing daily with her and pray that it continues because I really have no idea of her history - genetically. I agree with others, we see more bad/issues just because of the nature of the forum. Most of us find YT from google searching answers to a medical issue (even if it ends up being minor). I know many say they google answers and YT comes up time and time again. That's great!!! :D |
2 very healthy babies here!!! My Remy is 3 years old and Gigi is getting ready to turn 2 in May. Never a problem with health...so lucky. Do your homework when choosing a breeder!:):) |
Mine are 8 and no health problems in fact one of mine has never been to the vet except for routine checks and vaccinations |
I am happy to say that our Sophie is a very healthy and happy little girl who is full of energy. Every check up she has received a gold star from our vet whose comment about her was "you've got a quality dog here!" We are truly blessed! When I read about all the poor little sick ones my heart breaks for them and their people. I am glad so many have this forum to turn to for advice and support. :animal-pa :yorkietal |
Healthy dogs :-)) So happy to hear there are so many very healthy Yorkies around on YT. You are so blessed as are your well babies. |
Micah is the only one of mine that has ever had health issues all genetic, he has MVD, LP 1 and he had one testicles that was undescended...he came from a bad breeder in Germany..he was neutered at UT while being treated for the MVD, I am happy to say that he is four years old now and you wouldn't think that he ever had a bad day, he is a ball of Black & white energy :) I love my Biewer baby. My others are very happy and very healthy and never go to the vet except for routine cks & teeth cleaning. |
No issues here....ZoE is a very healthy two year old :) |
knock on wood at a little over 2 years of age Lola seems very healthy, however I keep waiting for the shoe to drop, not sure why, but perhaps it's all the sick and injured threads I read. Just for my peace of mind I have had complete blood work panels done on her 3 times so far, starting when i got her then at one year, then at 2 years, even my vet thinks I am crazy, I swear I am very tempted to ask for a full round of x rays and a complete body scan on our next visit, LOL I take better care of her than I do of myself. |
Bogie is 3 and has never had any health problems, he has only been for routing vet checks and other than an ear infection when we first adopted him and a lump on his back that was a slight infection he has no health issues at all. Jada has allergies and will itch and have loose stools and tummy issues if she eats something she is allergic to. She had a non cancerous tumor removed from her back last year and she has bad teeth. She has lost a total of 9 teeth so far and she is 6 years old. Bogie has yet to need a dental. Jada also has LP in both back knees. Overall though they are healthy. |

I do a bloodpanel on all my animals each year. 2 times a year on my senior dog. |
I have 4 Yorkies ages 2-4 and they have never been sick. They have their shots an annual exam every year. Very Blessed because I have also read about so many sick dogs here. |
Remy is healthy so far. I do know I will have to have lp surgery sometime, but that is ok I am prepared. I also have her teeth clean more often then my others because I am trying to be prevent her having major teeth issues latter on. I have blood work done to check on her health then. My other fur babies have some issues that are specific to their breed. My lasha has eye issues, my shih tzu has back issues, eye issues and skin allergies. With knowledge and care I hope to have them all healthy and to a ripe ole age!!! Yes, with more information and alternatives we have to take more responsiblity for our pet's health.. not like the old days when table scraps and a bed would do lol |
