Yorkie vs Silkie
 
Can someone tell me what the difference is between a Yorkie and a Silkie? My baby looks more like a Silkie from the pictures I've seen (even though the place I bought her from raises Yorkies); her color is quite silver and she seems to have a longer body than a Yorkie. She weighs 8#. Just curious and thought someone on here could tell me about the Silkie breed. :confused:

LOL, I have the similarities detailed in my site, my web address is in my siggy, you will see pictures of yorkies, silkies and the australian terrier.
I breed silky terriers, I can tell the difference from far,but to the untrained eye they look very similar.
check my site is a wealth of information about the silky there.

Yes, she looked just like a Yorkie puppy when we bought her. We had two previous Yorkies that lived to ripe old ages and they didn't look like her. (Even though the place where we got her is advertised as USDA inspected) I think it is just a puppy mill - really didn't know about that too miuch when we bought her.

I love Carmen's site! Great info there. I have two Silkies. They look very very different from one another. One is a puppy mill puppy and I swear sometimes, she has the long body and short legs of a doxy, LOL. My baby came from a Silky breeder where I was able to see her parents, so I have a great idea of what she will look like as an adult. I think, no matter what breed of dog, there can be major differences in the breed depending on so many factors and how much effort the breeder is putting into what specific traits they want, and betterment of the breed vs a breeder that is just breeding anything for a buck. I think the picture in your avatar is adorable!!

LOL - I'm laughing because we call her our doxy-yorkie!!! You've got that right - about betterment of the breed versus just for the buck. You live and learn and we learned a valuable lesson - however, we wouldn't trade her no matter what she looks like!!! :animal36

I love your website and can see that you truly love your dogs and are a wonderful breeder. Ok, I bet my Yorkie has a Silkie "in the woodpile", from reading what the Silkies are like. She would much rather walk than be carried and is not a lap dog per se, as my other Yorkies were. But I love her just the same - thank you for your info. :)

LOL, doxy-yorkie, that is funny, i never heard that before, thank you for visiting my site I hope that you guys learned a bit more about the difference and similarities of the silky-yorkie breeds. I love both breeds I think that once you love your baby no matter what it is is LOVE:p:p:p

Those Silkies are beautiful!! We had one come into the salon the other day. They're definitely slightly bigger and to me they seem a little more squarish in shape. We also have a lot of people come in with a Silky and think it's a Yorkie :)

I am really thinking Jackson is Yorkie/Silky mix (I know we've had this convo before) because sometimes I see Yorkie in him and sometimes I see Silky, same with his personality traits. Again, who knows/who cares! :p

But your babies are beautiful! Maybe one of these days when I decide to get another pup, I will come to your site. :) Your babies are adorable! The little boy for sale is melting my heart.

A Silky isn't hyper but they do have tons of energy and love to play fetch, go for long walks and in general, be involved in whatever the family is doing! They are loving but independent in nature. That is Jackson to a tee.

The above quote is so our Lexie too - my two previous Yorkies didn't care so much about chasing balls or taking walks. With our bad winter this year, Lexie has not gotten to chase her beloved ball very much outside, so we kind of make do in the house, but it's not the same. She is so independent too, but wants my attention constantly - on her terms like a cat!

on your website you said silkies are often 10 lbs, can you ever have smaller ones, my Samson looks more silky but is only 4.5lbs. Harley for sure looks exactly like a yorkie. DH and I have always thought Samson was silky but he is so small

Just like Yorkies, Silkies come in various sizes. I think the breed standard for a Silky is 8 to 11 lbs. Whereas a Yorkie is under 8. I may be off a bit on that but not much. My Moka was 7.5 lbs at her last vet check and she is 3 years old so fully grown. My Mylee I am guessing will mature out around 8 lbs. too, but I purchased her from a breeder breeding them to the breed standards so that is what I expect. I have two co-workers that have Silkies around 6 lbs.

Maggie looks like a Silky after looking at Carmen's web site. I was asked once if she was a Silky. Now I don't know! But whatever she is, I love that little girl with all my heart!
