Senior Yorkie Talker | coat type, coloring, and difference between silk terriers and yorkies What exactly is the correct coloring for yorkies? I have seen so many light silver ones with thin silky hair and have always thought that to be correct but I think I have been wrong. I know the correct color is "steel blue" but I'm not sure what that looks like as I always see silver yorkies. Bentley is a dark grey color. Or salt and pepper. He is 15 months old now. Is the silky of a silky terrier different from that of a yorkie? Sometimes I think he is cotton coated but he grows so slow, never mats, and is very shiny. I always thought he must be cotton bc of his coloring. Bc he isn't the light silver color. I'm wondering is the ones I have seen have been part silky terriers bc of their size and coat. Are silky terriers silkier feeling? I'm just very curious. And do you think Bentley has cotton or silky hair? I'm going to attach a picture and in it his eyes seem to shine gold which confuses me also. He just woke up in his picture and his hair isn't in his usual pony so he looks a bit disheveled. |

| Oh, he's not cottony coat and I know cottony coat as on my dear sweet Sophie!! She mats, not real shiney but super soft. Color on Yorkies I think is the biggest variable. We have a total of 5 Yorkies in our family and I think only 1 would meet the standard of color(the one on the left on my avatar) but I think her coat is too wavey. We have 2 that look like platinum blondes (one on the far right)with dark roots (as in needing a touch up badly)and 1 of which has really curly hair. As the fur grows it goes from dark to silver. Quite a mixture of colors & textures. |

| Bently has a beautiful silky coat. The coat and color can go through changes for 2 years, so he may not be done yet. Here is a sticky from the YT Library with lots of info about color and coats: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/pup...rt-thread.html

| Silky Terriers and Yorkies have same type of fur, but the silky terrier has lighter coloring most often and yorkies a bit darker. This is how a yorkie should be colored: http://swedetops.is/myndir/rakkar/aettbok/thomas2.jpg http://swedetops.is/myndir/MinRaektu...areDevil-e.jpg This color is right too but the golden color is a little too much tan colored, should be a little lighter. http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-HR7NBh5VvI...re_Terrier.jpg This is how a Silky Terrier is colored: http://www.brit-petfood.com/data/ima...b3f4d2c377.jpg Many silkys are to dark though but this is the right color, but in shows the color isnt as important as the yorkies, the silkys are allowed a bit darked but judges prefer this color.

| Read the Yorkshire Terrier standard then you will see what is the right coloring of a yorkie and where each color should be ! Yorkies should only be in 1 color but many people breed both darker and lighter colored yorkies but then they are propably not shown and are in the wrong color. Fido my Yorkie pup on the avatar is for example with color out of standard. Many yorkies are 2-3 years to take out their adult color, try going through the coat and see if the root is in another color. The color turns silver before it turns golden. The true yorkie color is dark steel blue and golden ! American Kennel Club - Yorkshire Terrier
