Cottony coat or silky coat!! I'm so confused Hi Yorkie lovers!! My puppy will not be ready for another month or so, and I've been reading like a mad woman on the breed because it will be my first yorkie! I am now finding out there are 2 different coats, cottony or silky. I thought they were all silky:confused:..I have not seen the puppy personally, I live in a remote area and my puppy will be flown in, I've only seen pictures. The puppies all look alike to me. How can you tell, and deos it matter to the look of a Yorkie? Thanks, this is a great forum! |
You can tell what type of coat your dog will most likely have by looking at his parents' coats. The blue and gold are usually silky and the black and tan are usually cottony. The coat texture is a personal preference, so it matter what you find attractive. :) |
Hi there, do you know what area your puppy is coming from, and how far away? You say you are in a remote area, how remote? It is not a good idea to not see a puppy in person, or its parents, before you buy. You mustn't take a pup from its mom or littermates before 12weeks. It's best for the development of their temperment/attitude. Lots of puppymills or unresponsible breeders will say a pup is younger than it actually is to make it seem smaller. Also if the breeder is going to let you have the pup before 12 weeks, that's a warning sign. Also if they advertise teacup, that's a red flag. A reputable breeder would not advertise or say teacup, and if you say it, she should inform you that there is no teacup catagory within the yorkie breed. Any yorkie can be between 4-7 lbs to be considered standard according to the AKC. Saying "teacup" or "micro" is just a way to get more money from you. Lots of times when they are too small they can get lots of health problems. Don't get the puppy just because it is the tiniest. Think of the overall long term for the life of the puppy. I heard of one pup was so small it only lived for four years. Imagine what pain that little pup went through before it finally passed? Please do your research before you buy. it is a lifelong commitment. Pups taken away from their mommys too early and shipped half way across the country is not a good start on life. There are a lot of knowledgable friendly people on YT. Please ask any questions you have. Good luck. : ) |
I love in a very remote area in Canada, there is no way for me to visit a puppy, so if I want one I have to rely on pictures. I've seen pics of the parents, mom 4lbs, dad 5lbs. I know there is no such thing as a teacup..it is a gimmicky word to make more money. The owner told me that the puppy could be shipped when the vet gave the okay..so right now I am unsure when he will arrive, his health is the upmost concern to me :) |

Also keep in mind that yorkies change colors a few times before their final coat. My Uni had a grey stripe between her eyes when she was in her "teens" phase, and now it's completely gone! |

Many pet-quality Yorkies have "wooley" coats which are completely black across the back. The hair never "breaks" into the dark steel blue that is preferred in the breed because the coat texture is not a pure silk - the favorable coat texture. |

Thanks for the replys, I guess one won't know until the pup is older, so it is just whatever way it turns out, you will love your pup regardless..I'm hoping for a silky coat..I will just have to wait and see! |
I hope your dog has a silky coat too. :goodluck: |
