Hello. I am new to YorkieTalk. I have never posted on a forum before so I hope I am doing this correctly. My name is Tiffany and I just bought my first Yorkie on Saturday. She is 10 weeks old and her name is Layla. My husband is in the Army and will be deploying soon so we decided it was time to add a puppy to our family. I do have a question... Layla has dandruff on her bottom. Is this normal? Do I need to get this checked out, or will it just go away?. I haven't seen her itch except around her ears so I am not sure the cause of the dandruff.

I'm not familiar with the dandruff problem, but it doesn't sound serious to me. Hopefully, someone with more experience will be able to help.

In the meantime, I'm glad you found us and hope you find lots of good information. Can't wait to see pics of Layla, too!

Welcome to YT! :) There is a section here called 'my yorkie videos'. In that section (at the top) is a sticky with information about videos. I would love to see one of little Layla.

I have no advice about the dandruff except to make sure that she has had a vet check since she's been home. If not, you really need to do that anyway, and you can ask about the dandruff.

Haven't ever heard about dandruff on their bottom, it could be something else. Regardless, all new puppies should be taken to the vet for a checkup. Most breeders won't release a yorkie, before the age of 12 weeks, and this tells me something about the breeder. Did you get a shot record from the breeder? Is she scratching her ears a lot?

I did not actually meet the breeder. I only met Ms Smith, the translator. When my daughter and I saw the puppy we fell in love, and I did not think to ask the questions I should have. She said the puppy had been dewormed the day we bought her which was the 19th. I do know that they had taken her to the vet that day and they did not want to give her her first shots for another week since she had just been dewormed. She had a few flakes at that time, but Ms Smith said the vet said that was normal. She showed me the paperwork, but it was all in German so I couldn't make it all out. I made an appt with the vet here on base, but they cannot see Layla until next week. We are using the same dog food they had been feeding her called Christopherus, and she said we needed to start adding a pedigree dry dog food slowly to that. She also said we needed to get her Yogurt treats until she is 1 yr old. I am going to call her back, because I just realized when we brought her home that she did not come with any papers just dog food and a dewormer we were told to give to her in a week. Is that normal for them not to come with papers unless you ask? I feel really stupid now for not asking questions up front. I was just so excited to finally get a puppy. We had been looking for a puppy to love since October and got scammed from someone in Cameroon Africa in the process. I appreciate everyone's input and I just want to give my Layla the best life possible with lots of love.

Layla is scratching at her right ear several times a day. Does that mean something?

I didn't realize you were in Germany. I just don't know about deworming and all that, this was done before I got Joey, but I was originally wondering if was indeed dandruff or something else since it was in the bottom area. As long as you are going to the vet soon, I'm sure it will be all right. As far as scratching her ear, if it's just several times a day, it's probably not a problem. I have heard of ear mites, is there any odor coming from the ear?

Did they claim she was registered? It seems like they should have given you some papers whether or not you asked.

We are from Texas but we are currently stationed in Germany. I appreciate it. I hope everything will be okay. Maybe she isn't registered. I am not sure. How do they register puppies? What are the guidelines?

Are you sure it's dandruff. Is it moving? The reason I mention that is
because Lice has been found on anouther pup here. Check it out good.
I would not worm a pup of that size by myself. Talk to the vet regarding
this before you do anything else. IMO

Thank you! It is not moving, thank goodness. It is dandruff flakes, like dry skin. She is getting into the vet next week, so hopefully I will be able to report good news. I gave her a bath when I brought her home with an Oatmeal / Aloe puppy shampoo. It hasn't gotten worse, I just really noticed it when I was combing her hair today. It doesn't seem to bother her one bit. I didn't want to bath her again so soon. Other than that I guess we will just have to wait and see. She is full of life and she is bringing joy to our lives.

I don't know the name of the registry they use in Europe, I'm sure some of our other members do. In the U.S. we use the American Kennel Club (AKC). You can only register your puppies if you are entitled to, meaning the parents are registered, and the breeder had breeding rights. An AKC dog will always cost more than an unregistered dog. I imagine it's similar in Europe. Many members here have unregistered dogs; I only support the AKC because I believe it helps produce healthier dogs in the long run.

She's a little cutie, but I would expect you would need some type of paperwork to get her out of the country. Did they give you a bill of sale?

I do not have a bill of sale. Her parents must not have been registered. Again I am feeling a little foolish, but I love her none the less. She has to be current on her shots, get a microchip, and passport to leave the country and return, which is being done also next week. It sounds funny that a puppy needs a passport. The good thing about being in Europe is that dogs/puppies are allowed everywhere humans are allowed. We get to take her everywhere with us with no problems or questions asked. Even to the restaurants if we want. I am coming home to Texas for a month in the summer and Layla is coming with me. I actually get to bring her as a carry on on the plane. I hope she does well, but I just can't imagine leaving her with friends for a month! Has anyone else had a pet travel internationally? Has anyone bought a puppy carrier that is airline approved as a carry on that they just love because I am shopping for one now.

Oh that's so neat. . . . a passport. . . . I want one for Joey!! I've heard that Europe is so much more pet friendly, I don't know if its that Americans are germaphobic or too litigious (sue happy), but I really wish that were true here.

I am excited. I am so glad she can come everywhere with us because we are really enjoying the traveling while we are here in Europe.
