grooming longer hair.
 
how old is a puppy when there hair doesnt have that "puppy cut" look? is it very difficult to brush and care for if i dont keep him clipped. honestly, where i live, every yorkie i ever see is all cut down.

Welcome! I think most of mine started looking more adult like about 8 or 9 months of age. That's when their hair seems to start laying down more. As to how difficult it is to keep then in a long coat depends on the type of coat they have. I have 2 with silky coats and they are very easy to care for. They rarely mat and can go without daily brushings. My other 2 have cottony coats and they are hard to keep unmatted. Even with daily brushings they seem to get mats. I love the long coats so I keep them all in it. Finding the right grooming products helps a lot too. Do you know what type of coat yours has yet?

I keep Rosie's coat long. It brushes the ground. She has a silky coat. The only thing I have to do is brush her daily. I also use the Yorkie Splash and Shine shampoo and conditioner. Most people around here keep their yorkies cut short too. My groomer loves that I keep Rosie long. She only has 2 that she grooms that keeps their coat long. I really don't think keeping her long is a problem. Just daily brushing.

would i be able to tell the type of coat at 15 weeks? he kinda just looks like a typical puppy now, but if i wouldnt say the coat is silky right now? thanks

Longer Hair
 
My boy has a silky coat that I groom daily. I am worried about the winter with the snow. He will come in with the snow balls all over him. I really don't want to cut him short but he will be so wet in the winter.

Yep looks like a silky. He has a beautiful coat!! I think if you keep him brushed you will not have any trouble.

my millie's hair looked like that when i took her to petco back in california, but here in germany its soooo cold that i keep her in a snuggy when we go out, but it mats her hair like crazy. right now she has so many mats that i feel bad for her. i have very little resources out here for her hair care and little money to be shippin stuff to my APO. are there any home remedies any one knows of?

Okay what will help a bit, is get some scrunchies, and band up her hair prior to putting on the coat. And if you can get a silk wrapping jacket, put that on first then the coat. Immediately take off coat when indoors, unwrap, and use a good grooming spray, brush coat out working from tips to roots, by small sections at a time.

If the mats are bad right now, get PEK by ISB and soak mats in it prior to trying to remove them.

Gail, Where do you get scrunchies? I need to do this with Jesse's coat, he has a really silky coat, but it is getting quite long now and jackets and sweaters really bunch the hair up.

Usually can be got at the dollar store, or Shoppers Drug mart, or even in the baby's aisle at any department store. You can also braid the hair then put in scrunchy, and half or quarter the length of the braid prior to putting on jacket.
Also you can shave his tummy hair which will help some. You might be able to get away with two braids on his sides, one over his rear leg, and front leg and one each chest and between rear legs.

Long coat
 
I love a long coat but I really need to talk to someone about keeping it like this especially during the winter. I see most in a shorter style. I am having a problem with him wetting his coat when he lifts his leg. I guess his aim is not very good. Also If I put a coat on him he wets that. Wonder if someone has some suggestions here. I may have to design my own clothing line!!!!!
Suggestions are appreciated.

I keep both of my Yorkies in long coat. One of them is silky and the other one is cotton. Every day after our walk they bring home all the leafs of the park with them. For an hour walk I need about one hour grooming. I get all the leafs with my hands then I brush them then I wash their legs. Cotton hair is a nightmare! It becomes tangled if you put clothes on or if you put a harness on, even with pj's! But I just love long hair. The only thing that helps I think is using a brush that I use for me. Not that metal dog combs or brushes.
Look at the pic. On the left it's Milou with the silky coat and on the right it's Jean with the cotton coat. Can you see the difference?

They are both so cute. I can see the difference. I have 2 of each.
