YT 500 Club Member | bloodwork before spay? OK, so I set the date for zooey to be spayed. Oct. 8 will be the big day for spay, microchip, and teeth pulling. Zooey will be/7 months old. Now I asked the vet, do you do blood work before surgery and she said no. Is that normal procedure?

Donating YT 4000 Club Member | If my vet said no, I would say, but I want it done anyways, and I am paying for it, i had a complete blood panel done with all my dogs that get neutered or spayed. is not cheap but is worth every penny in my opinion.. hugs, |

| Not sure if its normal but I would never have my dog go into surgery with out having blood work first. My Aunts and Uncles dog was going in for her spay and they didn't know to get blood work done but I talked to them the day before so they told the vet they wanted it done and they found out she had a liver problem and could have had some complications if they just went ahead and did the spay with out the blood work.

| I would have it done. I am surprised that your vet didn't ask or maybe require blood work. Also to have it done isna good base line of information Good luck... I am sure it will be fine

| I agree, I would get bloodwork done prior to any procedures. Is there a particular reason why your vet is saying no? I would be wondering why she didn't think it necessary to do. Will she be having any dental work at the same time? A lot of times, this is done at the same time as spay or neuter so the animal doesn't have to go thru another procedure. I would try and talk with the vet and find out what her opinion is on this too. Good luck.

YT 500 Club Member | Its just something that's not standerd procedure, unless you want to pay extra! Being my pup was from a puppy mill, I think I'll do it. Plus she still has skin issues she's recovering from. Ugh, it never ends.......

| If it were me, I think I would make sure that my vet is well versed in the treatment of smaller dogs. I think I would be contacting another practice and finding out their protocol for yorkies and smaller dogs. My vet inisists on bloodwork prior to any procedures.

| I know that with my last dog, blood work was always done before any procedure. I personally wouldn't do surgery without it. I just would worry too much about the what if's, and I would rather pay more and know that there are no unknown potential complications. Good luck with your decision, and good luck with her spay and dental!!! |

| Blood work is suppose to make sure they are healthy enough for anesthesia. it can also let you know if something is wrong with kidneys or liver. Big dogs may not matter much. Small dogs are delicate. |

| My vet also offers the blood work as a paid for extra, and leaves it up to you to decide. I'm in the UK. |

If your vet doesn't understand the benefits of bloodwork prior to surgery, I'd look for a new vet, as she's not interested in doing all she can in the best interests of your pup.

| My vet always requires blood work before surgery. Sure it costs extra, but I will pay anything for my babies just to make sure they are safe.
