| Potty Training with Xpen Hello! I would just like some feedback about potty training and others experiences. We've had our dog for 4 weeks now. He is 12 weeks old. I purchased this pen off Amazon. https://www.amazon.ca/IRIS-Exercise-...s=iris+playpen It is 8 square feet. It has just enough room for his bed, food/water, puppy pad tray and a few toys. Our pup is good with morning pees. If I bring him to the pad first thing in the morning, he will pee. But, most times he will go on the floor if I dont bring him directly to the pad. He never poos on the pad either.. Once I come home from work and bring him out of the pen he will go on the pad. Other than that he is usually at home with my husband, unsupervised Im sure, having free reign peeing on all the door mats and in the halls. I work 8am to 4pm, 4 days a week. And my husband works shifts. I really would like the dog to be on my schedule. But I feel bad leaving him in his pen all day. I dont plan to use the pen forever. Only until we are comfortable leaving him in the house accident free. We are a busy family with 2 kids. I dont always have the time to 100% supervise him. Between dinner baths bed and hmwk it gets tricky. Does your pup stay crated during the day? How often do you take him out to play and for how long/often? During the training period should i be keeping him in the pen more often than not? Thank you! |

I'm using the same X-pen as you, but mine is only about 72X36 (so, roughly 6' by 3'). My little girl Dutch, right at six months old, does not have free run of the house. Dutch has spent most of her time either in the X-pen or on our bed (where there is a potty pad). She also spends time with us on sofas, benches, etc. She has a potty pad inside the pen, but we have also set up a pad outside the pen--just so that we have a pad where we "place her" when it's time to go and she's not in the pen. At 8 square feet, your X-pen is much larger than mine. My rule of thumb is pretty simple--less than 100% supervision is not supervision. Lil' Dutch is only loose in the house during play time--and then she's usually "zooming" around, which is pretty fun for all of us. | |

| Looks like I need to be using the pen more often than I am now. I think the size of his pen is good. He doesnt have accidents. He either holds it or uses the pad in his pen. I will only take him out for some good quailty supervised time for now until we have established some good house training. Thank you for your reply |

| Fabian is 21 months old. He stays in his pen all day long while we work. We have this one: https://www.amazon.com/Richell-Conve...hell+dog+crate It's a fortress because he's a climber. ***Worth every penny for the peace of mind.*** We have it in a rectangular configuration. I come home at lunchtime everyday to walk him,let him pee, and give him some time out of his pen. |

| This is so true. We managed to potty train our Mike only with 100% supervision (I'm at home with him most of the time) and lots and lots of praise and treats for peeing and potty on the pad. He is 16 weeks today. In the beginning we had a large pad in every corner of the room&hallway where he is free to be during the day. Also 1 pad in the pen for the night. So anytime he wanted to go there was a pad in close proximity. Then I removed the pads one by one and put a throw pillow or his blanket on that spot for a few days so he didn't want to potty there. Home looked terrible for a month with all these pads around. Now we are down to 1/2 pad in the hallway and 1/2 pad in his pen. Before he was trained I also washed the floors frequently with water+white vinegar to clean the urine smell. I believe more pads and more time in the pen will be good for training your pup. Hope this helps. |

| I will say that I trained with an expen with my first yorkie and it was an unsuccessful mess. Reason being pads can be like carpet to a dog so if you have rugs or carpet the dog can be inclined to use it indoors. I suggest crate training. Dogs don’t like going in their space they rest in . Smaller confines and a consistent outdoor potty time with positive praise will lead you to less headaches and potty training woes.
