Deter and Poop Eating Question Ugh!! My darling baby (2.5 months old) is eating his own poop (we have no other pets)!! I tried Accent - didn't really help - although he seems more to just nibble play with "it" than actually eat it. I can't tell you how much this grosses us all out. No one wants anything to do with him after this<shudder>!!! My question is the Deter says one tablet a day for every 10 lbs. Tucker is between 2-3 lbs. Should I just give him half a tablet or is it safe enough to give the whole thing? I guess after treatment, I need to let him taste his poop to know that it tastes bad, huh?<big shudder>!! We use a pen with a pee pad/litter box at one end and his bed and toys at the other end. Most of the time I am around to quickly remove poop, but every once in a while he does it when I'm not around to remove it in time. He bring the poop out of his box and bring it to his bed to play with/nibble. I guess crate training is an option, but other than this issue, the play pen is working so well!! I really need this discusting habit to stop.:( Julie and Tucker |
It's very common - and you should be able to stop this habit while he's still young. This topic has been discussed at great length on here - I did a search, here's a link to other posts - including solutions that have WORKED for others on here. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sea...earchid=940807 Good luck! |
Thanks, yes I've read and read. Seems like it is not a very easy problem to resolve. My main question was on the dose of deter based on weight. I went ahead and gave him a full pill since the box said if the regular dose didn't help, double it. He loved the pill. Funny thing was, I was just out at the stable where we board our horse and I was giving her some play time in the arena since the weather is nasty today and she won't be turned out and she decides to eat some other horses left behind manure. Aaacckkk!! I have never seen her do this before!! Both the horse and the puppy are fed high quality feeds!! I think they are just doing it to see the look of sheer horror on my face, LOL!!! |
My little boy did this also. I used the Deter and it worked great. Now he doesn't eat his any more. But I did catch him out in the yard eating deer nuggets that were left behind. Good luck, it is a gross habit. |
Hey Wogger, did you have any luck with with Deter? Is your baby still eating poop? I just bought it and would like to know if you had any luck using it. Thanks |

It's the grossest thing ever! Me and my boyfriend call Banks a sh*teater...yuck! Oddly enough, he doesn't seem very interested in his own poop (though we're training him to go outside and he doesn't get much time to 'examine' it) but he IS very interesting in eating the poop of other dogs...even more disgusting!! Someone told me that it's because there are nutirients in dog poo and the dogs can tell?! I think it might be a load of crap, but thought I'd pass along the info anyway. |
Well, Jerome eats both other dogs and his own. I have to keep a close eye at him when taking him for walks. |
Brandi is 9 1/2 months old and still eats her poop......after using an entire box of 90 deter......good luck.....it just makes me GAG |

i've done many, many searches on here try "Poo eating" and you'll see the many, many recommendations from pineapples to meat tenderizer... so far nothing works for my tinkerbell and I gave up, i'll have to try the deter, I guess. It is SO, SO gross, and Mine does the same thing, we find little suprises in her bedding -and all this time, i thought they didnt want that stuff in their beds- yuck. mine is a mess and the same thing with my daughter, no one wants to hold her or help me with her, after she's had a snack on it. i think some dogs are just weird. My vet said she might grow out of it, but a lot of dogs just do this :( as they say, welcome to the club of poo eating yorkies :( |
I am in the club too! Mine are now 2 years old    ...and yes they still eat their poop. I have tried everything! ACCENT FORBID DETER Pineapples Spinach Zucchini Hot sauce on and in the poop Horseradish on and in the poop Shaking coins in the can It has been a loosing battle all this while. The only good thing is, now that they are older, they seem to poop only 2x (each). So, now I try to get them both to poop in the morning before I leave. Sometimes they both will and yay for me - I get to flush 2 poops. BUT, most of the time only 1 or NONE will poop before I leave, so you know they are snacking on that while I am at work. The evening poops I usually do get! When I am able to 'get' the poop. I make such a big deal, how good they are for pooping and leaving it alone. They come with me to flush it and then off to the kitchen for a special treat. One last resort I am trying is the Anise Seed. I had read here on YT that someone feed their dog 1 seed a day and after about two weeks the dog stopped. I have crazy thoughts about that seed getting stuck in their digestive tract and causing an infection. So I took a whole bunch of seeds and put them in a bagging and hammered the hell out of it, so it is like dust that I sprinkle on the AM and PM food. So far it has only been a couple of days, but I will continue on with it and see what happens. GOOD LUCK TO US ALL  |
Keep us posted about the anisse seeds. I wouldn't mind trying them either.:) |
My Mattie, 11 weeks old, is also a poop eater  While at the Vets 2 weeks ago I asked them about this. He said that this is a Terrior trade and that hopefully they out grow it. The best advise he gave me was to scold him when he was caught in the act. So we have been leaving his poop on the wee wee pads for just a few minutes afterward to see what he does. If he goes for it we yell at him and tell him NO NO..... and that has been helping. Good luck. |
My Chino eats my cats poo or aka "cat biscuits" but not his own |
our first yorkie would eat her poop, we have had 2 more since then that didnt, we tried for a year to get her to quit but finally just gave and had to sell her(we had just had our son born at that time) nasty and horrible breath- good luck |
Reece is 7 months old and LOVES poop...HIS SISTERS POOP is most delicious..or so it seems LMAO...in the morning when they go outside to do their 'business' he waits behind his sister for his breakfast...ok im being gross...but thats what it seems like lol... If he can get away with it..he sneaks poop in from the yard..hides it in his doggy tent for a midnight snack...what a goof!! lol Dawn |
I've been using Deter also without any good results. At an upscale pet store where I go once in a great while (yesterday as a matter of fact!:D ), they had a powder from a company that specializes in all natural stuff. I didn't think of trying it, but when I go back to get the bed (yes, another bed) I ordered, I may look into it. it is such a disgusting habit. some say it's cause they're missing something in their diet, but I don't know. mine get the best foods and missing link, etc... i don't know could possibly be missing. omega |

