Chinchillas are the most docile pet, we wiped them out in the wild using them for fur... http://www.google.com/search?q=chinc...2&ved=0CC8QsAQ |

I see it on my facebook page hope people boycott them. |
Boycotting could help the animals in their care. They need a HUGE wake-up call and new policies. Supposedly, the employees wanted to take the animals home but it was against company policy and they could not. It makes me very sad - animals are just another commodity for them to sell. It's not really a big decision for me - the two pet stores closest to me are Pet Smart and a small, designer store. Neither have animals to sell. I'm glad. |
The manager should face charges! |
While the manager claims to have been 'following policy' he/she had a huge opportunity to develop goodwill in the community by doing the right thing and evacuating the animals. After, IF he/she was to face a reprimand for not following policy it would create an uproar in the media and Petco would back down FOR SURE! This way there is an uproar in the media/community and the animals lives have been lost. That's too little too late IMHO. Shame on Petco and the manager for not taking the extenuating circumstances into account. |
Petco Boycott Poll - have you Voted ? It seems like Petco has a Dog Forum ! And, someone  has started a Poll there, asking people if they have or will Boycott Petco for their Inhumane Actions. Seemed like the right thing to do  You might like to give you opinion on that, at... http://community.petco.com/discussions/Dog_Discussion_Forum/fd03p00v01d1?CoreCat=MM_DogSupplies_Community&redi rCnt=1&nav=messages |
I don't understand how you could work there and not have thought to go rescue the animals. I personally wouldn't have cared if I lost my job. I'd be breaking in to save them. :( I <3 Chinchillas. Such a cool little pet. |
i voted and forwarded to family and friends |
Ours carries all types of animals. They always have cats there up for adoption and many others like, ferrets, hamsters, chinchilas, etc. I can't even imagine those poor animals suffering, scared, and alone...makes me cry! |

Thank you for the info I just went online and posted my anger. |
Lil Sis, HA, I just knew you'd be one of the first ones over there :D cheryl, I could have created the Poll here, but... I wanted to shove it in their face TOTALLY ! |
Ugh, I grew up in Binghamton and my parents still live there, and this has caused quite a stir in the community, as it should. Residents had plenty of time to evacuate - this isn't the first time the area has been affected by flooding, so Petco should have had a plan in place. I wonder how long this Petco location will survive considering how angry people are - it is fairly new anyway, and Petsmart has been in the area for much longer. Disgusting. |
As many of you can tell by now, I'm not just disgusted Whit this, I'm outraged ! I worked in Health Care for over thirty years, and I know how difficult it is, to make that call, to tell an employee, to step away from his family and home, and fulfill a responsibility to and for others. But, let's look a little deeper into this... Here's an expert from an article I read concerning their actions which was written by Marcie Whichard, a Petco V.P... "On Thursday morning, employees arrived to work and were "shocked at the enormity of the situation," Whichard wrote. "They immediately tried to enter the building to evacuate the animals but were turned away by the authorities due to concerns for human safety," she wrote. "At the time, the city was focused on rescuing people from their homes by boat and could not divert resources to our store until Friday." Full Article at... PETCO discovery: Close to 100 animals lost in flood | Press & Sun-Bulletin | pressconnects.com SO... just who knew it was dangerous (if it even was) ? What "Authorities" ? Police, Fire, Health ? Just who made that decision to keep "someone" from at least checking ? And, just what qualified them to be in that "dangerous" area, and not someone else. I'm not sure just how dangerous it is, for someone to walk through water with Waders on. and not someone else. So, what I'm reading in this, is that not ONE single Agency was willing to allow JUST ONE of their personnel, to respond. As I said in a previous post, kick the door in, and just simply sit the cages up on a counter. Now how dangerous would it be to walk through FOUR FEET of water ? I just made a Post on the PetCo Website, maybe you'd like to as well, at.. Johnson City Update from Petco CEO, Jim Myers | The PETCO Scoop Blog PS: My Post was number 1272 by the way. |
This has made the national media so IM sure Petco has made some changes because of the bad publicity. I didnt like it because I go in there to buy a fish and I get the 3rd degree of scrutiny then they do this. I wont shop there anymore anyway unless I really have to. I buy alot of pet supplies so its their loss |
Posted this link to them. As I said until they stop cruelly confining, improperly feeding, forcing nocturnal animals (chinchillas) in totally clear Plexiglas and see through plastic igloos in daylight/florescent lighting I boycott ALL Petcos already... |
I posted on their headquarters web site as how I will never buy from them and told how everyone is posting on facebook and dog sites to boycott Petco. |

