summer My Yorkie gets overheated quickly, she has been playing outside with my mom's poodles since it has been warm out and they are fine, but Daisy is panting, her skin is hot, and she is looking at me like...help me! Is it common for a Yorkie to not handle the heat? |
mine have always seemed to have felt the heat, Lola especially so. Thankfully she likes the water, so at home we go for a dip in the lake. But even tonight she was inside in the air and panting hard after a rousing game of fetch and keep away. I took an ice cube and ran it under some warm water, I rubbed it on her neck and down her back and let her lick it, and soon she was no longer panting heavily. If it is warm before we head out for a walk, I take some water in my hand and put some on her neck, belly and back. We boat and often when we are not moving, I dip her over the side and wet her paws and tummy then drip some over her back. Keeping her wet really helps and you can tell because she perks right up. My last one did not like the water but I still wet him down in the heat because it was for his own good. On thing I do not do is use freezing cold water and give her a big douse at once, that would probably make them afraid. |
Get her a kiddie pool. Mine love it. I don't let them out to play in the yard we are waiting to get our fence. They do go for long walks. They wear harness vest which makes them really warm or I sit on the patio with them. There hair absorbs heat in my opinion so they over heat easily. They love the kiddy pool. I also have a portable water bowel that I take on walks and when we go on car rides so they can get water when needed |
YorkieMommie I've got a kiddie pool and plan on using it, it's a teeny wee blow up one I hope it survived wee nails, if not I'll figure out some form of paddling pool for them. Often out on walks on hot days I fill one container with icewater and another with icecubes, I carry a portable dish and also pour water on the back of the head and neck to cool them down. |
You can a tiny hard plastic one at Walmart for under 20$. Face it they don't need much space. When they are done I dump the water and dry it out and pack it in the garage till next time. We have had it for about 3 years. I have put the baby in yet. She still hates baths. I also wipe it down with bleach wipes about an hour before they get in |
