Default We went for a walk! A very short walk!

One day I took Peek a Boo and my GSD (now departed) for a walk. I heard barking when we started past the neighbor's houseand looked over to the neibor's house, when I saw their Pitbull push out the upstairs screen and jump out the window, touch off on the little roof overtop their front door and land in a dead run on the sidewalk, running straight at us.

My dogs didn't see her coming, Thank God I did... OMG what to do... what to do??? OMG! I saw a bush 2 feet away....I ushered them both behind a large bush blocking them from her and their sight of her, trying to stay calm and not alert them to the panic racing through my entire body. I looked back to see where the dog was... she had made it half way to us.... still flat out running straight towards us....

With my heart and stomach in my throat, I stepped out to the ends of their leads and told them 'Stay' (like they were going to be suddenly obedience trained, lol), and waited, thinking what could I do? What could I do to stop this dog? Mental images of a horrible dog fight raced through my brain...

I had one chance to stop her and I swore she'd have to get through me to get to my babies! I guess I could try a command... but what is the best word to use??? Stop, Heal, Go Home, No, no... trying to recall hearing any commands my neighbors had used with her while out in the yard...my mind was racing and I couldn't focus...Is this going to work? I looked back one last time at my two... sitting there with their innocent faces, so unaware of the oncoming danger... then looked back at the PitBull, 12, 10, 8 feet away and closing fast. I planted my feet for the impact and waited till the Pitty was about 4 feet away, and I prayed "Please God make this work!" and then I screamed 'STOP!!! in the deepest, loudest, voice I could muster.

The Pitty stopped dead in her tracks, looked at me like 'What???', then promptly turned around and jogged back up the front yard and sat down on the porch. I quickly got my wits about me and got my two outta there. I was shaking so bad I could barely walk, my knees were like rubber and couldn't barely talk for 3 days.

Funny though, I thought we were safe because she was upstairs...

Wow, great reactions on your part!

Did you follow up with talking to the neighbor about it?

Thank goodness you protected your dogs. Wow.

I was in a somewhat similar situation. I reacted my scooping Tatiana in one arm (she's small -- about 3 lbs). I faced the upcoming dog. I was prepared TO FIGHT that dog to the death to protect Tatiana. I was UNAFRAID. I stood my ground, and stared hard at the dog running towards us. As I said, I was ready to fight. I said nothing, but the dog sensed my mindset. It stopped about 3 feet from us, and looked at me. Then it turn around, and ran back where it came from!

Good momma! Saved your babies & stood down a Pitbull! I'd say that's a good day's work.

After my Jilly was attacked by a Dalmatian, I began to carry a big black self-opening umbrella with us on walks. Even the fiercest-acting dog backs down once that big black thing whomps open & spreads out before them, though my knees always tend to fold just a little anyway!

Good for you. Pit bill deserves a reward for obedience also.

This wasn't the first time, but maybe the worst... I have talked to these neighbors till I'm blue in the face about the leash laws here... he already had to have his first PB euthanized (court ordered) when it endangered a child trying to attack another neighbor's Rottie. I guess some folks just don't learn.

I'd like to take credit, lol, but I was so freaked out seeing her come out of the 2nd story window, I think I went into shock, and then everything happened in slow motion. I've had the slow motion thing happen a few times before this, but only when I was sure I was going to die.

I had thought about picking up my Yorkie, but I thought maybe the PB hadn't seen him and was coming for me or my GSD. Then I had visions of the PB tearing into my GSD, and me standing there helpless holding my Yorkie. I think too if my dogs had been reacting, and normally they would have been, I probably would have picked him up...

Sadly, until all my neighbors get their dogs under control and I feel safe in my own neighborhood, I have since made the decision to walk only one dog at a time, so I can better protect us should a situation present itself.

Yeah, I'm glad the PB stopped, although I'm not exactly sure why. I think obedience should also begin in the home, teaching the dog respect for boundaries such as closed doors and windows, lol!

Many people who live in neighborhoods with Pitbulls who've escaped their yards now carry knives or tasers on walks and not just umbrellas or tennis rackets. It's one thing to get attacked by a Lab, GSD or a Rottie, but not nearly as many of them will pursue an attack as long or until death like a Pitbull will. My son, who recently worked for over a year exclusively rehabilitating aggressive & troubled Pitbulls would tell you that they are one of the most wonderful, loving & loyal breeds of dogs there is but that they, moreso than any other large, powerful breed, can turn extremely vicious & attack in the blink of an eye. And with their bulldog lineage, they aggressively sustain attacks, as the original bulldog was bred to do. With this recent incident & the history with that other Pit, you might consider taking along something to help save you & your dogs' lives in the event of another incident that escalates. With that neighbor's Pit & the possibility that it, the euthanized one as well as many other Pitbulls actually have bred-for-fighting dogs several times in their bloodlines, the tendency for vicious aggression, however latent now, has to be at least considered when you & your dog could face one any time you are outside. I think you are very wise to only walk one dog at a time but I believe I would carry along an umbrella or some tool with which to fend off an actual attack. Not to scare you but next time, as you know, the Pit might not stop on command.

I'm always suggesting that people at least teach their dogs (even the little ones) the basic obedience commands. They can save a life and all in all make for a better balanced relationship with your pet. It's such a good thing your dogs knew what to do when it came down to a serious situation!

People cannot get homeowner's insurance if they own a pitbull where I live. It is really unfair to responsible owners because the breed at it's best is a wonderful loyal and loving companion. It's a shame that another innocent breed is being exploited by fools.

It is so true. I fell totally in love with a Pit I knew for a short time. My son, who has worked with some truly bad ones, loves them. I used to think they were ugly but once you ever love one, you get to see the beauty of the animal. They used to even be called "nanny" dogs because they were so good & gentle with children before greeders, gang members & druggie's & other's out to make thousands with their fighting dogs took over & infused the breed with aggressive genes. Some of those Pitbull breeder websites make me physically sick to my stomach to see what they brag about! Or to read some of the tweets that gangsta rappers post about them!!! Truly disgusting humans have ruined a wonderful breed of dog unless there are some true lines left out there bred for temperament, health & conformation to some standard. Have you seen the site where they used to have 120 lb. Pits for stud? Imagine an 120 lb. Pitbull!!! On the other hand, there was "Daddy", that wonderful dog Cesar Millan got from that rapper. My son's dog, Tex, an American Bulldog weighing in at 90 lb., has been trained so well that he reminds me of Daddy. Tex is a Dog Whisperer all by himself. He is wonderful around other dogs. Danny brings really troubled dogs home all the time & Tex is so good with them.
