Where can you take your yorkies? In the UK the only place we can take dogs is Pets at Home, rather like your Petsmart I guess. Although now I have a 'doggie' bag I did take Alfie to a bathroom showroom and nobody noticed. |
If you do a search there are a few recent threads about this. Here in Florida I'm fortunate enough to be able to bring her to most anywhere besides Target and Walmart and indoor/sit down restaurants (outdoor or beachside cafes are great ) |
Most places will let me bring in Toby as long as they don't have food( restraunts/ grocery ). I just make sure I ask first. |
Know what you mean, I'd love to beable to take my two more places, but apart from petshops the only other place I've found was a garden centre, so long as your dog is on a lead or being carried. Wish we had dog parks too as it would be nice for them to be able to socialise in a safer envirement. If I win the lottery maybe I'll set up the U.Ks first ever dog park. |
I take Couver anywhere that does not serve food, and havent had any problems. He always stays in his bag, so it usually is not a problem :D |
everywhere I can I take Axle everywhere, except to dinner or superwalmart...can't take him to the dollar store either they have a food case...but he went to home depot today too funny he was riding around in a cart like a baby, I took a picture ill have to post it later! he goes to all the auctions, to the petsmart, to the auto stores, to the car shows where ever I go, he can't go to work with me I'm a nutrition manager at a school. |
I have had this idea! Honestly I thinking about this today... What if there was a place like a dog community. I am thinking along the lines of an upscale pet mall where there are specialty shops like dog bakeries and novelty shops, AND an exercise facility where you and your dog can exercise together (i.e.- walking track, pool area, and treadmills), maybe even a playground where dogs can play and owners can chit chat and make connections and play dates. It will be a place where pet owners have the opportunity to spend as much time there as they like. I take my dog to pet stores just to get her out of the house but I always feel rushed to buy something and get out. Hopefully this upscale doggy shopping mall/exercise facility will take that pressure all away. I am thinking about putting this all together in my community soon. Hopefully this will all come to fruition, right now it is just a brainstorm I have. |
Limelitediva that sounds awesome. I would go to a place like that even if it was just to let Kaji hang out with other doggies. As for taking him places, I take him everywhere! Even in places where they say no pets. If they don't see him, they don't know he's there, right??;) Our most recent outing was to the Grand Canyon. We stayed at a hotel that said "no pets" and well... I broke the rules. I do try to avoid taking him to grocery stores but if he's with me and I need something I'd rather take him in his purse like carrier and get in and out quickly. Better alternative than leaving him in the car. |
As stated by others, I take my babies everywhere that doesn't serve food. Some of our favorite places to go are TJ Maxx, Ross, Old Navy, Home Depot and Lowes. I always put their blanket in the bottom of the stores basket and put them in. They don't care for Petsmart because they get groomed there occasionally. When we enter the store, they start shaking. |
I keep thinking about sneaking Max into stores because I just can't bear to leave him home. I wish I could just put him in my pocket and take him everywhere! :) He's 12 lbs and won't stay in a carrier so I guess I"m limited to where I can take him. |
I try and take mine to most places in the UK, and I frankly don't go to places that don't let me :) You may find that more places are taking dogs now as they realise it's a bit of a marketing ploy during the recession. Bluebelle comes to pet stores and our local pub (just the bar area) and a couple of other pubs that aren't so local. So strange that 20 miles across the sea in France you can take the dog wherever you want! |
1 Attachment(s) trying to figure out how to get this picturein here this was yesterday at home depot....he never barks in his carrier, we walked into home depot and he started barking like crazy so I took him out of the carrier and he rode in the buggy! guess I figured it out here is the picture smiles everyone! |
I might just try taking Alfie places in his dog bag and see what happens. I can understand some shops don't want dogs running around incase they have to 'do their business' but a small dog in a bag or even being carried is not a threat to anyone. Love the idea about starting up a dog play place both here in England and in America. Why hasn't somebody done it already. I can visualise it being like the soft play indoor places we have in England for tiny tots. You know, ball ponds, slides etc. A place where doggie mums and dads could meet for a coffee. In the Uk we just can't take our dogs anywhere except the pets at home and some pubs. So whoever wins the lottery first can set it up. :animal36 |

I just found these guys on twitter... MAPS4PETS Outdoor Locations |
I take Fancy everywhere with me in her kwigy bo carrier, noone ever knows the difference. I even had one woman come up to me and tell me how much she loved my "purse"! Fancy never stays home alone, she doesn't like being home alone anyways. She dances around me when she knows I'm getting ready to leave as if to say don't forget about me I coming too! When I set the carrier on the floor she hops in, makes a turn and lays down! :p |

