New at potty training I'm in "study mode"... I'll get my new yorkie babe in about 3 or 4 weeks. I plan on crate trng but haven't decided on pads or outside. I'd prefer both. How do you do both outside and pads? same time or one at a time? Plus, all the books say feed outside the crate. My breeder recommends leaving food in crate to prevent hypocycemia. I'll be with him for a couple of days before I have to go to work...but will come home three times during the day (about every 3 hrs) for a while. Also, how do you crate train at night? still out every 3 or 4 hours? and how long? I thought about making a night crate and a day crate. Any experience with this? (I did that with my children so they knew to sleep longer in the night bed). I'm full of questions. Need help from you experts!!!:confused: |
well i just used the pads for myself and keep her inside only since she cant g o outside until she gets vaccinated with all her shots. its easy for us when she was trained, she is almost 3 months and she is 85% trained , if you want information on how its easy as i said send me an email on here |
when i get mine i plan on pad training inside a dog litter box that i got. i ended up buying a really big crate and making like a house out of it, putting bed and toys at one end and litter box at the other. i hope it works out that way..... i guess it just depends on how you want them to go outside vs. inside.. i want mine to go inside. |
Potty? My boys go inside and out. I have a designated 3rd bedroom for the "potty room". I've never had any problem with them doing both. Just prepare yourself for some confusion if you have lots of rugs in your house. I've had to switch to dark,washable kitchen rugs because they sometimes have accidents. They know to "go outside, go potty", but they also use the potty pads because I work 9-10 hour days. I have wood floors so I don't know how it works if you have carpet. I make "hiking posts" for them, so they can hike their leg. They pee and poo both on the pads. You may want to try an exercise pen instead of crate. I don't crate mine, so I'm no help there. |
My dog IKO was using the litter box but over the past 2 weeks regressed and now just goes on the floor. I used pee pads whoever the chewed them to shreds. |
Will your puppy be 12 weeks when you get him? All my puppies had accidents in the crate until they matured a bit, so don't be surprised if it happens. When not in the crate, both my boys were trained to go on wee wee pads first, then eventually outside. Now if the weather is bad, as soon as I put down the pads, they know what to do. If you decide to train on wee wee pads first, bring a pad outside and let him use it outdoors for awhile until he gets used to going outside. I have found that until 6 months of age, my pups were not able to potty train very well. But once they reached 6 months, they gradually came around. As far as overnight in the crate, I kept the crate next to our bed. We would get up every few hours and put him on a pad. It takes awhile but eventually they will sleep all night. (just like a human baby!) Good Luck and don't hesitate to ask if you need help! :) |
I set Gracie up with an X-pen. There is a crate in there that contains her comfort pup bed. She loves to go in there and crash. Her food, water, toys and potty pads are all out in the pen in their own areas. Gracie is now 3 months old and has run of the living room and dining room when I am here to watch her. Her x-pen is in the living room. For the last week or so, she has been 100% with using the potty pads in the x-pen. Good girl! When we are outside, she will pee and I will praise her like crazy. So far, she prefers to save the poo for home. Such a lady? She does not yet go potty on command, but I think she is doing well containing things to her x-pen at her age. She will occasionally miss her potty pad because she gets too close to the edge. |
I've changed our potty routine about 4 times here...bad I know...but my puppy (7mos) is adjusting. We are now using a litter box with pup head grasss (switching to a different kind of synthetic grass because the pup head smells so bad with the attractant they put on it) in the bathroom. I keep the door closed. When we are home, he rings a bell to ask so we either bring him outside or into the bathroom (if it is dark or raining). When we are gone, he has free access to it. I did this because we travel a lot and I want him to get used to "asking" to "go" when we visit different peoples houses. Since switching to a litter box (off of pee pads or the plain pup head grass which sits 1 inch off the floor) he seems to have less accidents. He used to go into a house and if he saw a kitchen or bathmat or something like that, would pee...but now that he is older and into the litter box...I think (but not sure) he knows the difference. The litter box is harder to travel with than a pee pad (easier than trying to travel with the pup head) but a definate "this is where you go" type device. I also tried the Wiz dog. suz |
doggie litter box material Hi guys & gals, this is actually my first posting. I have learned so much from all of you. My baby is five months, I've had her since she was 10 weeks and have been using your posting as a reference source. Her name is Coco-Ming and she is still not 100% housebroken, but progressing well. I am interested in using a litter box for those rainy & snowy days. Can you tell me more about the Pup Head Grass, and where i could purchase it. The other products i have tried, such as the pellets and wheat type grains, Coco-Ming tries to eat them and has vomited as a result. This site was exactly what i needed as a first time yorkie mom! |
I got my baby Mia last friday and set up a play pen for her. On one side she has her food, water, toys and blanket on the other has her pee pad..I'm hoping to move the pee pad into a small litter box and gradually switch to litter. She hasn't had any accidents in the house so far, but I watch her closely and put in the playpen every half hour for a potty break. Yep...she sleep with me!!:p |

