Has anyone ever gotten their dog DNA tested? Just curious. What were your results? Was your pup 100% Yorkie, or what? Everyone I've talked to said theirs were really far off what they ever thought, and it kind of makes me think it's a scam? Is it a scam? We would love to get Derby DNA tested sometime because of our sketchy breeder situation. |
I don't know if i would ever have Mabel DNA tested! She's supposed to be 100% yorkie but i think she might be part ferret! Seriously tho, i can see having it done if you might be a big time breeder or show dog competetor. also i,ve heard it might be beneficial to do so if the dog had medical problems as knowing what they contain is supposedly helpful. IDK tho.:) |
I had my Parti, Nicholas tested by Mars and his came back 100% Yorkshire Terrier. |
I've always been curious too. I'd love to see what Jackson comes back as. He's clearly either Silky, Yorkie, or both but I'd like to know... oh well, it's not a huge deal. |
I've always wanted to have this done with my 2 dogs who are rescues. One is a Cocker Spaniel but I've always wondered if he was full Cocker. The other I'm guessing is a Chi/JRT mix and I would love to find out if I'm right! LOL. Although, I'm curious how accurate they are too. |

I had a AKC Profile of DNA Analysis done on Zada, Azrael, & Razael. These profiles are used solely for genetic identity and parentage verification purposes. I had this done after I heard some dogs that are stolen are having the micro chip cut out. I wanted to be a step ahead. Doesn't matter to me if there was a questionable character in the "wood-pile". (I doubt seriously if there was though). |

what was the process? Did you send them a strand of hair, or what? |
Gatsby has a DNA number on his AKC papers and i have thought about sending in to see what it would see for fun but have not spent the money |
A friend of mine (that has more money than me) had this test done on a stray dog that she adopted. She thought it was a golden retriever and she just wanted to see if she was right. We all made bets on it and she was part right but he had a traveling salesman in there as well. I think it cost her about 100.00 at the time and that was over a year ago. I have always wished humane societies had that instant technology because I have gone to look at dogs they advertised as Chihuahua's or Yorkies and after seeing the dog I wondered who had made that guess. Sometimes they aren't even CLOSE. |
I had to have Kalani DNA'd when she had her puppies. She was brazilian registry and I registered her with AKC when she was a pup, but when she had pups, in order for them to be akc, I had to DNA her. |

We had our stray (not Yorkie) rescue DNA tested last year. Just wanted to know what breed(s) she might be and I was a little surprised. (I asked for this as my only birthday present, by the way. :)) |
what was your rescue? |

4 Attachment(s) My mom's dog was rescued from a neighbor 9 years ago. They had a female shih tzu that they bred, and she had a litter of pups. The mom and puppies were kept OUTSIDE in a cat carrier, covered in fleas, it was horrible...but that's another story. All the puppies died from parvo except one...she was the last one left and the neighbor asked us to come look at her (at the time we didn't even know she had puppies), and we could not leave her with those horrible people. We wanted to rescue the mother too but she wouldn't let us have her. We were told that the father was a Yorkie. She didn't really look like a Yorkie OR a shih tzu, but she was the cutest puppy. She has been my mom's baby now for 9 years and they are inseparable. She sleeps with her head on my mom's pillow every night. :) My parents are divorced now, but my dad actually ended up taking the mother when the people moved out (they brought her over and said if he didn't take her they would take her to the pound!). Anyways, a couple years ago for Christmas I bought my mom the wisdom test so we could use it on Teddie and find out what breeds she REALLY is...and the results came back 90% Shih Tzu???? We collectively agree that it must be wrong...because although Teddie has a few shih tzu features and we know that's what her mother is...she also has some features that are not AT ALL shih tzu. She has more of a terrier personality and terrier hair. She looks 100% different from her mother. I suppose the father could have been a terrier/shih tzu MIX and maybe she is 75% tzu, but I just can't see it. I will always wonder if it was accurate. I think I paid about $80 for the test. Here are a couple pictures of my mom's Teddie Bear...:D |
Oh there is NO doubt in my mind that dog is 90% shih tzu. I KNOW shih tzu's, I used to breed and show them for a little while. And rescued many. I can see it clearly. That DNA test is very accurate What was the other 10%? Yorkie? |

The other 10% was undetermined...they couldn't say what else was in there so I don't know what that means. Also, I made a mistake...it wasn't the wisdom panel...it was this: |

Well the pictured of her shaved I could see her features even better and that was mainly how I could tell.. Her leg shape, chest, and her long body. Shih tzu's also have silky soft long coats... But she is adorable. I especially like her wet look:) Also, shih tzu's can easily get up to 20 pounds. AKC is between 9 and 16 pounds. But I have seen them larger. And whatever that 10% is, is obviously throwing the larger size. She could very well be mixed with terrier, lots of terrier breeds out there. |
Well this might be the problem, their web site says >>"We believe that 92.5% of the mixed breed dog population in the USA is covered by our 62 validated breeds." They have DNA for only 62 breeds. BioPet Vet Lab - DNA Breed Identification |
Mars Wisdom Panel "The Mars Wisdom Panel test offers excellent breed detection and accuracy with a database of 170 breeds detected, one of the largest of any DNA breed test." That is a HUGE difference then the BioPet! |