Correction please Thank you for your post. I believe it was Pet Depot in Vestal that evacuated their animals not "PetSmart" which is a company also owned by PetCo. Thank you - Evie |
Greetings Evie welcome to the Forum :welcome4: FYI - ALL: If you wish to return to the Petco Website at... http://www.petcoscoop.com/2011/09/johnson-city-petco-flooding/ to view (your) other Post, you may not see your post listed. Just find the "Sort" Cell, and select "Sort by Newest", and that should rearrange the order where you can find your/subsequent post better. CGurl, Great idea, thanks for the link back here to us ! |
I LOVE sending YT links out to show people, and companies about not only YT but that there are LARGE forums out there with like minded proactive people whom share interests, and information...that affect the oh mighty dollar. Quote:

I've herd/read... Nobody told us the store was going to flood. (Employees) We would have helped, but they said everything was ok. (Fire Dept) Disaster Plan not used or nonresistant. (CEO) No followup on rising water. (other First Responders) No action or followup by Store Manager. (Employees) No objection by Subordinates. (Associates) Prevention of intervention. (Local Police) then... We're going to give $25K to Local Shelters. (CEO) We're not going to fire anyone, and pay them. (CEO) *Have Psychological Counseling available for Employees. (CEO) Now... Of all the passing the buck, and subsequent shallow attempts to compensate for errors, it's possible that one *thing may be of value, at least to some. If we can assume, that the Employees of that Store, had any real interest in or love for animals, beyond just having a job, I can barely imagine the remorse they may be experiencing now. I really feel sorry for them. |
I will never shop at PetCo again. I don't really care if it's the specific store, or the company. As people have said, national should have an explicit humane policy in place for just these types of situations. I was in NYC and pretty much everything closed down in preparation. Every vendor took losses. |
hmmm does Petco insure their product in their event of natural disaster:floods maybe? Wow, cost os saving, upkeep & hopeful sale or guaranteed insurance check...just askin'...anyone else curious? I'm thinking it seems an inadvertent insurance scam to NOT have an evacuation of living animals policy...or good CEO 'business' thinking |
(hmmm does Petco insure their product in their event of natural disaster:) I heard that was the comment when this first started. The store said it was not worth removing the animals as the insurance would cover it the same as a sack of dog bones. (my words not theirs) It is all product to them and they are now trying to cover all the first statements with damage control. My son sent me a statement that a lawyer put up that if the folks would get together he would offer his services free of charge to go after everyone involved for animal cruelty and neglect ect. I live in tornado ally (Alabama) and this year was hit by one in April, but I refuse to go to a storm shelter because my two furbabies are not allowed in these shelters even if they both fit in a single crate, so I WILL NOT leave them behind. I can not even imagine being safe and not knowing how they are doing. They depend on me for their care the same as my children did when they were at home. And if you have pets in your care you need to be responsible for them and if you are making a profit from them you are doubly responsible to prevent any harm to them. This are living breathing creatures that love and have emotions such as fear and joy. If those animals had even been let loose they would have had enough sense to seek higher ground themselves. I am not saying they should have been let loose but that they knew they were drowning. If there was time to move precious paper work to safety and to shut down early than there was time to remove all animals. Rent a Uhaul truck load them and get to higher ground. Yeah that store was dry for 6 to 8 hours before any water hit and the whole area knew it was coming. |
Isn't that the most horrific part? Had the animals not been trapped in cages, left to slowly drown, they'd have saved themselves... |

When hurricane Irene went through here, officials in NY emphasized that people could bring their animals to shelters, though they asked that they be muzzled, etc. Hopefully this is the start of a trend. I sent an email to PetCo stating I would no longer buy their products. I got the following response back. (not sure why most of the spaces disappeared). ================= Thank you for notifying usof your concern. I apologize for the delay in response. Please know that we areaware of the situation in Johnson City and our entire company is deeplysaddened by it. We areactively working to understand all the details surrounding the situation andwe’re committed to learning how to ensure that this type of situation neveroccurs again. We are heartbroken that even a single pet was lost, but itis important to know that we do not carry or sell dogs or cats, so none were inthe store at the time of the flood. Weare animal lovers, too, and as a company, we make our best efforts to evacuateanimals from stores which we know are in harm’s way, and in fact a number ofstores were under evacuation in the region. We have rescued thousands ofanimals from harm’s way during floods, fires, hurricanes and otherdisasters. Please know that we care about our customers andwhat they think of us. By letting us know when we fall short of yourexpectations, we have the opportunity to address your concerns and to be betterprepared to meet your expectations in the future. Thank you again forcontacting PETCO. |
