| grooming nightmare I had a bad experience with a groomer ,they called and said my three yorkies would be done in an hour.I went to pick them up,they werent finished yet.An hour later they were still not done, but that was the good news. The longer I waited the worse it got.An elderly woman walked out with her westie and the front door was wide open and the place was right next to a main highway,20' feet from the front door. The dog wasn't on a leash yet and the owner and the groomer didn't notice it walking out the front door.I grabbed it outside and held on tight (saying please don't bite me) asking whose dog is this ?Nobody got exicited just oh it is hers.My Bear would have bolted into the road if that had been him. They put their hair up with full size hair elastics and I could hear them crying (screaming) from being combed out.I had told them if you find any mats cut them out ,dont pull on their fur. They looked worse than when they got there.Has anyone had their groomers use those big cage dryers?Too much for a yorkie? They wash them put them in the dryer, comb them out hours later. My babies were all upset. Finally I sayed what do I owe you ?I want my dogs now !!!I left with one completely not done.Is it out of line to visit a new groomer before taking your dogs there for the first time?Maybe take them for a nail clipping to get a good look around? They were highly recommened . |

| A good groomer will allow you to come and see how they work before you bring your dog..at least in my opinion...I am allowed to stay at the groomers hile Maximus is there and I know he gets excited if he sees me so I sit behind the window and occasionally peek in to watch from an angle. I am considering washing and combing Maximus at home and just having them give him his hair cut....because I think this is the part he especially doesn't like!!

| Oh those poor babies! That is HORRIBLE! I have to say I wouldn't have paid them one cent though! All these bad groomer stories really scare me and make me furious! I don't see why you wouldn't be able to visit the groomer before using them.

| Visit a prospective groomer and ask to see her shop. The number one piece of advice I have is to never use a groomer that dries your pup in a cage drier. At the groomer I use, I can sit and watch the entire time. Kacee is never out of my sight. She uses a blow drier, too. Please read the following: Dog dies at groomer: What you need to know Imagine taking your dog to the groomer, you come back later and it's dead. That's what one Anderson County woman says happened to her. Lola was a three year old Bichon Frise and like a child to Debby Cash and her family. "She just loved everybody and was just a happy little, playful little dog," said Debby Cash, of Claxton. Debby's husband recently dropped Lola off at the groomer. When he came back, Lola was dead. "She was in good health, so my husband was shocked, as I was shocked. What could have happened?" asked Cash. They took the dog's body to their vet who said she died of heat stroke. "She had horrible lesions on her body. Her skin and fur had come off and she had grill marks on one side of her body where she had been laying in the crate, burned into her skin. She died a very horrible, horrible death," said Cash. "People just do not understand the risk they're taking when they allow a groomer to put their dog in a cage with a cage dryer," said Vicky Crosetti, executive director of the Humane Society of the Tennessee Valley. A cage dryer is set to run for a specific time at a specific temperature. "If the animal's trapped in a cage and the dryer malfunctions mechanically, or a human fails to check the dryer, a dog can overheat very quickly and death comes fast and it's not pleasant. I just don't consider cage dryers to be safe, and I would never allow one of my own dogs to be put into a cage with a cage dryer," said Crosetti. Losing Lola is devastating for Debby and her husband. "It's losing a member of your family, and it's hard enough when they grow old and they get sick and die. But when something this senseless and this heartbreaking happens, it just makes you very angry," said Cash. Now she is just hoping what happened to her never happens to anyone else. Crosetti suggests telling the groomer you do not want a cage drier used on your dog. She also suggests asking the groomer to see the facility and watch as another dog is groomed. http://www.wbir.com/news/news.aspx?storyid=27441

| Absolutely you should be able to visit the groomer before you decide whether or not they are the people you want handling your dogs. Seeing Teddy is the only dog I own that needs to be groomed I was very naive when we started this grooming process. A few not good experiences at Petsmart later I am way pickier and have actually resorted to using a mobile pet groomer who we both love.

| Cage dryers are very bad news. I have puppy people who lost their previous yorkie in the same circumstance as the bichon. They were devastated and are in disbelief that the only recompense was for the cost of the dog. No warning signs, no liability, no fault. These things should be banned. |

Yorkie Kisses are the Best! Donating Member | OMG - I totally agree - CAGE dryers are killers and we probably don't hear all the stories about the deaths or heatstroke due to them. With 2 girls - I am STILL looking for the right groomer - I did drive around with Chanel with me one day cold calling on groomers to see how SHE reacted to them and to look at their shops. I settled on one woman who I really do like - but she didn't do the top notch job I had hoped... but I DO trust her - I'd rather have TRUST than a great haircut by a too busy groomer - Some groomers are assembly lines and many dogs are left alone or not watched carefully - When I went sneaking in while my girls were being groomed I saw they were being well cared for - To me an Interview is a good way to go - I would go check out different places BEFORE making an appointment - We are on Groomer #5 and I'm still looking ....but in the meantime - I do my girls myself |

I Love Thor Donating Member | In my experience groomers are also bad news! And these stories just back mine up. I have decided that I will not take Thor to the groomers anymore. (who knows that could change but for now I do everything he needs done!) I have never heard of the cage dryers but they sound horrible, and only lazy people would use these. One of my main frustrations with groomers is that you can schedule an opointment at 10:00am, and they will tell you to come back at 4:00 to pick up your baby. I thought that an appointment was a set time for when you would get your doggie in to be cut!! When the people at petsmart told me I could come back I was like "no I can't, I'm not leaving him here with strangers!" So I paid extra for the express cut and about 1.5-2hrs later they were finishing him up because they were still attending to some other dogs! They didn't trim his ears or nails and they didn't put his hair in a tie (as described in the 'puppy' trim', and it was just a terrible experience. I wrote to Petsmart telling them how terrible the experiece was and they wrote me back telling me they were sorry for the inconvience and to please forward my message to the manager at the store. I was like 'isn't that what customer service is FOR?' My experience obviously wasn't tragic as some of these stories have been, and my hearts go out to those families. But when you make an appointment, why can't you take your pup in then to get its grooming opposed to sending it back into the back to wait in a cage for hours surrounds by other dogs barking, crying etc?!! | I agree. I have worked at kennels and vet clinics, all of which had groomers there and I do not agree with cage drying. I would say the majority of groomers out there use it at some point or another especially for bigger, shaggier breeds like Newfies and St.Bernards who take hours just to dry. The kennel I worked for would do hand-drying first until most of the way dry and then do cage-drying at half an hour AT MOST and then start grooming the dog. If the dog wasn't dry yet, they'd do hand drying again. There was only one guy I ever saw them let stand there and watch his tiny Maltese be groomed. That was probably the best place to have your dog groomed. Ever since I moved though I can't find another groomer half as good. I'll keep looking though.
