Teaching tricks I'm trying to teach Bentley how to shake. He's 15 weeks old now. It's not working so hot. He can sit, stay, heel, and is walking well on the leash. That's good! And I use lots of treats and praise. Any advice YT'ers?!? Thanks! |
Put him in a 'sit'. Put a treat in your fist (may have to show him the treat), put your fist in front of him, when he puts his paw on your fist to get the treat.... say 'Shake' then give the treat!:D |
That's really young, don't expect too much at first. They say you should train in short periods, and it's better to train 5 minutes at a time twice a day, then one long 10 minutes session, especially at that age. Training should always be fun. I took Joey to a tricks training class at Petsmart, and they basically teach you how to train your dog. It’s important to always use a verbal cue like “Yes” when they perform the wanted behavior. When I say “yes”, Joey knows he’ll get a treat. It’s similar to clicker training, but you use the word “yes” instead of the click. There are some really good instructions online, and I think they learn faster if you use hand singles with your verbal cues. It's important to not talk too much when you are training. Here's a good site: Dog Tricks! Shake, Crawl, Beg, Wave, Kiss, Roll Over, Take a Bow, and more! |
Thanks Nancy... forgot the 'Yes' part! I don't think I have quick time:( Edited version!:D Quote:

Do you have a doggy book to show you maybe some of the ways to teach tricks? My puppy class lead when Callie was a puppy was great and showing how to get the dog to do the tricks you wanted them too. I can not remember how she said to do it but I think it was to tickle the elbow/rub around the elbow and then they will lift there paw. |

Sounds great! You've got a great start and communication already. :) Funnily enough, Jackson took forever to learn shake. He could play dead before he learned to shake  Guess he's backwards.... I love trick training, so feel free to ask me any questions, I can try to help, but I learned the most from YouTuber zakgeorge21. kikopup, pamelamarxsen, tab289 are also GREAT tutorial vids. :) |
okay I'm not good at tricks my dogs sit stay and go to the toilet outside. So basically I'll give no advice but see if I can gather some |
I was trying to train my dogs one time and my cat walked up and 'sat' for a treat! Not saying I'm anywhere near even being a good trainer, just a very smart (or hungry) cat! LOL!:D |
Awwweee. He's very smart for learning all those tricks so young. I started with max young as well and I can't remember how old he was when he got "shake" but it did take some time and prompting, etc. When he was a bit younger (aboout 5-6 months) he would start doing all his tricks (sit, shake, roll over) without my command as soon as I got the treats out.:D If your dog is treat driven then he will get it with several training sessions. Good luck! Post a video when he gets it if you can. :) |