A funny story The other day me and my beau went out to Boston Market. We were just finishing our meal when a lady walked in with a carrier. It was more of a PetFlys carrier style. She was trying to be discreet about it, but I saw the little Yorkie face peering out of the carrier's window. All I could do was smile and shake my head. 1). that's a health violation 2). I knew she JUST couldn't help it and 3). There was cop sitting 3 tables away |
I take Pippi everywhere. She's a registered service dog, and sits in my lap wherever we go. She's a great companion dog & fends depression off better than any advertised medication, I know this. |
My husband & I work together driving semi truck across the US & Tuffy comes with us. We pretty much take him everywhere except into restaurants. It's funny, our company has a "no pets' policy in their operating facilities but every single time we're in 1 the employees practically beg us to bring him in so they can love on him. |
I live in Ann Arbor, Michigan-- the city where Border's bookstores originated, and all three of the Border's (full stores, not mall stores) here allow dogs on leashes in the stores. Sophie and I love to get a coffee and a stack of books/magazines and hang out for a while at Border's. The only place she can't go is the cafe at Border's, so I just stick her in my purse or tuck her inside my coat while I get my coffee, and then we find a comfy chair and spot in the bookstore! :-) |
Winston won't stay in a carrier either, so we go to Petsmart a lot. I tried to put him in the wagon when I had to buy a big bag of food, but as soon as I started rolling he jumped out of the top - across the back of it. I was at the front of the store near the register and everyone saw. The really embarassing part was that I was holding his certificate because he just graduated from puppy training! We also go to the dog park, but it's too cold now. I also noticed that small dogs come more often on the weekends. By me someone also runs monthly themed dog parties through meetup.com at a dog daycare place. He LOVES that. |

Soooo cute !! These stores don't stop you. I'm such a rule follower I would be nervous. LOL:) |
Thanks Tinksmum We are networking with all the county councils that are highlighting if they wish to co-operate in promoting their "pet friendlyish" There are some great parks out there that need to be promoted to everyone. If there is anyway we can help you guys promote something via our Twitter account, just let us know. Our website is being given a more upmarket look over the next couple of weeks with much more information being added by the way, so please keep in touch. Julia x |
Have you looked at Welcome to the dog friendly website This is the largest site of dog friendly locations. They list hotels, holiday homes, attractions, beaches, pubs and my favourite, places to eat. Check it out.:D |
I have never done this, but I have seen puppies at our local mall. I know a mall about a hour away has pet strollers and you are allowed to take them anywhere there M-F from opening until 5 or 6pm. (Short Hills Mall in NJ) I have snuck Pickles into Target, we didn't go in the food section. She went to Home Depot and Lowes with us 2 weekends ago. She is only 4 lbs and loves to be held, so taking her places is easier. I take all 3 of them to dog parks, although finally finding one that we were comfortable at was a challenge. They go to a small breed meetup, from Oct-Apr the facility we went to for training offers a "Play & Train" on Friday evenings, they love that! Pet Boutiques, other meetup groups, my father-in-law and step mother-in-law love when the "granddogs" come to visit. It is actually becoming a weekend thing, the girls love their back yard. We went last weekend and my SMIL was "where are the girls? why didn't you bring them?". I got a text yesterday inviting us over tomorrow and she said that the "granddogs have to come see grandpa for father's day". I LOVE IT!! :D Around this area there seems to be at least a monthly activity we can find. A Pet Expo last month, Your Dog Is Worth It Too in August, October we are going to Fido's Festival....a weekend event here in NJ. I often google dog activities in NJ and am a member at meetup.com to find things to take them to. They are so well socialized, something I didn't diligently do so well with their predecessors. Another one of those hindsight situations. Belle has benefited from my guilt over it. At 9 years old I put her through basic training finally and she loved it! We are waiting for basic training II so she can take her canine good citizen test. She has high standards to live up to, both Coco and Pickles passed first time! :D:D |
Places to take your dog! Not sure if it you have the same places in the UK as in the US, but the following places I have taken my yorkies to with no issues at all are below: Home Depot Best Buy Borders Barnes N Nobles Loews Nordstrom Most Banks What I usually do is call the store I decided to go to first. Most of the time that store does not have any food (other then candy or soda), they will allow you to bring your pooches in. Thanks! |
I take Hepburn almost everywhere! I live in Berlin, Germany and I have to say, its one of the most dog friendly cities I have ever been to. Hepburn can go almost everywhere except where food to be prepared is sold, some indoor restaurants, and Ikea. He comes shopping with me and even sits in the dressing room while I try on clothes. He comes to museums, art galleries, churchs, etc. I think it has really helped him to be a very well adjusted and socialized puppy. He has had a lot of new experiences and he takes new things very well. I hope this easygoing behavior carries over to his first transatlantic flight in August. I will be taking him home to meet me family in the states (but he is flying in the cabin with me: at 3.4 pounds, he is the perfect travel companion!) |
