Weight problems and depression My Bentley has put on weight. He hasn't been weighed lately but I can tell. He has had a recent checkup at the vet and was dewormed. So he is healthy. He seems quite sad at times lately too. In a recent post I said he has gotten irritable. We just moved back to CA as hubby was on deployment and he has been gone a lot on and off since. So it has been mainly me taking care of the house, our 2 babies, and our furkids. I think that I haven't been giving Bentley enough attention. Could this be the reason for the weight gain and depression and irritability? I've decided to take an hour walk starting tomorrow morning with the babies and just Bentley. I'm hoping this helps as he loved his walks and I haven't had much time for them the last few weeks. He is eating 1/4 cup of Wellness a day. Should I lessen it or see if the walks and extra attention help? I worry about his knees and certainly don't want any extra weight to cause problems later. I'm angry at myself for not managing my time better the last few weeks. My pets are like my babies and I never want them to feel the least bit sad. Hoping the long walk everyday helps. Any other advice is more than welcome. :( |
Poor little guy :(. What about any other symptoms, even random ones? I seriously doubt it's this, but I'm linking you to info about Cushings...the only reason I mention it is bc weight gain (pot belly), and lethargy can be symptoms...and Cushings often goes undiagnosed. There are a whole bunch of other symptoms too, so maybe just give it a look (symptom list is about 1/3rd down the page): Cushings The irritability he has makes me wonder about pain somewhere too. Is he still playing with his toys? |
He still plays with our doxie and with us occasionally. But he would much rather be cuddled up on one of our laps. He has luxating patella in both knees but they haven't bothered him too much so far. Ill read on the cushings. I'm getting a little worried now that it could be something serious and not just a need for more attention. :( |
He def does not have a pot belly. However, he has a few of those symptoms. But that could be anything or nothing. We went for a long long walk. Just him and my kids. W/o our other dogs. He really enjoyed it and is taking a nap now. He seems happier. I plan to do this everyday. When I say weight gain, I mean very slight weight gain. Not noticable to anyone except me bc I'm so paranoid with him. The walk helped. Praying he's okay. Like I said, I'm getting really worried now. If the walks don't help within a week or so, off to the vet we go to talk about cushings. :( Thanks for the information although I hope and pray that isn't what is going on. I was unaware that all 3 breeds I have are on the list of who gets it most. Boxer, doxie, yorkie. Thanks again. |
Is he perhaps missing your husband? Sometimes animals miss their masters and that can cause them to do odd things. |
Its a possibility. He has grown very close to him in the last few weeks oddly. I used to be the favorite. Now he cuddles with DH all day. I'm so used to being the one they miss when I'M gone so that is a def possibility bc I've never had one that missed anyone but me. DH will b home next week so we will see if that lifts him back up. |
