New Yorkie Mommy and New to site. HELP! Hi. My name is Tiffany and I just got a 3 year old yorkie yesterday. When I went to get My lil Gracie she was matted and all dirty. I have cleaned her up and made her pretty now but I have a million questions. The woman said she bred Gracie and she MIGHT be due on the 28th of this month but Gracie doesnt seem to be pregnant. I do feel something fluttering in her tummy but she isnt fat{ really I can feel her bones!} and her nipples dont seem to have any milk.Im worried about her and want to make sure Im taking the best care of her I can. She has a vet appointment on the 26th. |
I would call the vet and explain the situation. If she is that only gives you 2 days to prepare. You will need to find someone to advise and mentor you and you need xrays to make sure she can safely deliver the pups. Try posting in the breeders section and asking for help if she is. Did the previous owner say what she had bred her with? And how much the Dad weighed? |
I called the woman and she told me it was a 5lb male yorkie.I asked her again why she sold me this dog so cheap{ 50$} and she stated because she never has had a litter. Im worried the woman knows something I dont about the dog and something awful will happen to her. |
Hopefully not. Maybe it is just because she never had a litter before. It sounds like your Gracie will be glad she has you now. It doesn't sound like the woman took very good care of her. Hopefully it is nothing and Gracie will be a sweet joy for you. I know you have a million questions and I promise you have found the right place to ask them. Welcome and enjoy your new baby. |
Welcome. I agree she needs to be seen by the vet first thing Monday. How big is Gracie? The Breeders Section will be able to give you a lot of advice. |
Thank you very much and yes I do. Shes been through alot I can tell..she jumps at every sound and when she can run in the yard she hops like a wild rabbit she loves it so much. I dont think she was very loved and I honestly hope she isnt having pups cuz I just want her to spoil and love..not to use as a money making device.I will do whatever I can to make sure she is happy for the rest of her life thats why I joined this site..hoping to be the best yorkie mommy I can be..! |
She is very small.. Im guessing she is 4 pounds.. Her bones are very noticable when U pet her,U can feel them bad. Is that normal for a yorkie? |
You need to take her to a Vet as soon as you possibly can. Really. I hope everything works out! I'll be praying for you! |
Thank you..I have her se up for the soonest they could. Im just freakin out. I guess I worry too much but I feel so bad about how her life had to have been so far. I wish I knew someone who could be right here helpin me out with her cuz I am so full of questions and worries LOL |
I put a link to this thread over in the breeder section. Is there any way you can get her in to the vets before the 26th? 9 days seems way too far off, especially if she is possibly going to whelp on the 28th. I'm just angry beyond words that anyone would sell a yorkie they thought might be whelping!!! Talk about being freakin irresponsible. If the 26th is the soonest this particular vet can see her, you need to find another. I know there are multiple members here in PA. Maybe they can point you in the right direction. |
First of all: WELCOME and CONGRATS!!! Looks like your little girl is a very lucky one and you will be a great Yorkie mom. It is not normal that you can feel her bones so she is probably emaciated. The vet can tell you if she is prego or not. If she is she might have some stillborn puppies or very underweight. The great people in the breeders section can help you with your questions about that for sure. If she is not pregnant it would be the best if you have her spayed as soon as possible. Don't worry, you'll do fine and bless you for taking in a little furbaby in need of a good home! |
Ohhh... I should have clarified that I'm not angry at the OP for taking her. I'm mad at the seller. I hope that came through in my post, if not, I apologize. |

Okay Tiffany post in the breeders section, but 28th is about11 days from now. You should take her into your vets NOW and get an Xray done to see if she is pregnant if she is at this late date you will need to enlist your vet or your vet's recommendation to help you whelp these puppies. Go to the breeders section there are permanent "stickies: that tell you about whelping boxes, whelping puddings ets. I'm not sure why you bought a girl that Might be pregnant but you did and it is now your responsibility to care for her well being. Your first order of business is to find out if she is pregnant ; and if so we shall do all we can to help guide you. But again I stress if she is pregnant you will need the help of a vet or if you could get a mentor the help of a mentor. I certainly hope she is not pregnant and soon you can neuter her, |
thank you. I will get her spay..I dont want to have puppies .. I just was lookign for a dog to love on for me. lol |
I didnt take it as anyone was angry with me..I just wanted to save her soon as I saw her. Poor baby was in a nasty home with matts all over her and dirty... Im making sure she will have a great life now. Just hope she gets over being so jumpy. I wouldnt hurt her for anything! |

