Took Nikki to the vet today
 
Nikki has been showing some signs of declining health. Most recently falling over a couple of times, confusion and hair loss. The vet feels his falling over is from his bad LP in both legs. It seems when the left one pops out it freaks him out and he falls over. He seems to get it back in place pretty quickly. He also has cataracts in both eyes now so is only seeing shadows and movement. She didn't feel he had any neurological issues. She is sending out a more comprehensive blood panel and checking for thyroid for his hair loss. Heart and lungs are fine. So I will see what the test results say. His bloodwork from 2 months ago was normal except for his BUN was elevated and he is on KD diet for that. I mainly wanted to get him checked out before I leave town Saturday and leave him with my daughter. Hopefully, he will be fine. Thanks

Youve been busy at the vets office lately with Cali and Nikki. I will keep Nikki in my good thoughts and prayers that everything checks out okay.

You know Nikki has a special place in my heart ever since the threads of Carol and the visits to the nursing home. I will pray that he gets better soon.

Nikki is about 17, Patti? He is so incredibly lucky to have you in his life to give him all this wonderful care. I'm sending lots of prayers for his continued good health.

Thanks everyone. Yes Nikki is estimated to be at least 17 years old. The vet also said he had scar tissue in his ears from what you felt were previous hematomas. I always wonder what his prior life was like. Probably not good from the condition he was found in. I just want him to live out the rest of his life being loved and cared for.

Nikki is definitely in good and loving hands. The senior years can be difficult. I recall you posted pictures when Nikki first came to live with you and one of your girls seemed to stick by Nikki on his blanket when you had your whole gang outside. Was that Cali? Is Nikki still growing closer to the girls and snuggling?

Pixie is the one who sleeps by him. He goes after Cali and Roxie but they know he can't hurt them. Latley, Roxie will go sleep in his bed when he's not in it and when he comes back he will lay next to her. When I am not home my DH says he hangs out with them in the hall. When I am home he is glued to me.

The vet called tonight with the test results from the outside lab. His BUN was a little lower than 2 months ago and his ceatinine was a little higher. Everything else looked good. She is going to give me a powder to put on his food. I was at the gym so I couldn't right it down, but it began with a P and it has to do with phosphorus levels. After a month she will check his level to make sure it is ok and go from there. I can't find the name of the powder so if anyone know could you please let me know.

No it began with a P I think I found it online last night but forgot it already! lol Nikki's not the only one getting old!

Was it Epakatin? That is usually what you get from the vet for phosphorous levels. I would ask about aluminum hydroxide powder as this is a more effective solution in addition to diet etc. ♥

That might be it all i heard was placatin so that makes sense. I was at the gym and it was noisy when the vet called. So instead of Epakatin I should ask about aluminum htdroxide or would he go on both? Thanks for the information.

The Epakatin will not hurt, it is a natural supplement but has not been scientifically proven to lower phosphorous levels though we think it helped Giz in the beginning. The aluminum hydroxide is proven. I would not give both. Your vet may have suggested the Epakitin because that is what they are given. Most vets are not CRF specialists. We also gave Gizmo Azodyl; another supplement which did not harm but not sure if it helped either. Anything that can keep the phosphorous and anemia in check is what is needed. We did tons of research online and afterwards stuck with what seemed best for Gi. Do not give the Epakitin and Aluminum Hydroxide Powder gel at the same time. Also your vet may not have the AlumHydrox. We had to special order it from Home page - Thriving Pets .
