The Real difference between a show dog and a pet

Huh. I remember someone recommended it as a flea remedy a while back (different board, I think), and someone said it wasn't just bad for fleas, it was bad for our furry friends as well. Maybe it was more of an issue for cats....

It has nothing to do with showing more than one dog here in California, it has to do with most of the shows are outdoors, so you can't leave your equipment overnight without developing legs and you never seeing it again.

Boy, was I lucky in Texas, indoor shows. However, getting one of these carts is a blessing in disguise.....no more packing and unpacking. Just roll everything to the car.

Well I would think if you put too much of it on the animal, and directly onto the skin it could cause problems. I just put a dab on my finger and then transfer it to the wrap. Eventually, they get the hint and leave them alone. Doesn't take but a couple of days. Not every dog requires it but, there are those that have that super attitude and will give you a run for your money.

UGH Mary I have a dog here I'm showing for someone and he doesn't keep his wraps in so I have to take them out when unsupervised UGH! What a pain!!!

Every once in awhile you get one of those. Did you start the slow bit, just on the hips first and then add them as you go.

My Tahlulah was the worst.....she'd have them off faster than I could put them up. So, it was the Mayonaise hair treatment for her.

He'll keep them in when I'm watching him and won't bother them it's when he's put up when he wants to get them out...out of boredom I'm sure.

More than likely....some just don't get it....no matter what determent you use. Those are the ones with super attitude.

I think a lot of people had things wrong for so long! Here are my thoughts and what I have learned over time...many of the posters have already stated what I have to say.

Pups from show breeders do Not cost more. What you do need to know is that we have done testing on the parents and the pups before they leave and these tests are not cheap. Not to mention boosters - the pups usually have all their boosters, except rabies before leaving. I know of some pet breeders that actually charge more than what show breeders sold their pups for. So you have to check around. Also you may have to wait for a litter to be born from a show breeder. Many do not breed a lot, nor have a lot of yorkies. I have found that there are many people looking for a yorkie pup are spotanous buyers - they have to have everything now. I have known some people that did not want to wait and they bought any pup they were able to buy at the soonest moment. They did not check out the breeder, nor did their research and just bought the first pup they could get. Then I get the calls later from these people of what a mistake they made by buying quickly - that something is wrong with the pup or it does not look like a yorkie now that it is growing up. People need to realize this is a lifetime commitment and should never buy on a whim!

Show breeders show to prove the quality of their dogs. Yes, it can be fun, but it is also a lot of work, money, and dedication to our breed. They are very serious in what we are doing! And breeding should be taken very serious!

When show breeders make a match it is after great thought and research. Learning the faults of all the dogs and knowing the lines. No dog is perfect so they try the best they can to produce the best they can, especially since they are wanting to keep a pup for themself from this match. They are not fortune tellers and do not have a crystal ball, even though they wish they did. So not all litters may turn out as they hope, but at least they are not just playing Russian Roulette and putting any two dogs together.

I have found too that the longer the pup stays with its breeder the more socialized it is. This is from my own experience. So the show breeder gets to see how the pups are developing and how the match is working out - and the pet buyer gets a well socialized and sometimes well trained pet puppy. Show breeders Cannot keep every pup in the litter. Usually they are keeping only one to hold on to for show. I have seen many of a Good Looking pup go to good pet homes.

Yes... I will babysit for free any of my pups I have sold - but never thought about grooming too. That is great Mardelin! I do get a lot of photos or stop overs to show me. I love seeing my babies come back to visit! I feel like a grandma!! Love it!

Yes, show breeders are very picky!! But we need to be. We love our babies and we take this very, very serious. We are totally responsible for our babies, since they cannot speak for themself. So we have to be careful for where they go and we want to make sure it is a lifetime commitment. :-)

I hope this is not getting off topic about show dogs, However, I'd like to share what happened today and who I met> I had walked into Petsmart this evening and a puppy training class was going on. The trainer was fairly good, but certainly not like Victoria or Ceaser ! Anyway, I happened to look on a chair, the lay a tiny yorkie. Long haired, golden around her face , with a silver body.
It was the trainers. I had a moment to speak to her about her yorkie. This little one was about 4-5 yrs old, and the trainer has had her for a little over a yr. She was about 3lbs . This Yorkie came from champ lines, and was being used to BREED. That was all she was good for at that home. The trainer told me she is extremely timid, scared around people, and nippy. Her last litter of pups had to be A c-section.
looking at this tiny, Yorkie, it was hard to imangine her giving birth at all. Then hearing about how scared and timid she is , and what kind of life she had was absolutely heartbreaking.
In the back of my mind, I kept thinking that this is what happens to a tiny purebred yorkie who's only purpose for living was to breed
I am happy that she has a new home now, and hopfully she can overcome her fearfulness towards humans . This little girl would look towards her owner all the time for direction. The Yorkie seemed so lost and did not know how or what to do. It was very sad .

You are on topic and this is a very valid observation. This is exactly one of the things I am talking about that a breeder who advertises, champion lines with no champions of their own is only in it for the money. Unfortunately this poor little girl you saw is exactly the problem that can happen when a show breeder's kennel name dogs get away from them.
As I said before, some show breeders don't care where they sell too, they are not considered reputable either regardless of whether they show. Some got away from the show breeder because they were duped by someone and should not have trusted them. This is why it is so difficult for a newcomer to get into the breed. We have to make sure a newcomer is not going to turn around breed/sell anywhere for the soul purpose of making money.
So the question you want to ask when someone is selling a pup, champion lines, "Do you show your dogs at all and how many champions have you produced?" Often sellers, and that's about all they are, will advertise Champion lines without ever seeing a show ring because they will ask way more money but you still don't really know what your getting. If the parents are pet quality, the pup will be pet quality or getting away from even looking like a Yorkie. Showing such as I do, and breeding with many champions in my lines, I still will get pet quality pups. All show breeders do regardless of what breed you are talking about.
Again, when buying a puppy, the breeder should be asking a lot of questions and unless you convince them that you want to get into showing, it should not be sold on open papers.
I have seen many ads, where one price will get you limited registration, a much higher price will get you open papers to do as you wish. This is so unethical. Often the pup is very young, you have no idea what you are really getting. There is such an ad on this forum right now. I would advise anyone to keep looking don't go there.
A pup should also never be sold under 2 1/4 to 2 1/2 lbs regardless of age. They are too small if especially under 2 lbs to go to a new home, risk factors are way too high.
Remember, regardless of parents size that pup could very well be small due to a health issue.