Oh thank you for caring like that. But you need to care some more, by taking her in for an Xray next week to see if she is pregnant. Jumpy will resolve itself with your love and dedication to her. Whelping pups is a serious concern. Please do find out if she is indeed pregnant. |

Tiffany, It's so very nice of you to have taken in this precious little girl...I'm sure she will be loved by you forever. Like someone said before you should call your vet and tell them you suspect that she may be pregnant and you need her to be looked at now. For your own peace of mind and for her health I would do that as soon as possible. |

Tiffany if your vet won't agree to see her before the 26th when you tell him that there is a possibility she may be pregnant, then you really need to call around and find a different vet. Please get her seen ASAP:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |

Congrats on your new baby! I'm sure that she will soon realize that she's in a loving home and will stop being so startled. 3 years of no love is a lot though! Glad to hear she likes the outdoors, it's a great way to bond! I know Kasha and I love taking walks to explore, I'm sure you guys will too. You said you can feel her bones? Hopefully you are getting her to eat (sometimes they get scared and wont!) and especially since she might be pregnant you should make sure she's eating high quality food. I know everyone has already said this but even those who are expecting pups for the first time find it overwhelming! There is a lot to prepare for! My family bred our Scottie years back and it was lots of work(and on a side note amazing/beautiful and full of puppy breath) even though we had the full 2 months to prepare. So, I'm sure that's why everyone is urging you to find a way to take Gracie to a vet ASAP. I hope everything works out! Congrats & welcome! |
congrats on your new little girl Gracie. She is blessed that you gave her a home. I hope for her sake that she is not pregnant. After the vet appointment you will know more. I would tell the vet that you want her seen asap bc you are worried that she is pregnant and she only weighs 4 lbs. Any good vet will find a time to squeeze you in. Most vets set aside a few appointments for emergency and this should be considered an emergency bc you don't know when she will deliver or if she can. Sending prayers your way and Gracie is a very lucky to have you in her life:) |
Im feeding her IAMS. Im tryin to get her fatten up because I dont think U should feel any dogs back bone and ribs.Im mixing both wet and a little dry because she wont eat the dry at all but the person i got her from said she only fed her dry. Gracie will eat the wet fine but she licks it off the dry and pushes the dry out of her bowl. Im tryin to make sure she gets the crunch from the dry for her teeth. Im tryin to do everything right for her and Im reading all I can find on the internet about Yorkies and I joined this site for added advice. I do thank everyone who has responded but I at one point felt I was being scolded for taking her in.I wasnt very clear on how and why I got her and why I now think she is pregnant.Im just really in search of help and answers. |
Please don't take it as anyone scolding you. It's just that you may have walked into a possibly life threatening situation for your new girl. If she is only 4 pounds and nearly ready to whelp, she may very well be too small to safely deliver & require a ceserean. An X-ray will help determine if there are pups, how many and whether her pelvis is wide enough to deliver. Also, a breeder who is so irresponsible as to sell you a possibly whelping female is also most likely to have not done any of the necessary pre-breeding health tests on either the male or female :( There is no need to go to an emergency vet tomorrow (unless there IS an emergency) but on Monday morning you do need to call and explain the whole situation to the vets office. If they still can't get you in, they aren't the kind of people you would want to have taking care of your baby on a regular basis anyway. There are lots of vets out there, just call another office. There are a lot of supplies you are going to need to start collecting in a hurry if she is whelping. The most important thing to find is an experienced mentor. Try calling any rescues in your area and see if they can put you in touch with someone who would be willing to help. For your sake, I do hope this is a false alarm and you can just enjoy being a new yorkie mom. But if it's not, you'll get lots of good advice here. It won't necessarily be sugar coated, but it will ALWAYS be with the best interest of your dog in mind. |

You wouldn't be the first person to get a "bonus" when you bought your yorkie. Just this morning there was someone who had a yorkie who she had been told had been spayed when they had a surprise. I just had a horrid thought... You don't think the original breeder would try to get the puppies back from you, do you? If it turns out that Gracie is whelping, I would definitely check with animal control in your area to find out any laws pertaining to the matter. Save any ads, emails, contracts etc that you have showing she sold you Gracie. The last thing you need is to have the pups wind up in the hands of that horrid breeder! |
