Is it safe for a pregnant dog to fly ? My friends yorkie is pregnant . She is leaving to the Dominican republic on august 5th . The dog will be exactly 60 days pregnant when they come back on the 25th of august . I keep advising her it can be very dangerous for her to fly with her yorkie but she thinks she will be fine . Advice ! What should I tell her ?!?! |
I'm not sure about dogs...but I do know its not safe to travel at all in the last trimester of human pregnancy...so I would think it would be the same for a dog...What if her Bitch goes into labor and whelps, while she is in the Dominican republic, she won't be able to travel home for many weeks if that happens or if she goes into labor on the flight home..Flying with any pet is very stressful on them...the flight to the Dominican republic could cause her to go into premature labor and loss all the pups...A Bitch could go into labor and whelp puppies anytime after day 58....way to risky!! |
I would tell your friend to leave her bitch with a breeder she trust or board her at the Vets or cancel vacation all together for the safety of her bitch and pups, better yet!...Why did she even breed her if she knew she would be on vacation at whelping time? Thats was very irresponsible of her IMO. |
Why would someone go on vacation when they had a pregnant bitch at home? and then to want to take the dog with you?! This is why most people shouldn't breed- it requires sacrifice. |

Amen to that. Gotta love stupidity. |

What would your friend do if the dog were to go in to distress mid flight? Why would someone think it's ok to put a pregnant dog on a flight, no matter how far off the whelp date is? Traveling, even under the best of circumstances, is stressful on a pet. |

The slams weren't at you. They were towards your friend. I give you credit for want to talk with her. I would just take her dog and not give it back, but I'm abrasive and can be a bit of an @$$ sometimes. ;) Try talking to her again, if you can maybe get ahold of the vet thae cares for her dog and see if they can maybe give her a call as well. |
It doesnt take alot of brains to know its best not to stress a dog at the end of their pregnancy and flying would stress her not to mention all the things that could go wrong if she went into labor, She sounds like some kinda breeder |

I thought a vet had to fill out a health certificate in order for a dog to fly. Am I wrong? (I've never flown a dog before). If so, it would seem that she would have a difficult time getting a vet to sign off on that. |

Can you take her dog in when she goes on vacation? |

Wouldn't take my dogs to the Dominican anyway-I went there for a midwifery trip and it's not all glitz and glamour! Besides, my dogs are English (Yorkshire). They don't speak Spanish or French or Patois. (Haitian dialect). :-) |

#1. Doesn't your friend have a vet to ask this question too? She does have a pregnant dog which should be seen by her vet #2. The above mentioned vet would need to clear this dog for a flight which I doubt would happen. #3. Does the woman have no sense whatsoever? #4. What happens when she arrive in the Dominican Republic and the bitch wouldn't be allowed back on the plan with puppies. So then what? She will be stuck there until....... |

Certificates must be issued no more than 3 days before the flight, and are good for 30 days after it was issued. So let's say I'm leaving this Friday out of the country. The soonest I can get a certificate is today, and the latest Thursday. Then I have 30 days from the date it was issued to get me and my dog back into the US. Unless the rules changed in the last 2 months, that's what they are. |

All three pretty much say a dog traveling to the Dominican Republic must be seen by 2 vets. |

What I see, is your friend being told its unsafe for her pregnant bitch to travel Your friend blowing all that advice off, and saying she will be ok..I'm taking her anyways I see that, as being selfish, greedy...and not caring about her bitch or the pups at all, just to go on a vacation...She coudl lose them all. |
