Eye wash ? Which eye wash do you all use between baths to clean out the eye "boogers"? :) |
I use a lot of baby products on Max (because its the most sensative), so for his eyes I use baywipes (the nonsented ones). |
I bought some Hartz doggie wipes that seem very "soapy" to me & then I got a smaller size package of a brand from Petsmart, Puppy Wipes by top paw, & it says gentle & tearless. It says to avoid eyes. :confuse2: So, what is the purpose of calling it "tearless"? |
The best thing I ever used and still use every day is just sterile saline solution for cleaning contact lenes. You can buy a big generic bottle at any pharmacy. It is cheap and safe. |

Idk, I've never used puppy wipes on Max (thanks for telling me about them) I always use baby wipes, for humans, to remove his eye boogers. I know those are tearless because I tested them out before i used them on Max. |
I use a baby product called "Boogey Wipes"-the unscented normal saline ones, |

My Female Becca had an Eye injury when she was just a few weeks old. The Ophthalmologist gave me a wash/lube called GenTeal, which actually is for human use, to keep her eye moist while healing. She's ok now, but, I found that it was a good way to soften the accumulation of discharge, and have used it, with a QueTip or a soft Face Towel, to remove the debris. I know there are things which may be cheaper, but, I've had good results with this, and know it's "intended" for use in the eye. |
I don't use anything, lol. He doesn't get very many, depending on the food he's on, so I just pick them out with my finger. Is that gross? LOL. Oh, wanna hear something more gross.... he likes to eat them. lol. Yup. We're disgusting ;) |

Katie Scarlett has a teeny tiny eye boogie every morning. We have a flea comb that we use. I hold her face very still and slowly brush around her face. She knows to be still I think because she lets me get the boogie out with the brush. I think it feels better to her to have them out. I always brush super super slow and downward making sure I avoid her eye...wouldn't want to poke her eye. She usually closes her eye the I'm near too. Then we give her a bath every week and wash her face with a damp sponge. Her face seems to stay pretty clean. I have used the puppy wipe to wipe her face off before, but never around her eyes. I was afraid it might irritate them. We also let her drink that 'nursery water' from the baby section at Wal Mart. I had read somewhere on here how it helps with those eye boogies. I think it helps her because she only has a teeny tiny one every day. |
Good idea on that saline solution! I may switch to that since both the hubby and I wear contact lenses. |
Well, I finally found the eye boogie wet wipes at Target today. LOL :D (I looked at Walmart before but couldn't find them.) I got a package & we will try them. I just thought it would be convenient to have a wipe with solution all in one. However, I am sure it is less expensive to go with the plain saline bottled solution. I have a plastic mustache comb that I use under & around her eyes & she is pretty good about that. I also bathe her weekly too. I am using distilled water for her as my other two senior Shih Tzu need to drink that & she chooses to drink out of "their" bowl (gotta be like the "big dogs" ya know? LOL) but she does drink her water too. I was using the nursery water but that is when I first noticed her "boogies" developing. (Probably just coincident-more related to her maturing I imagine.) Thank you so much everyone for the great suggestions! We appreciate it. :) |
For eye boogers, eye wash is not necessary, nor would it be effective or advisable. There are many potential causes for eye drainage. Pinpointing the cause is the only way to determine the solution. I used to believe in using sterile saline solution for the eyes when necessary (i.e. a foreign body in the eye). After Max had corneal ulcers, I decided the preservative in the saline was irritating his eyes. Plus, the solution does not remain sterile once the bottle is open. I use plain water now. Room temperature. |
Mina's eyes and face get washed every morning when my face gets washed. I use the other end of the washcloth and just plain warm water. Sense I started using the filtered water out of the frig despenser she doesn't have many boogies each morning and my red poodle doesn't have any, anymore. |