I have been using forbid for 4 weeks. When I first got it I would spinkle it on her food, but she doesn't eat much of her food so it would take her a couple days to eat the recomended amout for one dose...so I started putting the recommended dose of 1/4 envelope in a spoonful of cottage cheese twice a day and it is helping....she doesn't eat it as much anymore but she will carry it off. She hates her poop....she will bark and growl and jump at it after she get finished. If I am home she will go to the back door and use her potty pad and I always know when she has pooped because she will be barking and growling but she will ususally leave it alone if I am here...but if I am gone and lock her in the hall she will have poop spread from one end to the other and in her bed...yuck...then she has to have a bath because she has poop balls in her hair... . I have noticed in the past few days that she has been leaving it alone more. Maybe she will grow out of it but my vet said that dogs that eat poop just like to eat poop, she said that she has had a dog (some type of spaniel I think) for 12 years that has eaten poop for 12 years and there is nothing that they can do about it. |
I have used DETER lots in the rescue and had alot of success with it when used as directed. i think I had 2 dogs who didn't respond so well with it , so I also started feeding them lots of homecooked and it seemed to work. i think by fulfilling that little nitch by giving the homecooked I balanced out a need they had:idontknow |
I don't know anything about deter. I never used it. I tried many other things that didn't work also. I gave up. Venus is 8 months now, and has quit eating it. I will catch her playing with it once in a while though, still. Don't you love it when they come up and plant a huge kiss on your mouth after they do this:eek: Welcome to the club of poop eaters! |
I'm the original poster. I think the Deter has made a bit of a difference. He is not devouring the poop, but is still messing with it occasionally. I think since he sees me clean it up from the pee pad, he thinks it is his job if I am not in the room. I have watched him for a few minutes when he has pooped in my presence and he will look at the poop and then look at me and wait. I don't know what goes on when I am not in the room at the time - I'd like to set up a camera and observe at what point he thinks it's his job to take over. I really think it is more him trying to "help" than liking the poop. It seems like he gives me X amount of time to deal with it, and usually I'm there to do so, but every once in a while I'm in another part of the house... I just might set up the camera one day soon and see what happens when he poops and I'm not in the room. I will keep giving the Deter, because I want to do everything in my power to make poop unappealing (as if!!). We can go days without an incident and then have a day where he gets into it a couple times. I really want this to end. Years ago I had a Bichon that devoured his poop the second it occurred and nothing made him quit (he would also often throw up afterward (double yuck!)). I ended up rehoming him as we just could not live with it. Tucker is nowhere near as bad, thankfully and I am really hoping we can train him out of it!!! I do reward him like crazy when he poops and leaves it alone! Julie and Tucker :aimeeyork |

I just post about poop eater on General discussion this morning!!! I found the evidence that she had midnight snack last night.... I use Deter as well and I break into small pieces and give to her. Luckly she loves the Deter. I'll keep using the Deter but I just hope she will grow out of it soon!!!! I hate kissing her when I know where her mouth were..... |
Well, I started using Deter the day before yesterday and so far no luck:( |
My dogs all get some human food and they get cooked chicken, or steak meat and as long as I\'ve had yorkies they have never eaten their stool. Maybe try some real meat in their diet when they find the chickenor steak tastes better than poop they usually stop. WE used to raise birddogs and some did that, we thought it was from kennel boredom. But we started feeding them the scraps from the kitchen and they stopped. I guess they found out scraps tasted lots better than poop.:D Wonder if there is anything to that? Wonder how many on here that feed their dogs table food have probs with poop eating? Wonder if we could make poll? |
I think mine started to do it from being bored and contained in a small room and hey, it\'s there, so why not  They are older and out of the \'puupy\' stage and can be trusted in the whole house. So, mine have continued because of behavioral issues. They do stop for a couple of days, but then fall right back. They have jealous issues between each other, so sometimes, I think they eat it just because they don\'t want to other one to get. Mine eat both dry food and very healthy human food, so that\'s not the problem over here, it\'s really become a behavioral issue now  |
