The Real difference between a show dog and a pet

I know someone whom shows dogs like yourself, as well as being the one to handle them. She likes to spend time with them instead of letting a handler handle them. Her dogs are beautiful, like yours One of the dogs she imported from Germany which has a thicker, fluffy coat like some of yours also.

I know enough about showing dogs that I care not to do it. I couldn't put my dog thru all that they do. Some of them have to have surgery from what I have learned to get that perfect dog without any issues. I believe that is what one show lady told me. Am I correct~? A lot of work and money goes into owning a Yorkie or whatever kind of dog you have, and/or if you show the cost of travel. I went back in March to the dog show that they had in Louisville, KY. Those folks that show have special vans that were specially built to house their dogs that show. I was amazed to learn that~! But they are beautiful vans~!

You mentioned how children shouldn't be with a Yorkie. Well tonight I went to an outdoor concert and met a family, whose grandchild had a Yorkshire puppy. It was adorable, but the child kept carrying it and hugging it. The puppy wanted to be let down. She tried hugging on mine, and I told her not to since I wanted to listen to the music. My point here is that Yorkies aren't kids, and need their space to walk, run, etc. Question: is that why children shouldn't be around Yorkies~? I couldn't read all of the postings past yours since this is a hot topic with numerous of pages.

Another question: You mention that Yorkies don't need a lot of excerise. Does this apply to all Yorkies~? Mine needs a lot of excerise. He loves to walk and we have walked as long as 3.5 hours. There are times he doesn't want to walk, but to play ball. Do some Yorkies require more excerise than others~? Just curious. I might of read some of this on your website. Great website too~!

I hear people say all the time not to have yorkies around kids but I have to disagree. I have 7 grandkids ranging from 2 months to 14 years old and (all of them except the baby of course) have been taught how fragile these little ones are and are very gentle with them. Our furkids love being around the grandkids. They run and play with them the entire time they are here. (We also taught the grandkids the Yorkie shuffle) so no danger of stepping on one of them. So I say it all depends on the child and how you teach them. They have to be trained right along with the puppies. Lolita at first had issues when the kids were running with Laddy and would snarl and snap at them but when that happened we just laid her on her side and made her lay there and let the kids slowly pet her until she quit barking and biting at them.

My show dogs are my pets first and show dogs second. They have free run of my house plus a doggie door to my backyard they are always using and running all the time.
I drive a Ford Escape nothing special, I drive it to work and dog shows on the weekends. I fully believe all dogs need exercise I know some dogs get on doggie treadmills when they can't go outside and run and play especially those that have winters with snow all the time.

I agree with this also, I have raised 5 adult children now with my yorkies and as long as they are supervised and taught right from the start to be kind and soft touch. We do the yorkies shuffle here also And all kids at my house have to sit on the floor when playing with the puppies. Now I have my Grandchildren coming over and I get to start over ! I love it and so does the puppies

I just realized something...I really do enjoy this site and really like educating new people and I have taken a step back to re-evaluate my thinking and may have decided I should become a donating member to a site I really enjoy coming to and helping in anyway I can
This thread for me even has given me a new learning experience and rewarding things and has changed my view on certain things

You are very welcome! I decided since us show breeders are in the minority (maybe 3 or 4) within this "HUGE" community I decided to help anyone that wants it and willing to listen and learn. I will not be going anywhere So, with that I decided I would donate to a site that maybe us small group of show breeders can join in and help educate with the other breeders and give another insight to this wonderful breed and share our experiences and knowledge within the show world.

I think I answered your last question I believe all dogs need exercise. My yorkies are always exercising! I believe totally in this. I know some when they can't get outside they use doggie treadmills. You ought to see the yorkies that do agility that is an amazing sight! I actually have a yorkie that can do back flips LOL..a well exercised yorkie is a less mischievous yorkie

While trying to choose a breed to buy, I read lots of information on the different breeds, and Yorkies are considered to be one of the breeds that need the least exercise. For example, some breeds need to be walked for hours every day or they become nervous and destructive. Yorkies, on the other hand, don't need that much exercise, but they can gradually build up the stamina to go on very long walks, like you have discovered. So yorkies are good for people who can't go on hour long walks every day, but all dogs benefit from exercise, and puppies especially have lots of energy. If a dog is acting up, a good walk generally calms him down, but for a Yorkie, a 15 minute walk can be enough!

Thanks Brooklynn~! I have mine in agility now. We had a class a couple months ago at one facility, and now again at another place. Seeing which one is better. He loves it and some things he enjoys better than others. Like he loves the tunnel, but at first he didn't....like at the other place. Some things he is scared of a bit, but he does follow thru most of the way. It's a great way to excerise and to socialize with other doggies.

Thanks Nancy1999. When I first got him, we would go for runs around the block. Rather run and walking. At times, he loves to walk for long periods of time and takes me where he wants to go and where I don't. Other times, I have to make him walk or pick him up and walk a bit to get him going. Those are the days he would rather play ball. He loves the ball so much, he's torn all of them up. Anyways, I am the excerise nut and love to walk. I went to the gym tonight for a stretch and weight class and then Maxwell and I walked for an hour tonight. Not many of his doggie friends were out. He loves to walk at the park where there are a lot of dogs to meet. Thanks again.

To some degree, it depends on the dog. Thor needs an hour of vigorous exercise a day, or he becomes a royal, barking pain in the butt. Two hour walks mean nothing to him. I know of at least a couple other yorkies on YT like this.
