procedure Skippy will be getting his teeth cleaned and his nails trimed tomorrow am-sometime between 10-12. I am supposed to keep him --no food after noon today and NPO after midnight. WHY no food after noon when the procedure isn't until at least 10am? I couldn't get him to eat yet today and now he will be without food all:confused: day. |
im sorry i dont have an answer but wanted to wish skippy good luck tomorrow. |
Huh...that seems like a long time to be without food. When Toki got spayed, she wasn't allowed to eat after midnight the night before but water was okay...she wasn't strictly NPO. Good luck tomorrow with Skippy's procedures...He's going to be so happy to see you when you pick him up! |
thanks for the good thoughts; he's begging right now. So reluctant since I don't know why. Even humans can eat up until midnight night before :( |
I know with mine it's no food after midnight and water us ok until 7 am. So not sure why vet said that. That sure is a long time to go without food. |
I'd call the vet back and ask why, explaing how long he's going to be without food. I know feral dogs and all go days without eating and even water but he's not feral or wild. See if he can't have something up until midnight. I've never had to have any dog of mine be NPO that long and I'vd had dogs having procedures for years. Seems like you could soak some kibble in lots of water and at least let him drink the juice part, the soupy part but ask the vet! |
Call them back I get to give Elvis nutrical and liquids. He's bever had a blood sugar issue with me but my cet is very serious about small more frequent feedings for yorkies. It really does make a huge difference IMHO to jave a small breed specialty vet for especially yorkies. We're just told to brush well if he cheats and does eat. Also here vets dont put dogs under for dentals...that may be a huge prt of the no food but I see why nutrical wouldnt be okay or suggested for that matter. |
That is really early. Generally thy are allowed dinner the night before. It does have to do with nausea from anesthesia and inhaling vomit. You can call and ask. If this is not a young pup and if hypo has never been an issue then he should be just fine without. that is a little long for my liking though. |
He can aspirate any stomach contents and anything that thickens the aspirate tends to bother the lungs all the more but surely the long hours after midnight and until the procedure will be enough to digest all his stomach contents if he eats a bit of something tonight. I'd put a call into my vet tonight. |
Dogs digest their food very quickly so I don't understand why no food for so long:confused: And no water either? Being dehydrated isn't good either:( I hope you called the vet and got some clarification on this. |
That seems like an excessive amount of time. When I took Gracie to have her spayed it was no food after 8pm and no water after midnight. Her surgery was at 10:00am. Maybe you could call and see if someone made a mistake? |
