13 week old Izzy...I'm a new Yorkie mom..Help!! My husband surprised with an early Valentines Gift Friday morning....My 13 week old Yorksire Terrier...it was love at first sight...Then it was like being a new mom with your first born..As of Friday she weighed 2.4 lbs...WOW that it small...I have read alot about yorkies this past weekend and I have a few questions... She really get crazy (playfull) when after she eats and starts to pant really heavy or If she goes out to go potty she comes in and starts panting really heavy...She has dry food out at all time ( natures source ) then 3 time a day i also give her alittle wet puppy food (Wellness)...I know she eat fine but could she be low blood sugar from being over excited or cold? I did but Nutrical this morning and she loved it...I know this a dumb question to ask but I just want to be well informed when it comes to my new little baby... Thanks so much!!!:rolleyes: |
Yes, she is getting to hyper. I would not recommend feeding her wet food, Yorkies are prone to having teeth issues, so dry food is always better. Have you contacted the breeder to see if she was like this at home? Nutri-cal is good, but I wouldn't get her "hooked" on it.:) |
Congrats on the new pup. I think shes panting because shes excited. If it were low blood sugar there would be other symptoms such as being lethargic or shaky |
As chachi said, there are more signs to low blood sugar. Is she lethargic at all? I am sure she is just hyper being a puppy. |
Welcome to YT... |
Hello and welcome to YT!!! Congratulations on your new furbaby! Be careful, they are really addicting! LOL Sorry I don't have advice, but still wanted to welcome you. :D |
welcome to YT.. I have really no advice.. other than I think your doing a great job, being a first time yorkie mom!! On the wet food.. I would continue it if she is doing well on it. My dogs have always gotten wet food with one of their meals and none of them have dental issues. As long as wet food isnt her sole diet and she has decent chews her teeth should be fine.. :) |
Welcome and congratulations. She could just be getting overexcited. Have you had her checked by the vet yet? If not mention it to them they can check her out. Can't wait to see pictures. |
Hi there ... I read on another post here on YT a while back that panting while they run is kind of like laughing. Dunkin will still run back and forth panting when he gets excited. It makes me smile to think he's laughing because he's happy :D |

:thumbup::thumbup: and Welcome To YorkieTalk! :) |
Welcome to yt. |
AWWW.....Thanks so much for the welcomes and advice...as the panting goes she was still doing it while she was laying next to my husband as she was sleeping..And it last till about 2:30 in the morning..I just couldn't go to sleep till i made sure she was ok...I think it was due to being over excited and playing so hard...I have a 1 year old Chihuahua who just loves her and i know Twilight was not helping..lol..And yes i agree about about puppy food...I just figured I would start out with giving her a Tablespoon of it to supplement alittle because that what she was on when we got her. She is up-to-date on her shots but she's going to the vet on Wed. so i know for myself everything is going well....Thanks again |

There have been multiple studies that have shown that eating wet food does not have any more detrimental effect on teeth than eating all dry food. Wet food does also have the added benefit of a higher water content, which is good for an animal's urinary tract. Generally speaking, kibble is actually LESS nutritious for dogs than a high quality canned food. When you really look at the breakdown of calories, proteins, minerals and other nutritional factors, a combination of wet and dry is ideal. I follow my vets advice and homecook, leaving kibble out for my yorkies to snack on...and most importantly I aim to BRUSH THEIR TEETH DAILY. :thumbup: |
I am not sure about the panting, but I did want to let you know that when you take her for walks, always use a harness, never a collar. The collar can collapse their trachea. Congrats on your new puppy. Welcome to YT! |

Welcome, a few simple suggestions...that i had to learn all on my own. Never have her vaccinated w/ more than 1 vaccination per vet visit. They could overdose the small pup (it happened to me even after i asked the Vet 3 times if it was safe, she had a serious allergic reaction and almost died,....YES I stopped going to that Vet!!) Nutri-cal is a God-send. Don't leave home without it! Plenty of exercise and love!! Welcome to the Yorkie Talk Family!! |

Welcome to YT. I see that you are from Michigan and I am from MI. Just a heads up you don't want your Furbabie to get cold so if you take her out in the snow you want to put a coat or snowsuite on. Your babie does not have an undercoat, their fur is more like hair and they get cold like us; also puppies can have a hard time keeping their temp up so keep here dry and warm when outside. Enjoy your new Babie:) Cassandra:love:'s :aimeeyork Dallas!! |

Gatsby used torun around the house sniff everything and sit down pant for 5-10 min and do it again he grew out of it in just a few weeks so i wouldn't worry but do mention it to your vet it will ease your mind |
Congrats on your baby, your so lucky, I wish my husband would get me a yorkie for Valentines:rolleyes: but i seriously don't think he will... welcome to YT you will learn a lot on here... cant wait to see pics of your new baby. |

Just curious, I know that you believe kibble is best for preventing tartar buildup, but do you also believe that it is best nutritionally? I have researched dog food alot, and I personally don't feel that it is. BTW, I am only asking you because I respect your opinion. Please don't think that I'm challenging you. What to feed is such a personal decision, we all just have to do what we feel is best for our babies :) |

Welcome Welcome and congrats on the new puppy. I got Molly for Thanksgiving, she was 10 weeks/2lbs and it was like having a newborn in the house. She is fun and very loveable. I treat her like a little person. She sleeps in bed with us, camps with us and goes on visits us. I feed her dry food 3x a day for now and have read to go to 2x when she is a bit older. I have noticed that she drinks ALOT. We had the problem with the low blood sugar but have overcome that!! She is now 17 1/2 weeks and weighs 4lbs. Hope you have a great time with your baby and there are many people here to help you if you need. :D |
