My little 7mo old Chewy (profile pic) is a cotton coated chocolate baby. His hair is a nightmare to brush and wash? It is so thick and wavy. It takes forever to get his hair wet when we bath him, because it is sooo thick. My late Hugo was cotton coated as well, he had thick curly silky hair. I miss my little guy:aimeeyork

That they do and I think it helps keep their hair more manageable. Less tangles to have to deal with too.

After this last litter I honestly think that you can tell with pups are going to be a silky coat or a cotton coat. My daughter and I saw a noticeable difference in their coat even at a week old. I just never noticed it before cuz both of the parents (Miah & Quincy) had a silky coat.

We actually picked Winston because of his darker hair, my first Yorkie, Spencer also had a beautiful black coat, but his was softer than Winston's.
Is it possible to have half and half? I ask because of Winston's unruly back end...even in his avatar picture you can tell where it goes from smooth to fluffy.

If you think you have a way of knowing can you tell just by looking? Max is only 15 weeks and I'm dying to know! Lol

Haha! It takes for days to get Dexter's hair wet in the bath, too! The cotton coat hair is ridiculously hard to take care of, but I think it is worth it because of how cute it is :)

It is possible to have a combination coat, called a modified silk, and my 2 girls both have modified silk coats. Both have duller, fluffier, cottony back ends. I use a flea comb to strip out the cotton in the coat, leaving behind all the shiny, silky fur. Their hair mats less than cotton coats, but more than silk. It's also less shiny than a silk coat, but much shinier than a cotton coat.

Just from the photo alone I would say that your pup is a cotton coat.

The difference between the pups at this age (2 wks old) is the shine and texture factor. Four of the six are very shinny and have a thinner coat than the other two. The two that I believe to be cotton coats, the coat is thicker, less shinny and feels a bit stiffer.

(Call me nutz, but thats my opinion and I 'm stickin to it) :p

I do hope you are right. I didn't actually realize there was such a thing until I started questioning when he would "change" and I've said since we got him I wish he'd stay with this puppy coat... Any idea of what age I can stop waiting for it to turn?

Oh my gosh your 2 are cuter than heck...I may try your technique with the flea comb and see if I can rid Winston of his fluff butt. Thanks for the suggestion, my groomer may thank you too...

That is what I think Kyra's coat is also.

Absolutely, 100% yes, Kyra's coat is also a modified silk. It looks identical to my girls. I can compare because my Lucy had a pure cotton coat, so I do know the difference. Kyra, is adorable, by the way. It seems we both have teeny tinies.

As you brush Winston's hair (with the flea comb) you will actually be removing the cotton. The more you strip out, the shinier you will see his coat get. The silk that's left behind does not mat very easily. Although I brush them daily, I bathe the girls, and strip their coats once a week to keep them mat free. By the way, stripping doesn't hurt, unless you accidentally pull on a knot. It's just like regular combing. I'd really be interested to hear if it works for Winston, and I'll keep my fingers crossed that it does help tame that cute, fluffy, little butt.:)

I would describe Tucker as a cotton coat. His hair is super fluffy and it tangles easily. He looks like he never really lost his puppy coat. I love it! He is five in this picture. My others are too big to upload. I will try to post again later

I'm off work for the weekend and this will be on my to do list for sure, I'll let you know how it goes. I've tried so many different products on him, nothing really has seemed to help. I am so hopeful about this, my fingers are crossed too. Thanks again!

My little nut has a super soft coat and I believe that is why it is considered cotton like. She however is not dark at all. Just the opposite. She has a very light platinum blonde head and underneath, gold face and legs with a light silver blue saddle. Her coat tangles very easily and is a lot of work, but well worth it ~ she feels like "Egyptian cotton"! :D

The darkness usually is on the saddle. They're more black than the steel blue. Kaji's a little blondie too! Except for the sideburns and ears that refuse to shed the puppy darkness, even all these years later.

I still don't now what kind of coat he has..
When I brush him, his hair becomes soft and long but after a couple of minutes it curls back..

In the first and the second pic you can see his curly hair, in the third you can see his hair right after I brush him..

Scooter also has the soft coat. I'm always apologizing to his groomer for all the snarls in his coat. I brush him daily but it doesn't make any difference and his coat just knots right up. His groomer is so very nice about it and says not to worry it's just the way cotton coats are. He's Mr. Wiggle Butt when he gets groomed and cut but he always comes out just beautifully

I posted a pic of max a while ago... Here's an update... He's as scruffy as ever... Lol. I think the suggestions that he will turn out cotton coated are right!

Basically, I studied pictures of puppies from reputable breeders, and I studied pictures of puppies from.. well.. less than reputable breeders, lol. The exception usually being when the pet bred puppies were AKC registered, though some of them were cotton coats too.
Without exception, show breeders had puppies that looked like they had greasy fur, especially on their face, above their eyes.

I don't have great pictures to illustrate, but below are Pixie and Sabre at about the same age.
Sabre looks identical to my yorkie Bentley!!! I hope he has silky hair just because its easier to manage than the cotton coats but both are beautiful!! I have noticed that most reputable prefer silky coats but I have hear that they get the lighter silver colors from cotton type coats. :thumbup:
