Hawk/Yorkie story on website this is my first time to try to do this so I hope I did it right! Although Giggle usually has some quirky news to share with me, this story is certainly no laughing matter. Turns out pet owners in the town of Windsor, Canada have to not only worry about other pooches at the park, but also aptly-named birds of prey. According to a recent article, dogs frolicking at Willistead Park have seen some hungry hawks stalking the skies overhead . . . and occasionally swooping down for an apparent "snack." One such owner, Mark Koppeser, says his five-pound Yorkie was nearly a meal for one persistent bird: We heard a noise like a caw or a squeal. When we looked up, there was a huge bird soaring and it spread its wings less than a foot above Ginger . . . I yelled like you'd yell if your kid was going to get hit by a car. Now one local bird expert is still skeptical about the story saying that it's the wrong time of year and even a small dog would be big prey for a red-tailed hawk, I wouldn't take any chances there, would you? I'm a little skeptical about this story too. I've heard a few versions of it so it kinda seems like an urban legend. A few years ago I heard about a Chihuahua getting snatched at a rest stop (can't understand why the leash wouldn't have saved it) and there is a story on my Shih Tzu forum about someone's puppy being taken from their yard. I agree that even a small dog would be pretty big prey for most birds, but a puppy isn't so far fetched. You can never be to vigilant. |
This story is true..it's on the front page of the Windsor Star....I live in Windsor..just a few miles from Wilistead Manor....this is so scary.....you would think this would not happen in the city! |
Hawks can carry, I think, up to around 10 lbs or a little less. The thing is that once they get their claws into a pup, even if they drop it, it's usually too late, because the talons dig in and cut so badly. |
yes it would be too late...i don't even know what i would have done in such case but i don't think the hawk will be flying away alive either... |
I worry about Hawks too. Theres a lot here in Florida, and if I see them with my babies out I scoop them up and bring them in. |
I remember reading on YT about a member's yorkie being snatched or almost snatched by a hawk. And, just two days ago in the neighbors driveway, I watched a hawk swoop down and almost get a big squirrel. A tree in his way, prevented the hawk from making his catch and the squirrel dropped out of his talons. Now a big squirrel is not much smaller than some of the 3lb yorkies I'm aware of here.....also, this wasn't a big hawk, it was a smaller variety than a redtail. |

We not only have hawks, but eagles, too: Goldens and Bald. My dogs are not allowed outside by themselves. It's hard, because the yard is fenced ... and they love to romp. My hubby sits out front a lot (he's disabled) watching the comings and goings of the local squirrel population. The hawks swoop down and carry them off with alarming frequency. Our Bella is only 3.5 lbs. - not much bigger than the squirrels. Puddy is a whopping 6 lbs. :rolleyes: . Nope, they don't go out unattended. |
I worry about birds of prey during the day and owls at night. We had a Boston that nearly got caught by a large hawk. Thankfully 2 of my sons ran toward that swooping bird waiving their arms and screaming. |
It is very scary, since we moved in june to our new place, our pasture is shaped like a upside down L around our house & there is alot of trees but on the edge of them is three very dead looking trees (like something in a haunted witch movie :) ) & that's ironically where they are, three huge hawks in each tree top we can actually be eating lunch at the table which has french doors directly behind it & see the shadows as they swoop around. I haven't let regan out beyond the porch & I got her a small little kiddie pool (she loves to play w/peanut my hubbies new outside rat terrier baby) in it splashing around BUT only on the porch. When I was reading that story I was praying for a happy ending, so glad it was. |