Trust me...I feel all yoru pain...and I'm still living it...ha ha. My dog will still have an accident on the bathroom carpet or towel. No where else...only in the bathroom. I think it goes back to the fact that he came to me trained on washable pee pads...maybe? Not sure. I have not stayed consistant with the litter box for that long...we just started it and he is only a puppy. I can't wait to get the new grass I ordered. I'm really hating the smell of the pup head one. Ugh. My dog is getting better about pee ing outside...but the pooh...he takes FOREVER. Sometimes it is just easier to let him go in his litter box in the morning because he will go faster whereas outside...I could be waiting an hour and I have to get on with my day...and I serously mean waiting an hour even if I run him out mid pooh...he will stop once outside because there is too much to see. suz |
The wait... Sounds like his "reward" is outside...and he's learned how to make it last. As I've said, I'm in study mode and do not have experience...but wonder if this would work. Contain his outside potty to a small area with a child's play pen or an e-pen. Someone else (Amanda7, I believe) advised me on outside potty...they have a child's play pen lined with rocks in the middle and bricks around the side. They put pup in it and he stays until his job is done. then he gets to run around. Or maybe, make him stay on a leash until his job is done, then treat, praise and unleash for play time. Just suggestions....I'll be asking what to do in about 6 weeks when nothing is working!!!!!:D Let us know what you try and how it works. JaTa (Jasper Tate's Mom-to-be) |

The person I got Venus from gave me something thats called Nutri-Cal. Those first few days, I gave it to her a good bit, especially when she wasn't eating well, with the first separation from her Mom and sisters. Now I'm not doing the pee pee pads, just outside training. I kept her food and water in the crate, then wondered why she kept messing it up! Duh. Since I found this board a few days ago, found a lot of things I was doing wrong and trying to correct them now!! I now keep her food and water out of the crate. When we come in, she eats drinks then back to the crate. I also have some of my older Yorkies treats cut up, and in a baggie, and keep them in my pocket. When we're outside, and she potties, I praise, and give her a treat. Today is day 2 on this method, and the only time she messes her crate up is sometime in the late night to early morning! I spent a lot of time here studying, and have learned a lot. |
Potty Marks on Carpeting Cleaning Aid Bear is 7 months now and does very well at going outside - as long as we watch for his signals. I found two produces for cleaning up stains on carpets that work very, very well. One is Zero Odor, which does great at removing the smell and new stains. Their website is ZeroOdorStore.com. The other product I buy from QVC com. It is Joe Campanelli Professional Formula Stain Remover. It takes out old stains. Just spray it on and stain's gone! Both of these products are very reasonable price-wise. I paid Over $100. for a cleaning system on line that can't even come close to these two products. If anyone wishes move information, email me. |
I have two boys. They STOPPED marking when I made them some pee poles. I filled empty 2 litre coke bottles with water. I lay a piddle pad on the floor and set the bottle in the middle of it and drape it with another piddle pad! Now they hike there!!!!!!!!! |
jjl720 I have been reading the housebreaking issues and find I'm having an impossible time with my new Yorkie. He is 5 months and weighs in at 2lb. 6oz. The breeder told me he was litter trained , otherwise I would not have bought such an old puppy. He was also much smaller than I had hoped for. He has been home for 6 days and the first two days he used his litter. Since then, he will go in the box and do nothing and is urinating and deficating all over my kitchen. I am spending every minute of my day with him, and he will hold his urine for hours(up to 12!)I have housebroken numerous dogs and have never had this problem. I am exhausted from watching which is why I probably don't see him. Today I turned around for a minute to wash my hands and he went. He is not on any schedule and will mess in his crate at night. I take him to the pan after sleep, meals and play, but no luck I am at my wits end. He is also still barking at night and it is affecting my children- they are exhausted in school. Vet said to buy a large crate and put his pan, bed inside at night and I will try this tonite. Any suggestions? |
Housetraining... Geez, I am depressed. I just adopted my cute little Oliver two days ago and I am getting rather bummed cause he was doing so good on the pee pads but today has been going anywhere but them. We have carpet everywhere in my apt except for the kitchen and bathroom. I have caught him in the act many times and scold him saying "NO" but he doesn't seem to phased by it. When I put a gate up to keep him only in the kitchen, he whines and whines. I don't know when to let him into the carpeted area anymore. I don't get it...he was good as gold his first day here and know it's like he is clueless.....:((( HELP! |

Ref: Housetraining Hang in there and don't let it get you down. I've been there! Bear is 7 months old and we still have moments when he just drops his butt and goes! Since Bear goes outside I have learned to be aware of his signals when he has to go. Oliver will get the hang of it. |
Same thing with my Max. He was not pan trained like the breeder said. Yesterday I decided I was too stressed so I decided to treat him like an 8 week old. Since the weather here is going to be warm for the next week or so, I threw out the pan and decided to housebreak him to the outside like I've done all the other dogs. The vet said it was ok in spite of his small size. I've been taking him outside all day and rewarding him for doing his business. He hasn't messed in the house all day. It will take longer since he's had 5 months to learn bad habits and he made a lot of messes in the kitchen in the week I've had him. But I feel more in control and comfortable with this decision which will probably make him less stressed. I will still crate him with the litter pan at night, though. Hope it doesn't confuse him, but at least I have a plan! |
