| I feel terrible !!! I received a phone call today from a kinda family member (Cousin in law to my brother) Christy. While visiting here in Alabama, Christy wanted to come to my house and see all my yorkies. The proud Mama that I as I extended the invitation to come. While visiting we spoke in depth about yorkies (Christy raises Maltese) and she has been very interested in yorkies and fell in love with my babies. Christy wanted to know if I knew of anyone that had any yorkies for sale and I did. So I called the breeder and she had two males available and was open to us going to see them late that afternoon. Well, needless to say we came back to lower Alabama with this male puppy. Christy was aware that the puppy had recieved his first shot and had been wormed, just days before we went up to look at the boys. While we were picking up the pup it was noticed he had tapeworm. And Christy went to my vet and recieved treatment for the tapeworm. Christy left two weeks ago and took the puppy to her regular vet for a routine check up and the vet decided to give the pup his second set of vaccinations and worm him again, just two weeks after his first series... I will try to shorten this story, the puppy became very ill with seizures, vomiting, ect... He was taken to a emergency vet clinic they told Christy the pup was wormed to much and his second set of vaccinations were not suppose to be given. Even though she explained to the vet everything he was give he still gave this pup his second series of shots, this vet was claiming the pup was showing classic signs of liver shunt. Christy call me yesterday and was asking me about the disease and could this breeder have this in her lines. I am thinking I sure hope not I have these lines. Well, the puppy died this morning and Christy insisted they open him and look at his liver and it was normal. And the emergency vet was correct on the cause of his rapid illness. Now, I feel so terrible for the pup, Christy and the breeder as I was the one that brought them all together. I just feel like I am somewhat responsible to everyone. But this poor little pup has to lose it's life because of a vet that doesn't know how to vaccinate a pup properly.

| Is it improper for me to say, "What an ignorant vet?" You aren't to blame at all. You couldn't possibly have even dreamed, even in your worst nightmare, that a vet could do something like this. But since she raises Maltese, why didn't she know as well? The whole scenario is so sad.

| Man that is so wrong- we trust in the vets with our babies, lets not forget how much money they charge. I know they are human but come on- I hope the vet has offered to pay for the puppy! I know that won't bring him back but if he hadn't made the mistake the puppy would still be here! I will keep them in my thoughts and prayers!

| wow,, that is so sad. Don't feel bad it was not at all your fault. What is she going to do about it? Can she go after the vet? They should pay!

I called Christy this afternoon to check on her to make sure she was okay, she was pretty upset this morning when we talked after she found out the cause of death. Christy trusted her vet that he knew what he was doing as I think most of us do. I also asked her what type of compensation he was going to make. She stated he was going to pay for the EM bill, no compensation on the pup as several years ago her husband had signed a wavier of responsiblity, that she was unaware of. So she is no resourses of compensation. Christy did tell me that she had asked the ER doc for referrence to a new vet... I have to call the breeder tomorrow and give her my regrets. This has just been on my mind all day and just can not shake it. I held the little guy had his sweet puppy kisses all over my face and now to think he is gone.

| What an awful mistake from the vet and he holds no liability! =( Don't be so hard on yourself, it wasn't your fault. The pup was meant for your friend and even though it was a short time between them, he recieved much love. RIP little baby. |

Banning Thread Dictator Donating Member | That is such a sad story, and I'm sorry for you to have to go through it. I agree with Megan. Even the worst things in life can lead to good things, and everyone who reads your post is going to learn from it. I know I will. I hope you and Christy can find some peace.

| I do not believe the release of liablility would hold up in this case. A release like that is usually NOT valid to allow "negligence" which is what this is. If that were possible everyone would have releases signed and not worry about neglience. The only right thing to do is to pay for the puppy imo! This is another example of a case proving that we really need to research vaccines and the potential harm they can cause despite the vet's insistence that they are harmless. I am more and convinced that the more knowledge we have the more powerful we will feel about saying NO to unnecessary vaccines. Had Christy known how dangerous it really is to over vaccinate she may have been more insistent and not allowed the vet to do the vaccination. |

| So sad... I had a stud client with a litter of one living pup. There were 3, but the bitch needed a section and two were dead..so she had one live, fat girl. At 3 days the vet docked the tail and said bring her at 10 days for worming. I told her not to go back, but the vet made her feel she was a bad breeder if she did not. The puppy died 4 hours after worming it. These situations are so hard to deal with, aren't they? |

| Sue, I am so terribly sorry!! I, like you, would feel the same way but this isn't your fault. Poor Christy ... please tell her how terribly sorry we are and that we will remember her in our prayers. I know she didn't have her Yorkie baby for long, but losing our heart to them only takes a second, I know you understand how that happens. I just feel so angry! I cannot blame her for wanting to find another vet ... she sounds like she is being much kinder than I would be in her position! I would be forced to "recommend" that vet to everyone I knew who had a pet!

| That is such a terribly sad thing to have happened. I agree though that the Vet should be responsible. A waiver should not cover malpractice and I think if she pursues it she could very well be successful. It won't bring the puppy back but at least she may be able then to afford another baby. They do help heal the grief. |
