Strange mouth odor My yorkie puppy has a strange odor coming from her mouth and I can't figure out what it is. It is a very distinct smell that almost smells metallic. The smell started all of a sudden and she has not been eating anything different. I also brush her teeth daily but the smell doesn't seem to go away. I have been told that it is most likely teething. I have not taken her to the vet because she has been acting completely normal and healthy. Does anyone know anything about this? I'm sure that I'm not the only one who has run into this. Thanks. |
Hmmmm, that's strange. I am looking some stuff up for you. Post when I find something. |
I couldn't find anything that exactly matched what you are describing. I do know that oders can be a sign of a different and more serious problems. I think you should at least give you vet a call. Sorry I couldn't be of more help. |
Tinkerbell had the most disgusting breath when her teeth were falling out. |
Are you sure it's from the mouth? My vet pointed out to me that sometimes odors are coming from the entire face area, ears could be dirty, infected or something. Mine had that puppy breath, which some people love, but it is distinctive or it could be teething. Try changing toothpaste and giving small pieces of peeled apple, which can help the breath. Otherwise, I agree, a call to the vet won't hurt either. |
For what its worth... One of my dogs had really bad breath but that was the only symptom. He ate regularly and everything else seemed normal... The vet found that he had cracked one of the big teeth in the very back and it had become infected. They pulled the tooth and all was well. He was several years old with adult teeth, though. |
Metallic? A metallic smell is indicative of blood. Maybe your baby has lost a tooth recently? My Benni had bad breath and a member recommended 8 in 1 breath tabs, finally found them at a petstore at the Block in Orange and they work great. However, when my Benni had internal bleeding due to an overdose of ibuprofen, his breath smelled metallic. If it continues, I would have him checked by the vet. |
Thank you for all of your quick responses! This site is great! I actually did call the vet last week and they told me that it was most likely teething and not to worry. I told them that I would bring her in if it continued. I have looked in her mouth and she is getting more teeth... I'm just hoping that the baby ones fall out so that she doesn't have a problem with crowding and overlapping. I have heard that the metallic smell is a sign of blood. I have a feeling that is what it is but will have it checked when she goes into the vet. Thanks again! |
Macy just had a bath and teeth brushing this morning but her mouth is stinky again- and it is because she is losing her teeth. The smell went away for a little bit but came back it is like the baby teeth roots are "decaying" and that is the smell. |
