New toys are grossing me out!
 
I've been all over the place looking at new puppy supplies. I've bought so many adorable little clothes, and bows, and blankets, etc. But I am having the hardest time with toys.

There are soooo many cute ones out there. But everytime I pick one up, I start imaginging my little Pippa playing with it...and then I start imagining the little parts like eyeballs and ears and little rope legs getting chewed up and swallowed (choking hazard!)...and that's bad enough...but then I imagine my little Pippa putting that toy in her mouth and all of the hands and who knows what else having touched it between factory and warehouse and then in the store and...you know...:eek:

...AND I AM SO GROSSED OUT! I can't bear to purchase anything.

Does anyone else have this problem? How did you get over it? Is there a way to disinfect them safely? GEEZ! Why is this bothering me to such an extent? :tongue001

I am always concerned about the safety of my yorkie kids. I try to select toys that have no glued on or sewed on small parts that can present a choking hazard. Washability is also very important as I wash their new toys before they get to play with them and I also clean all toys regularly.

LOL I am the same way:laugh: Get a few lingerie bags (the mesh bags for the washing machine) and put the toys in there. Wash as normal with a very small amount of unscented detergent, then do a double rinse with a cup or two of vinegar in the final rinse. Hang them to dry, don't put them in the dryer, as they'll last longer if you don't;) I wash my girls' toys about once a month or so,and their bedding gets done every week when I do mine. The hard toys get run through the dishwasher on the top rack, then rinsed and air dried. I'm paranoid about germs too.

or.....

What do dogs do when they first MEET another dog ??
Answer: (can we say butt sniff) ? :D:D:D

so.....Looking at the bigger picture - why be grossed out over a few toys ??? :p

I wash all of Chewys toys every few weeks... all but one have done fine in the washer and dryer.
Try to find things with no plastic parts... Chewys favorite is BoBo... (loofa dogs) Loofa Dog - 6" Dog Toy - DogToys.com

I wouldnt be too worried about all the hands that have touched the toys between the factory and the store... dogs lick the floor, each others butts, basically they lick everything and anything...If you want to be on the safe side.. you can always just wash it before giving it to her.

OH! Duh! I never thought of putting them through the wash or the dishwasher...I don't know why??? I guess I was thinking of the toys like they were a sofa cushion or a...I don't know...something that you don't push through the washer...LOL...

It was freaking me out a little...feeling so strongly about it...I mean, I am not compulsive about cleaning or anything...I keep my house clean like the average person...but a little dirt never hurt anyone...I love camping, etc...you know, things like that. But geez! I actually thought I was going to dry heave when I was standing there in Petco yesterday thinking about my little girl putting her mouth on those toys...LOL!

you're great to worry - I found some yorkies to be soooo good with their toys - like my oldest Chanel is...She still has intact toys from when she was a baby -

then ...there's the Toy TERMINATORS like my little Cheri... who thinks no toy is a good toy till it's totally destroyed and stuffing is all over the place

ps....here's a link to making a handmade toy -

6 years ago when I first got my Chanel - I tied some of my husbands dress socks on the ends into knots to make soft toys for teething and she loved her sock toys - both my girls did - actually they still play with them and now they're 6 & 4 years old -
