my 4 week old yorkie puppy cant support her weight on her back legs My 4 week old yorkie puppy has very little use of her back legs, she can move them and try's to walk, but she cant support her weight, they are also very slightly turned inwards, I have been trying the bend and stretch therapy on her the last few days, and although I have seen a slight improvement, she still cant walk, she falls over regularly as she cant keep her balance with these back legs, to me it looks like her hips aren't correct, got the vet tonight with her just wondered if anyone had any suggestions, don't want to put her down, want to give her a chance. |
My first suggestion would be take her to a vet so she can be checked out. Secondly, why do you have a 4 week old yorkie? Did you adopt this puppy this young, or did your dog have puppies? I dont mean this in an ugly way, just curious. |
Hi and welcome to YT, I'm sorry it has to be under these circumstances. I don't know what is going on with your pup but did think of "swimmer's legs". There have been a few threads here on YT discussing pups with this condition. She definitely needs to be evaluated by a vet. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/bre...hind-legs.html http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...pper-legs.html |
We had a dog do that once before, and it turned out to simply be one tick on the dog. The only way to find out for certain what is wrong with your dog is to take it to the vet. I will keep your puppy in my prayers. |
I'm assuming that since the puppy is only 4 weeks old she is still with the momma and you are the breeder. What has your vet said about her legs? If she hasn't been seen already you need to take her in to be evaluated. |
Im really curious to see what the vet says...but If she is healthy otherwise, please dont put her down!! Im sure even if she cant use her back legs, theres a special person out there to love her forever!! |

Took her to the vet tonight, and after an xray, and a check the vet decided there is no paralasis, and no hip displacement, he reckons its the way she has been in moms womb, her legs have been crushed, because she has plenty of power in her back legs, he has suggested another two weeks of intensive physio 3 times a day with the stretch and bed therapy, he reckons there is no reason why she shouldn't walk, although she may have slightly bandy legs, he reckons also because she is the runt of the litter, she will just take that bit longer, I have to take her back in two weeks time to be re-evaluated. She is one of a litter of 5 , and is still with mom, this is my first time breeding, and also my last, alll the other pups are doing great. Thanks for your reply. vicki |
Just to keep everyone informed, had my four week old yorkie puppy at the vet tonight, who gave her an x ray, said there was no hip displacement, and she has lots of power in her hind legs so no paralasis, he reckons her legs have been crushed while in moms womb, as her mom was quite small and had a litter of five, from which she is the runt, he reckons with a couple of weeks of intensive physio 3 times a day, she should come good, although she may be slightly bandy legged, he said as she has so much power in her back legs there is no reason why she shouldn't walk, its just a case of building the muscle in the back legs to let her support herself. I have to take her back in 2 weeks time to be re-evaluated. This is my first time as a breeder, and it will be my last, it has been heart breaking watching the little one struggle, but the vet has given me hope now, so with a bit of luck she will soon be walking. Thanks for all the kind words from everyone. Vicki |
Is your puppy overweight? Sometimes a puppy will get very overweight, this happens especially in litters of one or two pups. These overweight pups take longer to learn to walk. Their hind legs will be weak but they will pull themselves around with their front legs. Over the years I have had a couple of overweight pups that would not start walking until they were about 5 weeks old. What kind of bedding are you using in the whelping box? It is best to use rugs that are not slick. You want the puppy to be able to get traction with his hind legs. Also you can hold the pup and place the hind end of the pup in the palm of you hand and let the pup push up on the hind legs. I would do this several times a day. Of course if the pup is not overweight and you think there is something wrong then it would be best to have a vet check out the puppy. I am just posting what I have experienced over the years. |
I was also curious to know why she has a 4 week old puppy? |
Congratulations on the new puppies. I am sorry to hear the little one is having trouble. Hopefully with all your care it will be running around like it's litter mates in a couple of weeks. Best wishes. |
Didn't see your earlier post about the litter and the vet visit. Happy to know there won't be any permanent damage to your baby. Hope all the puppies are doing good. |

Just an FYI: I have noticed that when a new YT member posts, there is a delay (sometimes long) before it appears on the site. I read this in an old very long thread where several people would make comments or ask questions and think that the OP had not responded, only to later come back and find that he or she had been posting several replies - just had to wait for them to appear. I noticed this with my first several posts as well. I did not see OP's posts about the vet until this morning, but now they appear before others that were up last night. |
